They know how to wield a gun, intimidate and take care of their own, all with an air of professionalism (to varying degree). We speak of course of the stars and supporting cast of gangster movies; the organized crime families and the men of law who pursue them.
Killing fellow criminals is one thing, but for those entrepreneurial souls ready to build an empire in society's margins - and defend it at all costs - their struggle for greatness and eventual fall is the stuff moviegoers yearn for.
How will the star-studded cast of this week's Gangster Squad stack up against the films that came before? We thought we'd look back to see just how far the bar has been raised on gangster movies over the years.
The genre is a massive one, but here's our list of the 10 Best Gangster Movies - In no particular order.
I’m guessing you’re a QT fanboy?? Personally, I thought those were the only two decent movies from QT, but far from being the “best” of any genre… I guess his style is kind of niche, you either like his style or you don’t. And I’m not really a huge fan of it…
Are these in order of ranking? If so how in God’s name is Road to Perdition ahead of Goodfellas and how is Goodfellas not in the top 3? I liked Road to Perdition, but it does not deserve to be on this list, I can understand you leaving out Casino but not while having Road to Perdition
If anything, it might be ranked backward, meaning 10 is the best and 1 is the worst. So technically Goodfellas would be number 3 in this list… But I don’t think it’s in order that way. I only say that because they left Godfather for the end…
I also really enjoyed Goodfellas. Probabl my favorite gangster movie. Liotta and Pesci really knocked it out of the park. I loved the exchange between them “You really are a funny guy!” lol
Never seen the original, but I agree that Scarface shouldn’t be on the list. It’s a VERY overrated movie in my opinion. I’m guessing you had American Gangster with Denzel Washington in mind when you’re saying they don’t like black gangster films? Washington is definitely an incredible actor, and I would personally have put that over Scarface any day…
Gangster movies tend to be mob movies, but not all mob movies are gangster movies. As a look at old Vegas, addiction, and corruption, Casino is a triumph. That being said, it lacks many of the themes and tropes that ‘gangster film’ brings to mind.
Plus, Scorsese having three films on this list seemed like showing up other directors, and there’s little Casino does that Goodfellas doesn’t also do. That being said, it’s listed in our honorable mentions at the end of the post
I, and many others, disagree with your contention that Casino isn’t considered a gangster movie. In fact, I see most people use mob and gangster interchangeably.
As much I liked Road to Perdition, I don’t know that it is a great “Gangster movie”. Although it s about gangster characters it doesn’t really follow the same convention of the other films. It’s as much a gangster film as it is a comic book film. I would have rather seen Casino or Carlito’s Way on the list.
Uh…where’s the original 1932 Scarface? While Brian De Palma’s 1982 remake gets more attention, the original is far superior in terms of style AND substance.
Carlito’s Way and American Gangster would go on my list. I can understand why Casino is missing because we have Goodfella’s and The Departed on the list. Sean Penn and Pacino were awesome in Carlito’s Way. Underrated movie.
My mothers neighbour is working part time and averaging $9000 a month. I’m a single mum and just got my first paycheck for $6546! I still can’t believe it. I tried it out cause I got really desperate and now I couldn’t be happier. Heres what I do, Great70.com
Where’s the Godfather Part II? I know The Godfather is the better movie, but I enjoyed the second just as much.
thats what I was thinking.. still its a good list. theres a few on there that I still need to see.
pulp fiction, reservoir dogs?
@dylan

This list is of gangster movies not overrated movies.
They’re great movies, and still popular to this day because of how good they were. Overrated would be Scarface.
Those are garbage movies compared to Scarface, which is popular 30 years later and will still be remembered long after QT’s garbage fades from memory.
+10000000
“City of God” shoudl make the top ten
DEFINITE Honorable mention. Not conventional ‘gangsters,’ but that movie is brilliant.

The intro to the list says they are in no particular order. Thank goodness.
I guess SR don’t like black and gangster films from the 30′s to 50′s.
You have Scarface there? The OG Scarface is way better than Al’s overacting.
@TrillaDude

Casino!
you missed some good flicks wheres American Gangster, Casino, Reservoir Dogs, Means Streets and City of God
Love Miller’s Crossing, one of the best gangster films I’ve ever seen. Gotta love the cameo by Sam Raimi too.
Goodfellas is one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Love that movie. It’s so great.
I’ll second that. Anytime I happen across it while channel surfing I’m instantly hooked again and again. It always feels fresh every time I see it.
Godfather Part II, Casino, Public Enemies
Public Enemies…yikes.

Goodfellas is my fav. So I’m funny like a clown? Do I amuse you?
I would put Bronx Tale in there but that’s just me.
where the hell is Casino!?
Uh…where’s the original 1932 Scarface? While Brian De Palma’s 1982 remake gets more attention, the original is far superior in terms of style AND substance.
The Godfather.
Goodfellas.
Scarface.
Reservior Dogs.
Road to Perdition.
American Gangster.
Gangs Of New York.
Casino.
Pulp Fiction.
Colors.
My top 10..
Carlito’s Way, one of Pacino’s best roles. Sean Penn was also great.
What a lame list.. How could ya not have Casino on there…?! Fail.
Carlito’s Way and American Gangster would go on my list. I can understand why Casino is missing because we have Goodfella’s and The Departed on the list. Sean Penn and Pacino were awesome in Carlito’s Way. Underrated movie.
White Heat, American Gangster, The Roaring Twenties, Scarface(original), Little Caesar and for the oddball choice Gomorrah.
Ps. Can we all agree now that the Untouchables is a cheesy vapid mess of a film.
My mothers neighbour is working part time and averaging $9000 a month. I’m a single mum and just got my first paycheck for $6546! I still can’t believe it. I tried it out cause I got really desperate and now I couldn’t be happier. Heres what I do, Great70.com
crappy crappy list! no res dogs, or godfather 2! millers crossing is a good film but is boring as hell. i wouldnt put that in the top 10
Where’s Dillinger and Bonny and clide
This post should be called; Best gangster movies this author’s ever seen.
Either that or they have poor taste. I can name a ton of movies that are better than half the films on that list.
New Jack City surely should have made this list.
I love mob movies like Godfather
I would’ve included Carlito’s Way and Casino.
American me real stuff!!!!!
