Jim Lee Batman Black and Gray Costume Batman vs. Superman Rumor: There Will Be Two Batman Costumes

Batman vs. Superman has been delayed until 2016, which means we’ve got two more years of hearing rumor, hearsay, and assumption leak onto the internet before “fans” and mainstream moviegoers finally get to experience Zack Snyder’s vision of the most epic superhero team up of all time.

The latest rumor concerns what may (or may not ) be the new costumes (plural) that Ben Affleck’s Batman will wear in Batman vs. Superman - along with our own speculation about what Snyder and co. could be going for.

If RUMORS are not your thing – if speculating and discussing comic book movies is not something you enjoy – then read no further. If you ARE interested, then by clicking through you acknowledge that your here to play in the land of hearsay and talk shop with other invested fans down in our comments section. None of the following has been CONFIRMED.

The multiple Batman costume(s) rumor comes by way of Latino-Review, which reports the following:

The more interesting thing I’ve heard is that Batman will actually wear 2 batsuits in the film, but where as Grey-and-Blue has already been designed and Affleck has worn it, the second Batsuit is more armored like the one in the Dark Knight Returns and Kingdom Come comics.

According to the source, the plating is silver/white. The plates are attached to a black undercloth. The plates doesn’t cover his entire body. We see the black undercloth at the joints. Supposedly, it looks incredible. Equally, or maybe even better-looking than the other suit and it’s leagues above and beyond Bale’s suit from what I’m told… I’m told you’ll see it in February/Early march.

This report puts yet another brush stroke on what is quickly becoming a pretty clear picture. First came Kevin Smith’s hints that Snyder had gone with a costume that’s never been done on film yet, but that comic books would love (suggesting a more classical comic book look instead of black body armor, like the movies). Next, came rumor that artist Alex Ross’s designs would be incorporated into the film (designs echoed by artist Jim Lee, who helped launch the contemporary New 52 Batman costume). Even Ben Affleck’s wife Jennifer Garner’s claims that the new suit is hard to peel off lent certain credit to us seeing a gray spandex version of the Dark Knight.

Batman by Jim Lee

However, so far the talk has been of gray-on-black classic design; Latino-Review‘s report points to a blue-and-gray classic design. So that’s a discrepancy to keep an eye on. As for the armor claim: it makes sense, and here’s why:

From the start Snyder and David S. Goyer (whose script is being re-written by Argo’s Chris Terrio, by the way) insisted they were drawing inspiration from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which climaxed in one of the most famous Batman vs. Superman battles, ever. In that battle, Batman had to armor himself up for specialized Superman combat, and logic follows he’d have to do the same in Batman vs. Superman.

There’s also the factor of Jim Lee. Right now, overwhelming evidence points to Jim Lee (either the man himself or his designs) being the basis for this new onscreen interpretation of Batman. If that’s true (remember, we’re only speculating here), then Lee has already sketched the classic costume (with both black and blue cowls) and a Batman alloy armor that sounds very much in line with Latino-Review‘s description:

It would make sense to have Lee – one of the main architects of DC Entertainment’s synergy-minded New 52 reboot – being the creative basis for the new Batman costume. Again: not saying that’s what’s DEFINITELY happening, just saying it would make sense and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Lee’s designs – or some variation of them – are where we could indeed be headed.

Armor, I think we can all agree, is a must. If BatAffleck is truly going to start out running around in something like the classic spandex costume, then part of the movie is likely going to involve Batman coming to terms that he’s on a whole new playing field with a guy like Superman around.

“I am the Batman now!”

An earlier rumor stated that at the start of the film we find Bruce Wayne semi-retired and enforcing order through a squadron of drones – which would establish the precedent for the Caped Crusader to have the sort of advanced tech array that could include armor and other anti-Superman weaponry. Just like in Dark Knight Returns. (See how I brought it all back around?)

Batman vs. Superman will be in theaters on May 6, 2016.

  1. The new 52
This new vision should be put along the lines of the New 52 comics line. this would make the most sense as the whole DC line has had a top to bottom revamp. That said, to bring the movie audience on board with the books. Sorry, no underwear on the outside of the pants! DC fixed that with the New 52. Will wait patiently for the new movie as Man of Steel was excellent! Keep the tone and feeling of that and it will be best picture of the year. I have extreme faith in Zack Synder that he will do justice for The Justice League! LONG LIVE THE BAT!

    • Also, as for the “underwear”, no their TRUNKS. They were put on for a special reason and there is far more meaning and value to it than other people failed to acknowledge. They were put on out of paying tribute and homage to the strongman, which is a symbol of masculinity, curage and heroism. And tha is the same tribute that should be continued to be payed. It has served him well for a long time. Out of all the different outfits that came and gone in the past in the comics, there’s only ONE suit that has survived and stood against of time – the classic outfit, including the red trunks and everything of what it means and what it stands for. And those are the same values of what it’s all about and what it represents. I mean, it is true that a hero is defined by the things he says, how he portrays his persona and how he performs his heroic deeds. BUT! It is the costume that helps give the hero the ability to stand out. It has survived and proved it has stood against the test of time. It’s most famous. it’s iconic. it’s legendary. And most of all, UNIVERSAL!!! And , even to this day, that look is STILL around, alive and well, thanks to dc comics’ “Adventures of Superman”, which is a very high quality, successful comic title, which started in 2013 and is still going strong a year later, and that says a whole lot

So, my saying is, let alone the traditional look, respect the Trunks, respect superman

      • Everybody now down to the oracle here, the only person who knows what DC’s characters are “really all about”. Because certainly DC themselves have no idea, right? Christ.

