The 12 Best Movie Sequels Ever Made

#1) The Godfather: Part II

Godfather Part II Fredo and Michael

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of The Godfather, but apparently the second one is kind of good. It’s got something to do with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in alternating timelines and follows the rise of Michael Corleone as the Don of a legendary crime family, while simultaneously exploring the background of the late Vito Corleone and the beginnings of his crime empire. I don’t know. It sounds kind of lame to me (sarcasm alert!).

Who am I kidding, The Godfather: Part II is a sprawling epic that captures the intensity of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone in a way the first film simply couldn’t. While Godfather II doesn’t necessarily introduce a new scene-stealing new character like others on this list, it did broaden the scope of the iconic Vito Corleone with the sub-plot origin tale of how the Don came to be.

The scene that stands out and attacks the true heart of this film is also the coldest. The boat scene closes the complicated and fascinating relationship between Michael and his brother Fredo. The well-paced progression of their struggling brotherhood perfectly mirrors Michael’s own boiling rage, as he loses control of himself and his family. The image of Fredo on the boat is one I think of every time I look at a lake.

While The Godfather: Part III lacks the general adoration amongst movie lovers that the first two got, it may be the fault of a sequel which set the bar so high it still seems almost insurmountable. Anybody looking for a lesson on how to tell a great story need look no further than this sequel – the greatest of all time. Is it any coincidence that the writer, Mario Puzo, is on our list twice? (Puzo also wrote Superman II.)

  1. What about Kill Bill Vol. 2? An absolute masterpiece.

    • Una polla como una olla!

  2. I agree that the Godfather Part 2 was the best sequel but The Empire Strikes Back is the most important sequel. It is what every sequel strives to be when they film it. Being all around better than it’s original. I have to go against Spiderman 2 (I thought it was good), but in no way can it be over Silence of the Lambs.

  3. you forgot ninja turtles 2: secret of the ooze

    • THANK YOU! I’ve been saying that for years! The first one was so boring. Since we’re on that train, what about Short Circuit? Gremlins?

      • *You’re

    • your freaking stupid

  4. I loved Lethal Weapon 2… shows that an authentic new character can revitalize and add depth to the original characters… God Bless Pesci as Leo Getz!

  5. What about rocky 2????

    • He said “best movie sequels”…

  6. Usually when I read one of these lists, I notice some “obvious” things missing, but here, you pretty much nailed it. Of course, the goodness of a sequel is subjective, but this list got all the great and important ones.

  7. DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) !?

    • The best of all sequels.. French Connection ll… not even mentioned… you can’t be serious

  8. I believe “the color of money” is the best sequel.

  9. how obout avatar 2010?!?!?!?!?!

    • How could you have seen a sequel that hasn’t been filmed yet?

  10. evil dead II?

    • I went back to this article just to say that. Evil Dead II is one of the best examples of a sequel surpassing the original. This movie should replace “Aliens” place on this list.

      • yea tho part 2 was more of a remake than a sequel. which is why ive wonders how come the new Evil Dead wasnt just called Evil Dead 3/III

        • Maybe because everybody already calls Army Of Darkness “Evil Dead 3″… Also, the tone is very different. The remake is a pure in-your-face horror film, gore-heavy, that never relies on humor or irony. Evil Dead 2 was more than a remake, it expanded on the events of the first and the retold part was made as a reminder for those who hadn’t seen the original. A sort of “Previously in Evil Dead…” thing. Last but not least, Ash isn’t in it. I think the fans would be very disappointed in an Evil Dead movie that would be part of the original saga and wouldn’t feature Ash.

  11. WTH

    Luke I’m your father…..

    The worst sequel ever

    • The worst opinion ever.

      • Best comment on this thread.

  12. The LOTR movies taught us one thing: Don’t mess with Gandolf! And in Spider-Man 2, where was Doc Ock’s mother fixation like in the comics?

    • If you don’t want to mess with Gandalf, you might wanna start with spelling his name properly…

  13. spider man 2 copy cat rubbish
    x men two even worse

  14. Agree but khans my #1

  15. I agree but khans my #1

  16. “The second (Mad Max) film deserves recognition as a vast improvement over the first.” Uh, seriously? The first was the poignant drama of a man’s life torn to shreds because of one random act of gratuitous violence, its sequel only a good post-apo actioner. Bigger budget doesn’t necessarily mean better quality.

  17. Xmen 2????? It was horrible
