Back in March we found out that Syfy was looking to find more ways of extending the life of its Battlestar Galactica franchise, seemingly knowing that Caprica wouldn't be lasting very long. Come October and it's confirmed that the network is producing a 2-hour TV pilot for a new BSG spin-off, titled Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Caprica of course, was canceled two days later.

While we've seen little about the upcoming Battlestar TV movie - and hopeful new series - we know that it's another prequel that takes place between the events of Caprica and BSG, this time following Bill Adama as a young ace pilot in the Colonial Fleet during the first Cylon War. We had the synopsis from the outset, but now we have our first visual aid as to what we can expect from the new designs the pilot will utilize.

The first official concept art released for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome comes courtesy of Blastr and depict a Raptor spacecraft, familiar to Battlestar fans, and several shots of the Cyclon designs.

The giant ice worm monster is actually a Cylon monster, dubbed a "Cython." The fembot seems to be an early attempt by the Cylons to mimic the human form, before they were able to make fully organic units that filled out the Cylon ranks in Battlestar Galactica.

And here's the Blood and Chrome synopsis:

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20′s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet’ the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.

The issue with Caprica, was not just that it was lacking in action, Cylons or space combat, which Blood and Chrome promises to deliver in spades, but that the characters for whom fans became emotionally attached to and engaged with were all gone. This TV pilot has some big shoes to fill if it hopes to beat out Caprica's short existance.

Can Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome deliver an exciting pilot TV film and spawn another successful television series?
