I’d like to think that people who enjoy cult movies are open to anything that their original conceptions – that probably kept them away from the movie – were completely wrong about. Everyone thought “They Live” looked like bad, cheesy sci-fi – only later to find out that it’s a biting, hilarious satire.

So, since no one has mentioned it, I nominate – form the director of the “Mad Max” trilogy:

“Babe: Pig in the City”

One of the most original films I’ve ever seen, and my favorite as well. It’s 90 minutes of madness from beginning to end, is endlessly inventive and is insanely fun.

Anyone that mentioned “Dark City” should consider a double-feature with both, which are surprisingly similar: both were released in 1998, both shot primarily on film sets in Australia, both are set in cities with many noir elements, and (oddly) both feature a scene in which a goldfish bowl is dropped and broken, at which point the protagonist saves the goldfish.

Also – it’s totally awesome.

A GREAT list of personal favorites – but Cult Classics?? I don’t know.

How can you call a great movie like “Blade Runner” a Cult Classic?

I’m not sure you can even call “Office Space” (one of my ALL TIME favorite movies) a cult classic anymore – who hasn’t seen this movie?

“They Live” is my idea of a true cult film – low budget, little box office and great ‘drops’ that hard core fans recite regularly.

Not sure how it did when released, but I have to commend 790 on calling out “Omega Man”. My brother and I saw this movie several times on the late-night movies (pre cable TV) and thought Heston was the Man! Another classic from that late-night time slot: “Robinson Crusoe on Mars”

I come extremely late to this post and only just saw it with the new front page of screen rant.

Some films I would add:

Ghost World (although it may not be popular enough to even be called cult…maybe obscure but hey I met one of my best friends through a mutual appreciation of that movie)

Almost all of Bruce Lee’s movies.

Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master. I like the 2nd one better but I believe it was a lot more popular than the first.

I guess you could call the whole genre of kung fu movies a cult genre as they were obviously popular in Asia just not in North America.

That is some funny stuff, and it spawned an entire series of loosely connected films by Kevin Smith.
It fits all the criteria… low budget, box office flop, huge rental popularity, and an extremely loyal following.

What! No Godzilla Movies. not the American version.To me that movie was an insult to Godzilla fans every where, but funny enough it was in The new Godzilla movie Final Wars.And Godzilla roasted his tuna eating @$$.If you are a Godzilla fan take a look at the new movies that are out on DVD.

Sid and Nancy; outstanding performance by Gary Oldman as usual.

Clerks; maybe you have to be from Jersey to appreciate this, but I love it!

Glad to see you included “Breakfast Club” Vic. It’s one of my fav’s. One of those movies I can quote every line from. I would possibly add St. Elmo’s fire too.
