Michael Keaton Still Up For ‘Beetlejuice 2′

beetlejuice 2 Michael Keaton Michael Keaton Still Up For Beetlejuice 2

Plans for a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 hit Beetlejuice go as far back as 1990 when screenwriter Jonathan Gems penned a draft titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. There’s very little known about that script other than it involved the title character entering a surfing competition. Thankfully, that never materialized.

There was also some talk of continuing the franchise via the direct-to-video market, likely because at this point a second Beetlejuice isn’t as safe a bet as it would have been in the early 90′s. Still, the passage of time hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of star Michael Keaton, who recently indicated he’s as ready as ever to return to the title role.

At a press junket for Toy Story 3, the 58-year-old actor told Moviehole:

“Oh I’d do that in a heartbeat… that’s the one thing I’d love to do again.”

Keaton isn’t alone. Back in April his Beetlejuice co-star Geena Davis¬†also¬†expressed interest in a follow-up. While this is by no means an official confirmation that the project is moving forward, it’s still nice to know that Keaton would be game if the film ever did get off the ground. Especially in this age of reboots and remakes.

I can’t help but feel that if Beetlejuice 2 does come to fruition, it would be better to surround Keaton with brand new characters. Too many sequels wind up needlessly complicated by ridiculous attempts to make sure every returning character gets shoehorned into the story. There’s no reason for Beetlejuice to remain tied to the family from the first film. It’d be a lot more fun to watch him antagonize someone new.

Either way, Keaton is an immensely talented actor and I’d love to see him return to this sort of physical comedy.

What are your thoughts on a Beetlejuice sequel after all these years? Would you want to see more of the original cast return or are you ready for something new?

  1. I love to see a new Beetlejuice movie! The idea of hearing that Geena Davis and Michael Keaton would be returning to reprise their roles if a possible sequel was ever made is fantastic! If all them could return again it would be amazing but of course time has taken its toll on some of the stars. Such as Jeffery Jones he has become really heavy over the years but the right amount of excerise and work out he could be to the size he was at that time.

    • Why would Jeffrey Jones need to lose weight? This is 25 years later.. he aged and put on weight. Big deal. Plus, he got arrested for child porn in the meantime anyways.. leave him out of the sequel.

  2. I am definetely up for a sequel to Beetlejuice, the first one was awesome and if a sequel is filmed i would love to see him with new characters also. Thanks for listening to my submitted information.

  3. hi, i’m from france and i’m a Keaton’s fan.
I hope there will be the sequel. Tim Burton cannot change the actor for the beetlejuice character (even if Johnny Deep would be a good choice)… With the make up the role needs, who could see the difference? I don’t think the problem is the figure but above all the energy: 58 years old? it’s not too late but Burton can’t wait. About Geena Davis, Winona Rider and Alec Baldwin… it’s not necessary to disturb them.

  5. What about Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as possible new characters since they are both tied to Tim Burton.

    • are you kidding me? i hope johnny depp and carter never make a single movie together again. talk about overkill. you must be young. you NEVER destroy a classic. NEVER. BEETLEJUICE 2012!

  6. I would love to see another beetlejuice! I think it would be fun if the old family helped stop beetlejuice from harassing a different family

  7. I actually don’t know the reason why they still haven’t had Michael Keaton make Beetlejuice 2..! After a lol all these years there should’ve been a part 2&3… I luv this movie it’s the best ever.

  8. BeetleJuice has always been my absolute favorite movie . This is one of Keaton’s finest roles. He really is the ghost with the most babe! The actor best known for his smarmy smile and plunging eyebrows imbues the appalling Betelgeuse with an almost loveable charm. Belching, farting, and scratching his crotch with ferocious abandon, he’s the disgusting kid that every 12-year-old boy wants to be. But Keaton doesn’t let Beetlejuice become a simple parody; he also gives him soul, a self-assurance that electrifies the chalky face paint and mold. Keaton inhabits Betelgeuse. Nearly all of the ghoulish prankster’s lines were improvised and though the character is only in the film for a mere 17 minutes, they are the film’s most exhilarating and amusing minutes. Im just shocked there hasnt been a part 2 yet!
Signed …tired of wondering what could have been, should have been. (:
