Should ‘Batman vs. Superman’ Include Dick Grayson’s Nightwing?

Dick Grayson Nightwing Batman vs. Superman movie New 52 Version Should Batman vs. Superman Include Dick Graysons Nightwing?

Lot of big movies coming in 2015 - Batman vs. Superman, Avengers 2, maybe Star Wars 7 – and since all of them are ‘shrouded in secrecy,’ it leaves a lot of room for some (fun or exhausting – depending on your outlook) speculation about what MIGHT be happening in these respective films.

As of late, Batman vs. Superman has been producing quite a few big rumors – namely that the list of DC Comics superheroes included in the film may not be confined to just Batman and Superman. There have been leaks about multiple actresses who fit the bill of Wonder Woman being tested for the film – and today brings a rumor that a certain famous superhero sidekick could be making an appearance, as well.

In their latest guerilla-style scoop, Latino-Review is claiming that Dick Grayson (a.k.a. the original Robin, then later Nightwing, and later Batman II, then Nightwing again) could be making an appearance in Batman vs. Superman. However, it’s important to mention that even L-R source El Mayimbe is quick to label this one as a RUMOR, since even he has been unable to confirm that this Grayson angle is indeed happening.

The scenario Mayimbe lays out is this: Ben Affleck’s Batman is tired and weary (which has been confirmed), and he seemingly had a falling out with his former sidekick, whom he has not spoken to in years. Beyond that, the circumstances that bring Grayson into the Batman vs. Superman story and conflict are not explained – nor is it clear whether the film would feature Dick Grayson, or one of his costumed alter-egos as well.

Dick Grayson as Nightwing

It’s been hinted by the cast and crew that this version of Batman will be unlike previous incarnations that have been onscreen. There are so many ways that BatAffleck could be distinguished from his predecessors – tone, costume – but one that hasn’t really been discussed that much is expanding the scope of his support system. Tim Burton and Chris Nolan’s Batmen relied mostly on Alfred or their contacts within the police dept. (Commissioner Gordon, John Blake); it was only Joel Schumacher who explored the idea of Batman’s iconic sidekick(s) on the big screen –  and he pretty much ruined the idea for everybody by the time Batman & Robin was throwing a neon-lit Robin and Batgirl at us.

The question is: has the time come to give Dick Grayson another shot at big-screen fame?

One thing that the skeptics have been worried about – besides the Man of Steel team crafting this sequel, or Ben Affleck being Batman – is that an imbalance of detail and attention could turn this SUPERMAN sequel film in the BATMAN show. (Out of the many early criticisms of this film no one has seen, that is pretty valid one.) We just got done with Batman ruling the big screen, and while I personally thought Man of Steel was a beautiful reintroduction to Superman, a lot of people disagreed with that sentiment. In short: the new Superman still needs to win over some folks. Hard to do if he’s taking a back seat to an overpowering Batman storyline.

However, the film also has to reintroduce us to a new version of Batman and establish not only who he is, but what his world is all about. Doing that right, without also over-doing it, is going to be tough; toss in some long history and a failed partnership, it gets even tougher. Think about this another way: sure, Dick Grayson could be used as  plot device – a way to provide quick expository background on who Bruce Wayne/Batman is (say, if a certain mild-mannered reporter came asking?) –  but would a quick cameo be enough?

And is there really going to be Wonder Woman thrown into this as well? Because at that point this all starts to sound more like a Justice League origin story than a  Batman vs. Superman movie… Seeing the ‘World’s Finest’ matching wits is juicy enough – do you really need all the extra bells and whistles?

It’s all rumor for now though, so let’s have some fun and discuss – before a statistical fraction of us end up disappointed by the actual answer to the mystery. Until then, how many “Make it Joseph Gordon-Levitt!” comments will we have to endure? A lot, I suspect.

  1. At the most we might get a wink or a nod that Nightwing exists, which is fine.

It’s not time for that story, not yet.

    • True, at least give them time to develop the new Batman first.

      • I agree. With the new batman being introduced through a Superman Movie, it’ll be different. As much as I love NightWing, it’ll make things to complex in my opinion.

  2. I thought Man of Steel was a beautiful introduction to Superman as well. As for Dick Grayson, I think a cameo would be fine. Or even a name reference but I want Nightwing in a movie so bad. Just skip Robin. This is a “older” Batman, just bring in Nightwing and you can do the good old Goyer flashbacks with his origin. But Nightwing is a must and then introduce Tim Drake or even Damian as the next Robin.

