Fox Gives Full Season Orders to ‘Ben and Kate’ and ‘The Mindy Project’

Just last week we asked your opinion on Fox’s two new comedy series Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project. This writer found plenty of charm in Ben and Kate, and 37% of those who voted in our poll agreed. In addition 38% of those who voted loved The Mindy Project as well.

Now there’s good news for those readers straight from Fox today as the network has given full season orders to both shows.

Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment at the Fox Broadcasting Company said:

“‘Ben and Kate’ and ‘The Mindy Project’ have everything we want to stand for in comedy: smart writing, hugely appealing casts and comedy that feels contemporary and real – which is why we’re confident they will continue to build on what is already an appointment comedy night for young, influential audiences on Tuesdays.”

Ben and Kate follows the loving but sometimes troubled relationship between a manchild of a brother (Nat Faxon) and a high strung sister (Dakota Johnson) as they navigate life with Kate’s five-year old daughter (Maggie Elizabeth Jones) and a pair of encouraging but sometimes misguided best friends (Lucy Punch and Echo Kellum). The series is very sweet and is slowly coming into its own. For more, you can check out our review of the Ben and Kate series premiere.

The Mindy Project sees Mindy Kaling (The Office) as a single doctor trying to balance her romantic and professional life. It feels like a cross between Girls and New Girl with Chris Messina (The Newsroom) playing her stand-offish co-worker (there might be the potential for a love interest down the road). Guest stars like Ed Helms, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers have made for some interesting episodes, but the series needs to pick up the pace to be laugh out loud funny rather than mildly amusing.

Both series give Fox a solid comedy line-up joining the already successful New Girl and Raising Hope on Tuesday nights, and it’s good to see the network giving fresh comedic voices a chance rather than cutting and running as many viewers have come to expect from the network who gave Arrested Development the axe.

Ben and Kate airs Tuesdays at 8:30 and The Mindy Project follows an hour later at 9:30 on Fox.

Ben and Kate is a funny show. That Mindy Kaling show is one of the worst pieces of cr*p on television.

Loved ‘Ben and Kate’ so far. Very funny show. ‘Mindy Project’ has been somewhat disappointing. Loved her on ‘The Office’ and my wife said her book was really good so I had high hopes for the show. Oh well. I’ll continue watching the rest of the season to see how it plays out but not expecting much.

The wife and I really enjoy Ben & Kate. We didn’t get into the Mindy Project, but I’m glad FOX is giving sitcoms a chance and not cutting these shows and adding a 1/2 hour reality TV show or a recap of X-Factor or something else on those lines.
