Batman vs Superman Delayed to 2016 Batman vs. Superman Delayed to 2016; Will Go Up Against Unannounced Marvel Movie

The rumors surrounding Warner Bros.’ unofficially titled Batman vs. Superman movie have been at a fever pitch lately. Rumors (and “speculation”) ranging from a Kryptonian Wonder Woman to Denzel Washington as Lex Luthor (or Green Lantern) to Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

For clarification, the only things officially confirmed about Batman vs. Superman is that Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) will direct the film from a screenplay written by David. S Goyer (Batman Begins). Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne are reprising their roles from Man of Steel. Joining them are Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Batman vs. Superman was expected to release in the already crowded summer of 2015, but now it’s been delayed.

Today, Warner Bros. announced it would be moving the release date for their untitled Man of Steel sequel to May 6th, 2016. That’s nearly a year after its initial release date of July 17th, 2015.

Here’s the official press release:

BURBANK, CA – January 17, 2014 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film has been moved to May 6, 2016, allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story. The decision was made following the shift of the start of production to second quarter of this year. The Studio has also set a July 17, 2015, worldwide release date for its as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure. Joe Wright will direct the epic live-action film about the boy who would nevewouldr grow up, created by J.M. Barrie. The dual date announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In short, the start of production was unexpectedly delayed and pushing back the release date is to ensure the filmmakers have the time required for what will likely be a demanding shoot. Earlier today Batman-News ran a story claiming Ben Affleck had been injured on set and it was because of this production was pushed back. Deadline has since reached out to a Warner Bros. studio exec who debunked the story, saying, “We just want to do it right and need the time.”

bvs 570x294 Batman vs. Superman Delayed to 2016; Will Go Up Against Unannounced Marvel Movie

Moving Batman vs. Superman back actually does more for Joe Wright’s Pan, which, had it stayed in its original release slot of June 26th, 2015, would’ve almost certainly been crushed by FOX’s Fantastic Four and Paramount’s Terminator.

The juggling of Batman vs. Superman‘s release date changes the competition the film will face upon its release. No longer being pitted against Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman vs. Superman will now square off against FOX’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which releases the following weekend. Then, the weekend after that, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is expected in theaters.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Batman vs. Superman will go head-to-head with an as-yet-unannounced Marvel movie. After all, that May weekend has been staked out by Marvel for years. Without an Iron Man or Avengers movie in that slot, will Marvel blink and change the date of their unannounced film? Time will tell.

What do you think about the delay, Screen Ranters? Are you disappointed that you won’t be able to see Batfleck for another year? What Marvel movie do you think will go up against Batman vs. Superman? Let us know in the comments.

  1. This will been a long ass wait for this movie. DC why did you have to delay this movie to 2016. Now I have to wait more than two years to see BvS arrgh!

  2. It sucks we will have to wait an extra year but it’s all good they need to take their time and get everything settled.

  3. I think this is the first prudent step they have taken so far. I know that everyone wants to see the two big titans (Marvel and DC) compete but honestly, I grew up on Superman, Batman and the X-Men. I was never a fan of the Avengers until the movies. Marvel’s keystroke was setting the precedent. But, DC still has two things that Marvel does not, or at least has not shown, DC has the two biggest comic book icons in history. Not only that but the Big Blue Boy-scout and the Dark Knight have a relationship that no two of the Avengers have. They form the greatest clique in Comic book history. And that’s the true heart of the Justice League. That’s the foundation. The Avengers are formed by the government (more or less) in the movie. The Justice League will form itself. The other asset DC has in it’s arsenal that it almost seems to not fully realize is in the third part of this Superhero trinity: Wonder Woman. You want an advantage DCCU? Look no further than WW. RIght now, up to this point she has no equal in the MCU. I’m sorry Black Widow, but you’re just not. Give her a real chance to shine, and then give us this relationship of three superheroes who become friends and Marvel’s boys club won’t be able to compete with it. and for goodness sake, TAKE YOUR TIME! You’re doing yourselves, these characters, and the fans no favors by rushing and looking desperate. Just make it happen. When you’re setting the precedent you have all the time in the world. But now, it’s time to show the greatest friendship in comic book history. And DC has that!

    • +100000000

    • Agree !! Well said. The Avengers while good are nowhere near the iconic stature of Superman and Batman. DC is sitting on a pile of tremendous potential. They just need to figure out a good gameplan and execute it well.

    • Ms. Marvel, Valkyrie, Freya, Sif, the Goddess, Hela, Enchantress, Jean Grey as Phoenix, Titania, Valkyrie, She Hulk, all more powerful than Wonder woman, not to mention cosmic heavy hitters like, Malevolence, Umar, Asteroth, Gaea, Mistress Love, Death, Saturnyne, Infinity, and Nemesis. Could also argue that both the Invisible Woman and Scarlet Witch are more powerful due to their respective powers. Rogue, Emma Frost, Polaris, Serci, Medusa, Gamora, Volcana, and Thundra would give her a good fight as well.

      • Yeah, but none of them are house hold iconic characters….. Maybe Jean Grey, Sue and She Hawk, but WW is THE female super hero. So far Marvel has not introduced a female character in their cinematic universe that even comes close to her.

        • Marvel proved however that they can take a C list hero like Iron Man and turn him into a name that brings the 5th biggest box office gross all on his own. DC has shown they can take one of their B-Listers (Green Lantern) and miss the target by so much that the franchise was dead on arrival. Thus far Marvel and Fox are the only studios that are showing they are crafting a fruitful shared universe. Sony is showing they’ve got guts announcing a Sinister Six flick, but the writers have admitted on several occasions they’re just making it up as they go along.

