To many film aficionados, Richard Linklater’s pair of indie romances Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) are among the best on-screen love stories in the past couple of decades. The films, for those unfamiliar, follow the relationship between a pair of travelers (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) as they cross paths at various points in their lives.

Both Sunrise and Sunset were critical darlings and proved to be financially successful, but last year, word broke that Linklater, Hawke and Delpy had completed work on a third entry, entitled Before Midnight. Further details on the project have been scant for months, but now, fans of the continuing adventures of Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy) are one step closer to revisiting the characters.

Sony Pictures Classics has announced that the studio has acquired North American and United Kingdom distribution rights to the film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. SPC also picked up Kill Your Darlings, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Daniel Radcliffe, at the festival. Columbia Pictures released Before Sunrise, while Warner Independent handled distribution for Before Sunset.

According to Deadline, Before Midnight earned rave reviews during its premiere, resulting in one of the biggest deals at Sundance. The film – written by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy – takes place in Greece in real time, a full nine years after the events of the previous installment.

Many fans of the first two films will likely be thrilled that the series is becoming a trilogy about how two people evolve and change over time, in no small part due to their interactions with each other. Still, Sunrise and Sunset appeared to book-end the story so well that the questions remain as to whether or not this third entry is worth damaging the legacy that the series has established thus far.
