  5. Hey guys great podcast as alway, on the drax topic, best actor in my opinion to play him is Tom Hardy. He can do a lot with a little amount of speech and has already proved himself repeatedly last year!

    • Never going to happen, not right after playing Bane. He’s also too busy with Mad Max, Splinter Cell, etc.

      • That sucks, he would make an interesting Drax. I don’t know about everyone else but I say they get John Rhys-Davies to voice Groot. He made a great Treebeard.

      • Thats a good point, he wouldve been an interesting cast though

    • It’ll be really intriguing to see who they cast for those movies – and where all these auditions fit in.

  6. While I was listening, I checked out Derren Brown Apocalypse and man that was super crazy and so hilarious and awesome at the same time. The part that I thought was sketchy was at the end when they do a time lapse and they show it’s been 28 Days Later. I really hope they did that on purpose.

Looking forward to Man of Steel, Star Trek, The Hobbit, Thor, Iron Man 3, This Is the End probably, I dunno there’s too much to count.

    • I’m really excited for ‘This is the End’ too. Hopefully it lives up to expectation.

  7. My favorite movie of 2012?

    Moonrise Kingdom

    Avengers in 2nd place.

    Most overrated?

The Dark Knight Rises…… which wasn’t even included in the LA poll.

    • Agreed. Dark Knight Rises was a great film but also greatly overrated. Most underrated? The Amazing Spider-Man.

      • I almost talked about The Amazing Spider-Man but I also get the criticisms of it. Hopefully they really knock it out of the park for part 2.

I still need to see Moonrise Kingdom. Kofi reviewed it (and we weren’t covering it on the podcast), so I elected to skip that one in theaters.

        • I think Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be pretty great. It definitley has a solid cast to boot. And I missed Moonrise Kingdom as well.

  8. 1. Gangster squad
    2. Zero dark thirty
    3. Texas Chainsaw
    4. Django Unchained
    5. The Hobbit
    10. Lincoln

I completely agree with Ben on Chronicle being the best film of 2012, it was a extremely creative film that changed what was expected from found footage movies. But i’m surprised that no one has even mentioned “Safety Not Guaranteed” starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass as the best ‘unsung hero of films’ of 2012. It was (apart from chronicle) the most compelling film in my opinion of 2012. The overall feel of the movie just had something special to it that I can’t put my finger on. Each character goes through a transformation throughout the film that is so subtle yet so grand. The ending may have fallen short but it does leave you on the edge of your seat wondering. It meshes scifi, drama, romance and comedy together but still flows without any hitches. I could go on about this film, but I just want to get my point across which is that I do not feel it is getting the credit it deserves. Great job on the podcast yet again, i’m going to for sure listen to every single one for 2013 like I did in 2012 :)

    • Glad you also liked Chronicle. I wasn’t sure how people were actually going to react to that choice.

I need to see Safety Not Guaranteed as well… I’ve heard good things (and enjoy Mark Duplass).

  9. Rob talks insanely fast!!!!

And I can’t wait for Guardians Of The Galaxy to start filming!!!

    • @Tay – HAHA! You should hear him in person. He’s a spunky little Canadian. :)

    • It’s true. Too fast at times. With Guardians I had SO much recap to get through off of memory.

      • All of that recap from memory? Dang man!

      • And you didn’t even mention that JGL is out of the running. But I guess you guys recorded this before that news broke.

  10. Monday, January 07, 2013
    #1 Gangster Squad
    #2 Zero Dark Thirty
#3 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
    #4 A Haunted House
    #5 Texas Chainsaw 3D
    #10 This is 40

  11. Im so tired of JGL, so much so I abbreviate his name.

I have heavy doubts of Derren Brown: Apocalypse’ legitimacy.

Avengers is overrated but I can only say that because some zeal has worn off after viewing 15 times, the last battle is very rewatchable though. My only critic is that even after the first viewing its never made clear what lokis plan was before invasion and the “interrogation” with black widow and the arguement next to the blue staff in the next scene are the worst/most forced part of the film. And why tony wouldnt be aware his building was being used and how he figured it was a bit of a leap

Theres one movie from 2012 I missed to see(besides rise of the guardians) and that was Robot & Frank, heard of it?

Worst movie I saw of this year was probably Detention along with Project X

    • Seconded on “Project X” but… don’t tell Kofi.

    • I actually really would like to see Krasinski get a shot at a Marvel film and, like Rob mentioned, it does sound like they have a continued interest in him.

      • Yeah I remember when he was in the running for cap I thought at the time that’s not the superhero role for him and I was holding out trying to place him but star lord or ant man. If give him a shot ecause he really is a talented diverse actor inthe things besides the office I’ve seen him in. Hopefully he gets a shot.