    • For it was the first half of the movie and also I don’t want superman getting sidelined in his sequel.. I mean how many reports have you heard about superman solely?

      • I find the majority of the reports aren’t about Superman because we saw him in Man of Steel already, we mostly know his character right now. But with major characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, they’re all completely new characters in the world. It makes sense for people to be interested to find out more about characters we haven’t seen yet than ones we’ve already seen in the first film.

        • Ok but arent you worried this is another marketing strategy to introduce the justice league…can’t you see it.

        • @Coldsc

But this is the issue everyone has. We are supposedly talking about a Superman sequel yet he are hearing about everything except Superman himself.

You can just see Batman being focused on more as he is the biggest property that Warner / DC have. They are clearly trying to have their cake and eat it too by trying to reboot Batan and at the same time test the waters for a Justice League film.

Superman is getting sidelined in his own sequel and it’s strting to become a bit ridiculous now.

          • “Superman is getting sidelined in his own sequel and it’s strting to become a bit ridiculous now.”

I think someone needs to explain to you the difference between “rumors” and “confirmations.”

Besides, the DCU started with MoS, so no… it’s not just about him.

            • Batman rumors = comments its as simple as that.

            • No difference need to be explained. We are getting a Superman sequel where you are rebooting Batman.

As awesome as Man of Steel was, it was agreed by many that the world saving, inspirational element of the character was missing and that MOS 2 would address that.

However it sounds like too much work is being spent on making a new Batman for another Batman franchise so early on after The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Despite a few easter egg moments , MOS did nothing to suggest a DCU as you are so falsely prophesying.

              • This is more a justice league prequal than an outright sequal. Dc is tryomg mot to follow marvel i can appreciate that

          • Thats what DC does with everything. Batman is the star of everything. Even in the animated movies. Batman/Superman: Apocalypse has no business being called Batman/Superman since Batman is barely even a secondary character in it. And Batman might as well have been the main character in the Flashpoint Paradox. I know Superman will have a massive role in this, it is his sequel after all, but as far as marketing goes, Batman will dominate it which is unfortunate because people will see Batman no matter what. I don’t care what you say all you Affleck haters, but you’ll be in the theater opening weekend just like the res of us so…

            • I totally agree, sell me my tickets, I’m ready to sit and watch it right now!

          • “I find the majority of the reports aren’t about Superman because we saw him in Man of Steel already, we mostly know his character right now. But with major characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, they’re all completely new characters in the world. It makes sense for people to be interested to find out more about characters we haven’t seen yet than ones we’ve already seen in the first film.”

Your comment is the same type of comment I responded to so I copy and pasted lol. People are more interested in the ‘new’ stuff than the stuff we’ve seen. Just because reports aren’t always talking about Superman, doesn’t mean Superman will be pushed to being a side character. What else do you want to know about the character other than what we’ve seen in Man of Steel? What’s a bigger report, Superman using his super breath or having Wonder Woman or Nightwing in the film? These are all just reports and like Mindbender said, rumors. When Dark Knight Rises was announced, there were far more reports about Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman showing up than Batman himself, because these characters would completely new.

            • would be completely new**

            • ^ ^ ^
              What he said!

    • WHOOAA hold on, Superman is going to be in this movie also??

      • And who is the actor playing him? :)

  3. In the Dark Knight Returns, Batman fights Superman with the help of the Robin girl and Green Arrow. And The Dark Knight Returns has been hinted on Comic-Con.

What if they are replacing the Robin girl and Green Arrow with Dick Grayson and Wonder Woman?

    • I think it would be cool to use Nightwing in this way. Batman would certainly have to use all of the resources available to him to take down Superman.

  4. Give Nightwing a movie with Batman in the next reboot as long as my girl Talia Al Ghul is in this series instead of that damn overused and overratted Cat. I swear it’s just F’ed up how much they use that one trick pony of a character. But in any case give Nightwing his own moment with Bruce/Batman instead of cramming.

    • i’d rather have a nightwing tv show (possibly CW) than a nightwing movie.

    • Maybe Olga Kurylenko could play Talia. Someone suggested that, and who knows…

  5. Agree. I would love to see nods to tons of characters, that have stories yet to come, but are seen ever so briefly in this movie. Similar to the Batman Easter egg in the last. But for the love of god, no credit scenes.

    • why no credit scenes?

