Score! The New York Post is reporting that MTV has decided to move forward with new episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head. Rumors surfaced last week that series creator Mike Judge was outlining a new batch of episodes in hopes that the network would pick them up and now it’s official – the perpetually adolescent duo will return.

Beavis and Butt-Head first appeared in Judge’s short animated film Frog Baseball which was shown on MTV’s Liquid Television. The network then ordered a full series based on the misadventures of the slacker protagonists. Beavis and Butt-Head premiered in 1993 and its crude humor and animation style made it as successful as it was controversial.

The show’s popularity led to the feature film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996. Although MTV would ultimately pull the plug on the show a year later, Judge was always interested in returning to the characters in some form.

At one point a live-action Beavis and Butt-Head movie was mentioned and just last summer Judge hinted at a sequel to Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. One of his more interesting ideas was to catch up with the characters as thirty-somethings and maybe even as old men.

According to the NY Post piece, the new episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head will still focus on the characters as teenagers but update the music videos and celebrities they lambast reference to reflect the current pop-culture landscape.

The return of Beavis and Butt-Head isn’t the only piece of good news: apparently the show’s resurrection is MTV’s first step in scaling back on reality programming like The Hills and Jersey Shore.  Say what you will about Beavis and Butt-Head, at least their moral bankruptcy is intended to be satirical.

Although Beavis and Butt-Head is easily dismissed as being juvenile and offensive, I personally believe that Judge is one of the sharpest and funniest guys working in the industry. Everyone has seen and quotes Office Space endlessly but his lesser-known films Idiocracy and Extract are also wickedly funny and intelligent.

I can’t wait to see new episodes of Beavis and Butt-Head. What about you?

  1. this is great news!!!!!!

    • SWEET! I have every DVD put out for them and cannot wait for new stuff

uh huhuhuhuhu I said ‘put out’

  2. I think it was Patrick Stewart who said “Very smart people and very dumb people laugh about it for very different reasons.” I’m interested to see new episodes. :)

  3. I never stopped believin’…

  4. I AM THE GREAT CORNHOLIO!! Ha ha! Can’t wait.

  5. I’m just glad MTV has realized how far they’ve sunk- from a culturally important source of music and information to a ghost ship of dimwit pseudo-celebs.

  6. Really brightens up my day to hear that the dynamic duo are on the comeback trail, but do any of today’s kids even know what a music video was.

B&B eps had simple plots for their simple protagonists, but the real meat of the show was their scathing music video commentary and final verdicts of either “rules” or “sucks”.

When Video artists trying to one-up each other started driving up production costs, MTV devised the “Reality” show as low-cost alternative content. Simply find a hand full of bitchy but photogenic teens with incompatible personalities, throw them in a box, and let the games begin.
A lot less expensive than “Thriller”, and it drew almost as many viewers, for a while.

In Farm Country they call that “eating your seed corn”. Without Videos being produced in any significant quantity the B&B formula just doesn’t work, because the lads aren’t true idiots, but rather idiot savants who morph from bumpkins into witty and incisive critics when the music starts. When you buy the DVD sans the video sequences or they “do” America, all you have is non-stop idiocy, which gets old.

I hope that this is a sign that MTV is going to return to it’s roots and ramp up video production again. With today’s tech they can be made at a fraction of the cost that they once were. There is still tons of imagination and talent out there, all it takes is the will to look for it.

    • Agreed. And the NY Post article does say MTV is using the return of Beavis and Butt-Head as a “backdoor means” to return to showing music videos.

  7. Best news Ive heard all week!

  8. Best news I have heard in a long time! I can’t wait to see what they have to say about today’s music and the crap that is out there. One of my favorite shows of all time. I may just have to pop that in tonight instead of finishing Insomnia

  9. “Thith ith the cooletht thing I have ever theen!”

  10. love Beavis and Butthead !!
Loved their movie and always wanted another one .
I’m quite happy to have them back on TV .
King of The Hill has always been a big disappointment for me , although I can’t fault Mike Judge for wanting to do something different.
So , I’m happy that B&B are coming back :)

  11. BUTT DUMPLING!!lmao!!!

    • that goes without saying rogue-x!!!

  12. Greatest news ive heard in a while. Cant wait to hear what they say about Lady Gaga’s Videos or Chris Brown. Oh the infinite possibilities!

    “Duh Duh Dunna Da… DunnaNannaNuh-DanDunna-Duh!”

  13. Our society is already stupid enough, bringin this back will only make it worse.

    • yeah but it’s worth it beavis and butthead are freaking hilairious.

    • Are you sure that’s not Bill Hicks hiding out after faking his own death? :-)

    • Every Texan I know has told me pretty much the same. That if you aren’t from there, that you wont pick up on half of the gags in KOTH.

  14. Greatest news I’ve heard in a long time! It’s like a dream come true! Can’t wait to see these two “bungholes” back in action!

  15. I love this!!! Just dont have mtv:(

  16. You know what? I NEVER really liked B&B, yet I’m still excited about this news. I always thought it was a really stupid “potty humor” filled show, and the whole “video watching thing” they did bored the hell out of me. NOW I’m extremely curious to find out if this show was as intelligent and witty as say a Southpark or Simpsons and I was just too young and ignorant to know any better? Judging by some of my FAVORITE and brilliant movies like Idiocracy and Extract (which i wasn’t even aware were Mike Judge’s work), I’m sure that I’m going to be pleasantly surprised.

  17. Frog baseball anyone? I am so happy with this news.

  18. Maybe Im getting old (28) or maybe its just me but i watched some old episodes a year or two ago and it just wasnt as funny as i remember…I think that we will see that Beavis and Butthead were one hit wonders and only important to the 90′s.

Now Old school Tom and Jerry and the Simpsons still makes me laugh.

  19. I LOVE the old tom and jerry the new ones suck!!!!

  20. this is awsome cant wait to see them and i think when they start up again people will watch this ovr family guy andd south park i know i will so if you dont think the same way then you are all dillholes haa haa haa!!! no but really it will be awsome bring back good memories and make more so all you guys who love beavis and butthead as much as i do i guess you can say for us that we “scored” with this news

  21. > update the music videos and celebrities they reference

I’m all for seeing new B&B (or anything non-reality) but… Music videos? When does MTV ever air those anymore?

    • Tell me about it! I know this seems like a long shot, but maybe this resurgence will lead to the “Music” being put back into “Music Television”. Then again, they could always not have them doing music videos, which will lead to one of my favorite parts of the show being cut out.

  22. That is such awesome news. I haven’t felt the urge to watch that channel since they stopped playing music, but this will bring me back. At least until Jersey Shore comes on.
