Beyond the Black Rainbow is a sci-fi throwback film that gained notice on some of last year’s festival circuits, including The Tribeca Film Festival. The film is the visually-captivating work of writer/director Panos Cosmatos, and incorporates the look and aesthetic of late ’60s/early ’70s sci-fi cinema like 2001: A Space Odyssey with the psychodrama mystery of The Prisoner TV series.
If you’re a fan of classic sci-fi that mixed some tension and mystery with creative abstract imagery, then you’ll definitely want to check out the trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow.
Before we tell you anything about the film, simply have a look at the trailer:
Now Check out the synopsis for the film, which helps to explain all the strange imagery you just witnessed:
Deep within the mysterious Arboria Institute, a disturbed and beautiful girl (Eva Allan) is held captive by a doctor in search of inner peace. Her mind is controlled by a sinister technology. Silently, she waits for her next session with deranged therapist Dr. Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers). If she hopes to escape, she must journey through the darkest reaches of The Institute… but Nyle wonʼt easily part with his most gifted and dangerous creation.
The film was shot in and around Vancouver and debuted in Canadian festivals as far back as 2010. Magnet Releasing (a division of Magnolia Pictures) has snagged it up and will be releasing it domestically in the U.S. in the near future.
Be sure to head over to Apple to see the trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow in HD. We’ll keep you posted as to when Magnet will be officially releasing the film in the states.

This almost looks creepy and atmospheric enough to be good. It almost looks like a psychological horror film in parts, but I bet that is misleading, based on the synopsis. Kind of like Drive was sold as an action film by the people who put the trailer together. I’m excited to see this. Might rock some worlds.
Nevermind, supposedly it does have heavy horror elements according to a review I just read on IMDB.
that actually looks pretty damn interesting
Looks very retro
Love that retro style!
weird…
Been a long time since I’ve seen a movie I was completely and totally uninterested in…(gasp!) Oh would ya look at that!
As someone who used to do many hallucinogenic drugs I think I’ll skip this one as even viewing the trailer gave me some very strange feelings. Not sure I should go back down those paths.
this film looks amazing!!! They look and feel of it alone already creeps me out
“Beyond Sanity” jesus…. i doubt i’m going to have the patience for this unfortunately. Probably not worth getting worked up over since it’s probably NOT coming out in wide release(Hence Magnet). I also find it really disturbing that the main guy looks like Gram from that show Angry Boys. I just saw 2001 today and am currently racking my brain over it so i think i’ll just stick with that.
This looks good, Ill check it out. Magnet has been releasing some pretty good films here lately.
huh ?!?! WTF?.. this looks like Alma’s story from FEAR !!!!
Hi!
I actually saw this movie at the Tribecca film festival last year–it was awful, terribly paced, indulgent, and incredibly boring. I saw the film with two friends, both of whom prize 2001 as one of the greatest films ever (I’m not a huge fan of that), and they disliked “Beyond the Black Rainbow” as much or more than I did. The entire audience–those that didn’t walk out, there were at least 30 walk-outs–groaned at the end of the movie and all the chatter afterwards was negative.
The movie starts out well–great opening titles, awesome music, beautiful cinematography and colors–basically, everything that wasn’t in the writer/director’s hands was done expertly. But beware: this is a completely dull and, again, indulgent experiment by a director who, before the screening, pretentiously told the audience it was a “comedy”, which it is not.
Reminds me of several of the hidden object games I’ve played where some evil doctor has someone held in a prison for experiments….Only in the games the old psych wards or such are in horrible disarry and create a spooky ambience. This just seemed odd…
If I sat through that god-awe full ‘Enter the Void’ I could certainly sit through this. I’ll give it a shot.
’2001′ IS one of the greatest movies of all time (except for that stupid ending) so anything that reminds me of the style I’m on board.
Maybe it’s just me but I got an early Cronenberg feel from this trailer. That being said, I will probably not see this in the theater if I see it at all.
DVD for sure….I don’t want to see this on a large screen.
The movie is pretentious, and for the pretentious!
It is basically an overly long music video..conceptual tosh.
All style and no substance..
I had big hopes for it.. but sadly the best bit is the moody theme tune.
I like the main actor though.. but seriously this is not of the same caliber as Cronenberg,Kubrick or even Gasper Noe.
If you like the music, go watch Clockwork orange again, or even Manhunter.
There was the usual dystopian references..
For example, if you have never seen THX1138..then do ya self a favor and watch that instead of this nonsense.
