The Ghostbusters are slowly but surely planning a return to active duty, so why not the self-proclaimed 'Ghost with the Most' himself, Beetlejuice.

One of the stars of Tim Burton's cult hit from 1988, Geena Davis, has offered her services for a sequel - albeit in tongue-in-cheek fashion - during an interview with Moviehole while promoting her new film, Accidents Happen, in Sydney.

In Beetlejuice, the now 53-year-old Davis played one half of a recently-deceased couple, The Maitlands, who enlist the services of a "bio-exorcist" to get rid of the annoying family that has moved into the house they haunt.

Of course, Michael Keaton was the center of attention as the titular character, and rightly so;  his in-your-face comedic talents were in full flight, while Alec Baldwin (now a multi-Emmy Award winner due to his work on 30 Rock), played a straight-laced supporting role as Davis' hubby.

Here's what Davis had to say on the subject of Beetlejuice 2:

"It's funny, [another journalist] just asked me about a sequel to Beetlejuice - which, though I haven't heard anything about it, might be interesting ... I would do that!"

A follow-up to Beetlejuice has been talked about for years. Jonathan Gems, who worked with Burton on the script for Batman (1989) was hired in 1990 to write the Beetlejuice 2 screenplay. The result was Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, and featured the title character winning a surfing competition. Suffice to say, it never saw the light of day.

While excited about the thought of a Beetlejuice sequel - but maybe not one involving Hawaiian shirts and dead guys (it's already been done!) - Davis did raise one concern she had with any potential  continuation of the story.

"Thing is, do ghosts age? Wouldn't we be stuck in the age we were? Alec [Baldwin] and I would have to look as we did then - who knows, maybe we could? I better get in touch with Tim Burton".

With Burton re-imagining Alice in Wonderland using state-of-the-art CGI and 3D, he might now like to reconstruct Beetlejuice in photo-realistic CGI. The film's undead world certainly lends itself to such technology.

And it would certainly solve Davis' aging issue. If Robert Zemeckis could turn Ray Winstone into an Adonis for Beowulf, there is certainly hope for Alec Baldwin.

Personally, I’ve always wanted to see Beetlejuice team up with Regan from The Exorcist. Maybe a When Harry Met Sally-type love story?

What do you think - would you like to see Beetlejuice 2 happen, CGI and all?
