Even if you think a movie based on the board game Battleship is just one in a long line of stupid movie ideas, this is Hollywood and therefore anything that could potentially make money (no matter how “WTF” the idea may be) will get made at some point. Like it or not, a Battleship movie is fast on the way.
We already know that Peter Berg (Hancock, The Rundown) will direct Battleship from a script written by Jon and Erich Hoeber. The film already has a couple of its cast members, including Taylor Kitsch (Wolverine, John Carter of Mars), and Tom Arnold.
Today comes the news from Heat Vision Blog that Battleship has snagged itself another actor in Alexander Skarsgård, best known for playing Sheriff Eric Northman in HBO’s True Blood. Skarsgård will play the brother of Kitsch’s character, “a straight and narrow naval officer whom Kitsch, a wildly spirited naval officer, idolizes.”
Battleship will be Skarsgård’s first big role in Hollywood since True Blood. He’s starred in many films in his native Sweden, but snagged his first major English-language role in HBO’s Generation Kill before graduating to an even bigger role in True Blood.
Those who watch True Blood will hopefully agree that Skarsgård is awesome as Eric, and I couldn’t be happier that he’s starting to get noticed for other big roles. For example, he almost landed the role of Thor before Chris Hemsworth was cast as the God of Thunder. He also has other major roles on the horizon, including in a remake of the violent 1971 film Straw Dogs and Melancholia, from controversial Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier.
In case you’re wondering how they’re going to turn Battleship into a movie, the film will the film will focus on an alien invasion. You read that right; Battleship will “revolve around an international fleet coming together to battle a water-bound armada of otherworldly origin.”
According to Heat Vision, Battleship will start shooting on August 30th for a release on June 18th, 2012 (we previously heard it had been moved forward a week from July 25th to July 18th, 2012, in order to avoid competition with Men in Black 3D).
