‘The Best Man Holiday’ Sequel In The Works

The Best Man Holiday The Best Man Holiday Sequel In The Works

Releasing a sequel over a decade after its predecessor is a tricky proposition. On the one hand, there is clear studio appeal to make a follow-up to a beloved film with a built-in audience. However, if the project isn’t done right, it could often disappoint core fans and subsequently sully the reputation of the franchise itself.

Such was the risk with writer/director Malcom D. Lee’s The Best Man Holiday. The film – which just released in theaters this past weekend (read our review) – is a sequel to the 1999 hit The Best Man and features the return of the entire main cast of the first film. While the original film is well-remembered by fans, there was no telling how its sequel would perform at the box office, especially against the likes of Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, but it managed to reign in over $30 million domestically against a $17 million production budget. In Hollywood, that kind of success can mean only one thing.

According to Deadline, Lee is in negotiations to write, direct and produce another film in The Best Man franchise for Universal. There’s no word yet on which cast members would return for the third film, but it doesn’t sound like any of them are contracted to come back. Lee is currently developing an untitled project for Fox Searchlight but is expected to begin work on The Best Man Holiday sequel soon.

The Best Man Holiday Reviews starring Taye Diggs Morris Chestnut Nia Long Sanaa Lathan Monica Calhoun Regina Hall and Terrence Howard The Best Man Holiday Sequel In The Works

The Best Man marked Lee’s directorial debut, and it’s easy to see why he would jump at the chance to continue writing for those characters. After all, none of his follow-up films – from 2002 comedy Undercover Brother to 2013 sequel Scary Movie V – have made as strong an impression as his first film. Since audiences clearly want more, it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

However, the difficulty with keeping The Best Man series rolling is in the contracts. Since the series relies so heavily on its ensemble cast, Lee may have trouble getting all the key players to commit to another film (In case you haven’t heard, star Terrence Howard knows a thing or two about contract disputes). If that’s the case, the film could either inflate its budget (thereby risking its chances to turn a profit) or pull a similar move as American Wedding – the third entry in the American Pie series (which also coincidentally has a sequel to its revival film, American Reunion, in development at Universal) – and simply write around the absence of some characters.

In any case, it sounds like Universal (understandably) wants to capitalize on the success of The Best Man Holiday and fast-track its sequel. Fans can only hope that development moves along smoothly and that Lee and company are able to lure back the likes of Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut and the rest of the cast.

  1. Wow, that was fast, especially considering that up until now, I don’t know anybody who even know the first one existed.

    • A decent amount of people knew about the first one, hence the reason this one did so well.

      • i highly doubt any success the sequel made, had anything to do with the seldom remembered original film. It’s not even a cult film. I remember the original film, but I had no idea this was a sequel to it until you said so, and that means that most of the average moviegoers had no idea either.

  2. Mr. Chestnut for T’Challa…i’ve thought he has good presence on screen since Ricky from BOyz

  3. Yeah, I gotta give it to Morris Chestnut. He acted his ass off in this film. I’ve had my doubts about him as T’Challa, but I can absolutely see it now.

  4. @ Darthballs, the success of this movie was due to the original movie. If the average moviegoer did not know about the original i highly doubt it would have grossed 30 mil a week after a blockbuster film. Guys just because you as an individual do not remember or know much about a movie does not mean that it did not have a following. There are TV shows and movies discussed in media in general and Screenrant in particular that are referred to as classics or that have a tremendous following that I do not know much about ( and I am a movie buff). But I never discount their following. It makes me want to see what the fuss is about instead of writing it off.

  5. YES!!!! Another Best Man movie. Next we are going to find out that Howard the Duck 2 is currently in production.

  6. Absolutely, lets do a sequel. Lee has nothing to loose. The writing and development of the story line for Holiday was brilliant. I believe it wont be a rushed process rather an answered request from the fans. I remember the 1st movie and thought its story line was also brilliant. Bought the Dvd and play it over and over again. So why not make a sequel. We have witnessed the release of “B” and “C” movies with much larger budgets than this.

  7. yes please do a sequel the first one was great but the best man holiday was very amazing yet sad but very funny also!!!”

  8. I personal loved both movies and everyone I know loved them too. I must see Q’s wedding and the foolishness that will lead up to it and I also think that Shelby’s Daughter is Q’s….so this 3rd movie will be a must see!