If anything’s killing the comic industry it’s petty graspers like you, acting like it’s still an underground pastime when comic book movies have brought in billions over the last decade.

        Grow up.

  2. This whole concept, the casting if both super heroes, the costumes, story…it’s all going to be an epic failure.

The Man of Steel was not that great as a movie; they should have gone with an actor other than Henry Cavil.

Ben Affleck is not a bad actor, but there were so many better choices available, not to mention we have to mentally separate ourselves from The Dark Knight Rises, where, in a “realistic” universe, Batman barely defeated Bane, a mortal whose physical abilities were enhanced by a special gas mask.

Now we jump into an alternate universe where two relatively weak actors will do battle as Batman and Superman.

General Zod possessed the same powers and intellect endowed to Superman yet lost to him; yet we are expected to buy into a storyline that allows Batman to defeat him.

While it is true that Bruce Wayne possesses genius-level intellect as well as street smarts – while Clark Kent is all-powerful but as naive and trusting as Bambi – we know that superman really has one weakness: his vulnerability to Kryptonite.

Do how do you make this story spontaneous and interesting? I agree with everyone who says that Nolan and Co. need to scrap this, at least until Wonder Woman and Flash are made.

This is going to ruin BOTH the Superman and Batman franchises, and they won’t be able to reboot them for another 20 years.

    • just going to have to debunk a few things you pointed out. not that i don’t understand that you have an opinion and i think you are entitled to that.
first off, i see you say ben is not a bad actor and have to disagree. in recent years, almost the last decade to be honest he has had some stellar performances and rave reviews. yes, he is not a phenomenal actor (although he is as a director) but still he deserved to be called good. yes, i am disagreeing with your wording because acting is not an easy job and if someone is good at it i think they deserve credit for it. so ben, although not great is also not “not bad” or “meh”, he is good.
secondly, general zod almost beat superman and ultimately superman gathered the strength to overcome him. so yes, it is logical to think batman doesn’t stand a chance to beat superman. but if you have read the material of each of these characters even only partially you would understand that you are comparing a kickboxer to a football player. what i mean is batman vs superman fist to cuffs, superman will win 10 out of 10 times. but batman doesn’t think like that, he is a master strategist. yes he can fight, but he is still human, and no human can fight a dozen armed men head on. so the same ideas would go for fighting superman. example: the dark knight returns. i’d also like to say what i have said to everyone who says “how will superman lose to batman?! ermagerd!”. i don’t ever remember it being said that this is batman beats superman, the movie is batman vs superman (or superman vs batman, or whatever combination they choose. personally they should call it what it is, world’s finest). so really, batman could lose. there is no confirmation either way and won’t be till the movie is out.
the last thing i would like to correct you on is that you do not have a crystal ball and neither do i. so please sit down, and wait for the movie to come out. after that you can complain all you want.

    • Thank You for saying that! I thought henry cavil was great but the way the DCU is coming along they are going to kill any chance for this to work at all! Wonder Woman would be great f they started a great script and used Gina Carano and then had Ryan gosling or Lucas Till for The Flash. but this is really the best way to kill the movie scene

    • The movie will be great, listen, Harry Cavil done a great job, when you make movie about a super hero, you have get some that looks like him, and he does look like super face in the comics, Ben Affleck is great choice to play Batman have you forgotten he has won an Oscar last year that makes him a elite actor one of the best, and he has been acting for some time now, the bat suit is great, kind of throw back to the comic book bat man, and superman will probably have the same suit on, I is done great job with the that suit, well it will be a lot better that the anvergers movie not bad movie, but was not as good as all the hype, I make no sense half stuff in movie, you have got Samuel L Jackson playing nick fury when in comics nick fury is a white guy
you got the Hulk beating on when, it was not a good movie, Superman and Batman will kick the s*** out the Anvergers, btw marvel would be so big if Disney did not own mavel

      • An elite actor?? Not even close. Ben Affleck won an oscar for DIRECTING (one he didn’t deserve BTW, but I’ll concede he’s a very good director). Had they announced that Ben Affleck was directing the next Batman film, I’d be ecstatic. Casting him as the Bats himself? Not so much. Combine this with the fact that they aren’t even introducing this new Batman in his own film so that audiences can learn who he is, and you have a train wreck of immense proportions. Man of Steel proved that the film makers didn’t know what they were doing with Superman (Henry Cavill was fine). Batman vs Superman will cement that. Like a real train wreck, we won’t be able to turn away from seeing it, but after it’s over we’ll be haunted by the horror of it all.

  3. It’s okay, I guess, except for the stupid looking puckering around the neck of the cowl…

    • Dude. Those are just random action figures they used for illustration. They have nothing to do with the new film.

  4. Too bad Latino-review has released more than its fair share of fake and or discredited stories.

  5. No matter what Batman suit, or how many you use, this movie’s going down the crapper!
No matter what a turd wears, it’s still a turd…

  6. Blue and grey? Seriously?
    Please,God! NO,no,no,no,nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

  7. I would like to see this Batman use more gadgets like his batarangs and etc. to fight back like batman does in the animated series instead of just hand to hand combat id love to see him throw a batarang to take someone out haha

  8. Let’s see, Boredevil as Batman, a pimply faced geek as Lex Luthor. A pretty good actor as Kal-el. Throw in an anorexic looking WW and the chances of this not being an atrocious pile of excrement are about 21%. All that is missing is Gilbert Gottfried as commissioner Gordon.

  9. Gota have a new costume for Mr. bat-butt chin.

  10. This film will be delayed because the entire staff has no clue what they are doing.