      • …because that’s Marvel/Disney’s thing which they have already driven into the dirt. Let Marvel/FOX and Marvel/Sony copy them and keep WB/DC well separated.

        • and Sony. I understand people like the button scenes and it works for their movies and their fans, to them I say “good for you” but I don’t, at all. It pi*ses me off that I have to wait through laborious credits for a scene that might be people eating Shwarma? but it might be something to important to where the overall story arch is headed? I know people will say well don’t stay for it but I want to see the whole film that I paid to watch, I shouldn’t have to watch the film then a shi*y fu*king pirated end to know whats gone on?

Batman Begins had a teaser for the Joker in The Dark Knight, right at the end of the film, guess what, it worked I was excited for the next movie but I didn’t have to sit through credits.

          • +1

  6. I’d love to see Nightwing in a film but I don’t think this is the film to include him.

  7. i like Nightwing but not the robin concept if they flasbacks hopefully he’ll be like 16 so it could be somewhat realistic

    • Yeah, I’m hoping they just skip the whole Robin thing or retool it somehow. Having Bruce bring around a kid to fight villains like Joker or Black Mask is just off putting for me.

      • As unrealistic as it is, that’s what makes comics so joyful, the farther from reality the more dream like it really is. That’s what makes good movies and comics. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing a 11-14 aged Robin as long as the kids actor isn’t a joke like most kid actors are. Asa Butterfeild has proved himself serious worthy but doesn’t fit Robin in my opinion. Dakota Goyo has what it takes too…just color his hair and he’s BOY WONDER!

  8. The good news for WB is that they own all of these properties, so it’s not like they’ll loose them if they screw up. They can reboot in ten years or so.

  9. It makes sense that if Batman is aged, then there has to be a Nightwing or a Red Robin around somewhere.

and if he is fighting Supes, he is going to need all the help he can get.

It would also be a great way of exposing some backstory to Bruce Wayne

    • I was thinking the same thing. If they were to include Nightwing, it would be for the fact that Batman will need help in taking on Superman.

      • That would definitely be a big enough reason for Nightwing to get back into contact with Batman too. I can just picture Superman runnin around Metropolis having two trained heroes tracking him down lmao.

  10. Sounds more and more like a Superman with friends movie.

  11. Supose this means Starfire Nightwing’s on agin off agin girlfriend won’t be there.

  12. So if the guy “reporting” can’t confirm where it’s coming from, I call that pulling it out of my butt.

With Latino Review, I can’t say I’m surprised.

ScreenRant using LR as a source is the same as saying “the lawn gnome in my yard told me” ….. I stop reading and the article loses ALL credibility. Just saying.

    • But the article is focused on the discussion question – WOULD you want to see something like that or not?

This is the best part of these movies! Whenever hard facts come to light, SOMEBODY is disappointed.

      • @Kofi – Yes, true the article is asking the question, which is fine of course. I was just pointing out how I feel about Latino Review, and they are the basis for the rumour that led to the question in the article.

I have no issues with the question, but why lower yourself to LR level?

The article is better without, I think.

        That’s all.

    • Bother to read the article Mr? It says, “SHOULD NightWing in Batman vs Superman?” Not, “CONFIRMED FROM LATINO REVIEW”. Come on, this article is for fans to say whether or not Dick Grayson should be in it and why or why not.

      • Yes I read the article. In the article, who does it mention as being the source of this question? Latino Review, who I pat no attention to, therefore I pay no attention to this article.

Did you read my post Sphynx001?? You probably should before commenting on something I say.

  13. I would personally rather see Nightwing on the small screen as a series that can tie the DC movie and TV universes together. With batman in the new MoS universe and likely moving on to the justice league later, a Nightwing TV series would be a great way to deal with the bat family and rogues gallery of this new DCU from a completely new angle. Plus I just want a whole season setting up Nightwing vs Red Hood and all of the flashbacky goodness that comes with it

    • Maybe they could use a brief film cameo by Nightwing to spin off into a TV series.

  14. Hopefully it’s an easter egg. Keep this a World’s Finest/Trinity story focusing on Supes. WW is a cameo or a minor supporting role (until there’s a real JL movie). Nightwing is name dropped or alluded to at best. I don’t want this getting too convoluted.

  15. I think that this film can potentially feature brief appearances from Nightwing and Wonder Woman, and still essentially be a Superman film aided in development by Batman. So, if done well, I would be in favor of this rumor being true.