  9. Yessssss it should be another one this was amazing once you watch it you would appreciate life more & realize it’s to short to walk around angry or unhappy

  10. I would love to see a third best man, pls try to get the cast on board

  11. Please film a sequel. So want to know who Terrance Howard will be marrying. Try desperately to bring back all cast members. Hate that Mia was written out. Both movies are great

  12. Yes you need to make a Best Man Sequel..

  13. Absolutely Loved Best Man Holiday. I didn’t see the original so I was a little onut of the loop. My BFF clued me in. I will be catching up on cable over the holidays. Please please make a sequel I loved seeing male characters in such a positive vulnerable but strong view.

  14. 100% yes Sequel but you need to have Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut and the rest of the cast.Again if not it will not do very well and I love the movie

  15. Yes yes yes please make the sequel!! The first two were amazing and would love to see a third!

  16. Yes…i love it…& the sooner, the better. we don’t need to wait 10 yrs for the next one.

  17. Yes..hell yes…. Hurry up with this one

  18. I agree with Jessica and Ped…I loved both of the movies and I Definitely agree that there should be a third but I think the original cast is a must… just my opinion

  19. I just watched the best man after I saw the best man holiday. Both movies were Amazing! If there is to be a third one which ‘I hope!’ I would love to see all the original cast members in it. Obviously expect Mia. This story like was so funny, sad, and so real! It makes you look at your own life! I absolutely loved both movies. Just watched the beat man holiday for the second time and I still loved it. Still laughed and still made me cry! Love it. I pray there is a sequel/ 3rd movie! I love taye diggs and the whole cast!

  20. Please make a sequel to the best man holiday and keep the same characters except there wont be a mia sullivan character :-( so sad I love her in the movie. It would also be interesting if lance (morris chestnut) will be dating again.

  21. Are the gonna make another movie for Quentin

  22. The movie will only be as good as you bringing the original cast back again and Mia’s role being recreated as a memory that lance and the others reflect on. Unless…best man holiday was all a dream in lance’s head, at least the part where she died. It would be great to have a sequel in that case!

  23. Sometimes in life we must take a chance on things. Success is always the outcome that one hopes and plans for but we must always remember that where there is success there is always failure. What one must do is learn from his/her mistakes, in order to do better the next time. With that being said, I liked The Best Man, but I loved and truly enjoyed The Best Man Holiday. I hope that Lee is able to contract all of the characters from The Best Man/The Best Man Holiday, as they are the ones who make the movie what it is.

  24. I would love to see a sequel to this movie. especially if it’s written as well as this with substance and depth. movies centered on African American characters that are well written are hard to come by. You either have too much “slapstick” or you have so much depth that we won’t support it. So Yes by all means if the writing and story plot is as engaging, bring it on.

    • PS- forgot to mention, absolutely the cast is a must. They have developed a chemistry that delivers great timing. they seem to feed off each other. Like the “Ocean movies”.

  25. PLEASE…PLEASE…PLEASE DO A SEQUEL!!!! Those of us old enough to appreciate the first movie, were more than excited to finally follow our favorite cast as “grown-ups” in the real world. There can be no others but the original cast to pull off another success. I would hope money doesn’t interfere with this amazing story of positive African-Americans!!!

  26. It is only right the studio company commence the sequal the latest Best Man Holiday. The film left suspense towards Howard’s marriage and mate. I think it will be just as successful as the predecessor, if not, better. Lee should end it off strong. Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut should definitely reprise. Especially Morris, he brings the sex appeal, alongside with the great performance from the last and aggression. It is a must

  27. I do want The Best Man 3 movie. I hope the casts comes back to do The Best Man 3 movie.

  28. I have watched and thoughly enjoyed the two movies of “The Best Man” and ” The Best Man Holiday”. It would be so nice to know, that there would be a follow up to the most enjoyable and moving film that was ever made.

  29. A best man 3 is a MUST, A MUST I SAY. Quinton announces that he’s going to get married in Best Man Holiday and asks Harper to be his best man, Malcolm Lee needs to give us a follow up on who Quinton marries (I hope it’s Shelby) and he has to, has to give Lance a new love after he’s lost Mia.

I agree with everyone though that the only way a sequel will work is if the entire cast comes back (except Mia of course). This cast is the Best Man, without them Best Man is not best Man. Please Malcolm D Lee, please do a sequeal to Best Man holiday, you have to, NOT doing a sequeal to Best Man Holiday would be leaving us HANGING, INCOMPLETE.