  12. 1 – Zero Dark Thirty
    2 – Gangster Squad
    3 – Django Unchained
    4 – A Haunted House
    5 – The Hobbit
    10 – This is 40

  13. That would be crazy if they killed off Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness. I do see them killing someone from the Enterprise crew, but I think Kirk is off limits until the third movie.

My most overrated movie from last year would have to be The Hunger Games. I don’t know what it was, but I never got all the hype surrounding it. I thought it was just OK.

    • That’s my theory – I just don’t see them going after Kirk this time around. I could be wrong (and I’ll owe Kofi $50) but it seems like a weird move (just to semi-nod to the original ‘Star Trek 2′) given the fact they just got this franchise off the ground.

  14. I had to pause halfway through to look up Derren Brown: Apocalypse and it’s pretty great. I forgave some of the shady parts since the guy’s reaction to everything was so genuine and didn’t seem fake at all. Really interesting and fun show. Agreed with Kofi too, I want to see more like it.

It’s a shame we can’t hear the stories about the Dredd comic con screening. Sounds a bit crazy!

Anyways, keep up the fun podcast, SR. :)

    • The Dredd Comic-Con screening was kind of nuts but, if it makes you feel any better, we forgot to fill Kofi in after we were done recording. So you’re not alone!

      • Haha kinda does actually. :)

  15. Well kofi just lost $50 dollars. Clearly Sherlock is Spock’s brother. My theory is that Spock’s mom had another child (sherlock). In the 2009 movie the vulcan children called his mother a “human whore”, this could mean that she had another child.

      • The bet should of been on whether if Sherlock fights Kirk & Spock,Sherlock gets caught easily (too easy), Spock and kirk wonder why, A event happens (starfleet funeral or something else) Sherlock uses this moment to easily escape and take over the Enterprise Joker/loki/Siliva Style.

  16. My favorite movie of 2012 was probably Paranorman, then… Dredd 3d.
    Most overrated is Avengers
    Most anticipated Pacific Rim

For the record a robot punching a monster to death is WAAAY cooler than shooting it. Unless you are shooting it with a detachable fist

    • I just recently saw ParaNorman and REALLY enjoyed it!

Now that you mention it, if there’s no detachable fist punch in Pacific Rim, I’m going to be disappointed.

  17. My favorite of 2012 is Looper. It was always one of my most anticipated for the year and it did not dissapoint in any way.
My most anticipated for 2013 is Man of Steel. The trailer sold it for me.
Also I’d like to add my 2 cents on The Justice League and what WB/DC has planned…
I honestly think that as of right now Snyder is going to direct. I think the studio is just holding off until MoS is released and if it breaks the bank opening weekend and it’s critically well received we will get an announcement right away.
Of course I think that if they really wanted to build buzz for MoS and TJL they would announce it soon but IMO they’re so afraid of dropping the ball or any negative feedback that they’ll wait.

    • I actually just laid-out a similar theory with Andrew Dyce in e-mail. I’m expecting a big Comic-Con reveal for the ‘Justice League’ project – naming the director and, like you say, using ‘Man of Steel’ as a jumping point for buzz.

    • That’s what I’ve been saying for quite some time too. I think Snyder’s the man for it if MoS is a homerun.

      • Snyder for Justice League? Count me in. That will be the best thing that can happen for this movie now.

        • I agree on Snyder as well!

      • I’d be more than ok with Snyder helming JL, especially seeing how Man of Steel seems to be shaping out.

    • I also want to add that I’m a male and I actually enjoyed Jennifer’s Body. 😉
It’s high on my guilty pleasures list and I embrace it for it’s awfulness.

  18. Excellent podcast, guys. You made Derren Brown Apocalypse sound very interesting, so I checked it out earlier, and I must say, it was actually very intense, emotional, and awesome. I thought it was a great concept, and would love to see that transition over to American television. Unfortunately, that won’t ever happen, because we’re far too conservative for something like that. But, then again, maybe it will, since 90% of American television is stolen from British television, anyway. If you guys know of anything else cool and interesting like Apocalypse, please, I’d love to hear about it!

    • Here’s a list of some of Derren’s other specials:

      Secret of Luck
      Game Show
      Hero at 30,000 feet
      The Assassin

Just search for any of these titles with “Derren Brown” and you’ll find the entire thing on YouTube.

      • Awesome. I will definitely check those out. Thanks!

      • I just watched the first half of apocalypse – and Derren’s monologue at the beginning was creepy. His whole speech about being faced with difficulty to appreciate life felt like he was auditioning to become the next jigsaw.

  19. 1) Zero Dark Thirty
    2) Gangster Squad
    3) Haunted House
    4) Django
    5) Les Mis