Hopefully, Batman will not be in costume until later in the film. In that scenario, Nightwing could make an early appearance to reinforce the whole theme of Gotham.

  16. I figure if Snyder is behind it, what’s the worst that could happen?

    • The worst that can happen with any director is that the studio tries to draw in crowds by forcing too many characters into a movie with no story lines (ala Spiderman 3).

      • #1 Venom sought out a weak in spirit host, ALA Eddie Brock
#2 Sand Man was a robber who was trying to help his daughter, who then was trapped in a sand thingy majig. They had a background doofus.

      • or Wolverine: Days of Future Past

  17. I think we’re starting to forget that this technically is a Man of Steel movie.. Man of Steel 2: Batman vs Superman to be exact right?? Or did WB officially come out and say something different. Perhaps a quick nod to Grayson sure but lets not let EVERYTHING be Batman-related in this movie.

  18. I would like to see Nightwing in order to set up his own movies. Also, can somebody please confirm a villain?

  19. Man of Steel was truly a great reintroduction of the character of Superman that brings the character back to his roots and simultaneously modernize and updates the character. I agree some work was needed to improve and polish the narrative which made the film stop short of a true “homerun” as Kofi stated. The sequel is definitely in position to expand on worked with Man of Steel yet excel in areas that it was flawed in.

In terms of universe building, I am glad that filmmakers found a third alternative in establishing a cinematic universe by choosing not to create various solo films leading to team-crossover nor develop a team-up film that would lead to spinoff solo films.

The filmmakers are essentially tackling what Marvel’s Phase 2 films are supposed to do which is create solid, cohesive strong solo films while addressing the aftermath of the large-scale events of the Avengers. The characters inhabiting this universe would naturally have to respond to the events in one of the films.

Told in the context of a Man of Steel sequel makes sense in the progression of the story while it is ideal to introduce other characters, in this case Batman. I think Batman is the perfect foil and character to advance and develop the themes and storyline from Man of Steel.

However, introducing Dick Grayson or even Diana beyond a cameo or even a small role would not do well in further establishing the world and mythos of Superman. Especially that there are some people who still need to be convinced by the filmmakers, the new Superman, and the casting of Ben Affleck.

Hopefully, the story is there and improved for the cast and Snyder and co to really hit out of the park. Perhaps make Man of Steel be even better in retrospect.

  20. I would much rather seem him show up on Arrow. They’ve already name dropped Bludhaven, and the character would fit well into the current non-super powered world that has been established.

    • If they do plan on bringing Nightwing into the fold, it would be a perfect time to call JGL; he would be great for that role. Speaking of Arrow, with all the Batman universe references that are coming about, it is more than likely that either Nightwing will appear, or Batman will appear.

  21. NO. This originally started as a Man of Steel sequel and slowly feels like it’s moving more towards a new Batman movie with Superman in it. I’d love to see Nightwing as much as the next guy, but this isn’t the right movie for him to show up in.

  22. Ben is just trying to find a role for his buddy Matt Damon. :) #BourneWing

  23. I think this rumor might be a misdirect by WB to maintain buzz and take the focus off the Wonder Woman rumor which may not be a rumor. If Wonder Woman was supposed to be a surprise and everybody goes in expecting an appearance from her it’s not really a surprise any more.

  24. I think the movie is in danger of being over stuffed. I was thoroughly excited when it was just Batman facing off agains Superman. I can understand a cameo/brief intro for one other character, but not two. Batman and Superman have such a great dynamic that I really don’t want it to be overshadowed by extraneous characters. I would love to see Nightwing on the big screen, but I say save him for a Batman solo movie. Introduce Diana so she can go into a solo movie, but keep it at an introduction, not a major plot device.

    • You bring up a really good point for the Batman sequels!

  25. This is a Man of Steel sequel right?? Its dangerously turning into Spiderman 3…… I really hope not

    • How is this turning into Spiderman 3…you are crazy to use Spider-man as a reference. It was a solid movie with solid character backgrounds. Pull out your panti-wad this is just a ‘would you like to see’ article not a ‘confirmed’ thing.

  26. Sure, keep them coming, we have 2 and a half hour of screen time! We can also introduce Catwoman, Kara, Hal, Barry, Brainiac, Doomsday, Joker, Penguin, Sinestro, Barda, Ares, etc.
Mand of Steel 2 -> Superman vs Batman -> Batman vs Superman -> Batman and WonderWoman -> DC heroes meeting.