          • Disney has turned ONE B lister into a big name, which he has been for all of 6 years now. Call me when he is still huge in 50 more years. And even Iron Man was 10 times more well known than ANY Marvel female superhero.

Ms. Marvel? Don’t make me laugh. I’ll be honest, I don’t like Wonder Woman, but there is no denying that only she (and maybe Catwoman a little) has any real worldwide recognition.

            • I’d add Supergirl to that list, perhaps, and agree Ms. Marvel isn’t a household name though Jean’s Phoenix probably is. You are correct that DC wins out with the female popularity, but give Ms. Marvel a solo film and that could change things. Marvel would be better suited to have a female X-man member shine, unfortunately they can’t, so yeas, DC wins that bout. Also, Iron Man is not a C lister, if anything he’s a B+ damn near A-. He is a founding member of the Avengers and has been on the team since it’s inception, and his solo series has been running for nearly 50 years without any cancellations. He is certainly more of a name than say, Daredevil, Ghostrider, and Blade, and Blade is a D to F lister, but the films really sparked the whole comic book movie craze, for Marvel at least.

              • Cast someone sexy to play Psylocke and all bets are off, shes the hottest female character ever…

      • Response to this post from the general public:

        “Who?”

So I whisper in their ear: “they’re like Wonder Woman.”

        General public response:

        “Oh, ok.”

And now you get the dudes point.

  4. Take your time and get it right, you’ll have fanboy appreciation for the rest of your lives.

This movie is gonna be so epic!!!

  5. Really who gives a turd, as long as the movie comes out and is awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing these three characters on the silver screen together.

    • Well you know today’s instant gratification culture. It’s spilled over into other areas of life. People are used to being able to get anything instantaneously, so now they want a movie they’re looking forward to as soon as possible, even though ‘more time’ means ‘better movie.’

      • Let’s HOPE that more time means a better movie! I’m really hoping now that DC and WB have almost another extra year to work on this movie, that they really get it right and come up with the most awesome CBM ever made. They have their work cut out for them, but hopefully this delay is a good thing.

  6. Well, sometimes it does not pay to be a greedy-guts. If more time to get it done right is what is needed, then I would back the decision. Sometimes good things come to he who waits, and good things are worth waiting for. A well-thought out strategy is usually the best one.

I do hope the Green Lantern used is Hal Jordan, if he is in this one, as well as Hal Jordan for the JLA movie (at least the first one).

  7. sucks, i just don’t want this to outshine a possible Black Panther

  8. BvS comes out in 2015?! They’re rushing it!
It’s moved to 2016?! LOL WB/DC ARE SCARED! – internet logic. ugh.

    • Truer words were never spoken.

      2015? They’re rushing for a cash grab!
2016? They’re scared of the Avengers!

Only Batman and Superman? That’s all WB ever does is Bats and Supes!
Add Wonder Woman? This movie is way too crowded!

Goyer writing the script? Goyer is only good when somebody is looking over his shoulder!
Hire a Oscar winning writer to look over his shoulder? This film is doomed, bringing somebody in this late (pre-production?) is never good!

Batman vs Superman? Batman would get killed, he can’t fight Superman!
Rumor about Drones (ala Kingdom Come)? I want to see a straight up fight, they are just copying Iron Man 3!

Many people seem way overly harsh about this flick. More so than any others.
Worst part of it is it has started making me be more critical of Disney/Marvel movies. I think that what Disny/Marvel did was excellent. I love that everybody is trying to follow suit now. Shoot, Sony is going to try and build a cinematic universe out of one character. F***ing excellent. The Avengers did that. Plain and simple, and because of this I am also going to get to see the Justice League and more X-Men (with Fantastic Four AND X-Force) Yay me!

But their films get way more credit than they deserve online. IMO They have made one true classic (Iron Man) and one super blockbuster game changer (Avengers) and that’s it. Everything else has been good to average but nothing I watch again very often, if at all. I bought the IM3 Blu-Ray for the sole purpose of having all of them, I haven’t even watched it. I would STILL watch Iron Man over any other flick they have made.

  9. I don’t want to wait for the Mos2, but I’d rather wait and see an epic film than see some rushed crap. I want to see Superman and Batman friendship develop. Like @the dude stated above their friendship is the foundation of the Justice League.

I hope that marvel movie in that 2016 spot is not the Black Panther because it will get crushed no matter what it is Dr. Strange or whatever, and now that there’s no competition for 2015 I still think Antman will flop, now they just don’t have an excuse anymore.

    • DC better have something good up their sleeve if they are going up against Marvel head-on with Ben Affleck as Batman… I like Ben, I do. But he is no Christian Bale, and that might be all that really matters. Now if DC got Bale to step back in… Marvel might just have to go on and reschedule.

      • I don’t know, after Dark Knight Rises I’m tired of seeing Christian Bale’s smoker voice Batman on the big screen. Now granted Ben Affleck might not be any better but it won’t matter if the movie is still good.

      • Please no.
I want the REAL Batman in the movie.

If that is the ONLY thing I get from this movie, I will be happy.
True comic book Batman. In all of his shadowy white eyed glory.

I don’t care if Bale plays him. I don’t care if Affleck plays him. I don’t care if they call Clooney back to play him. If he is presented right, it won’t matter.

    • There really is no “COMPETITION” … as most people will probably just go see both movies.

      • I’m probably going to just see MOS2,it depends on what the other Marvel movie is about.

  10. When it comes to Black Panther, I hope Marvel makes a cult classic that also tackles colonization / racism instead of a typical Disney Blockbuster. I’d rather Thor 3 go head to head with BVS

    • If Thor 3 goes up against Batman vs Superman they had better pull out The Enchantress, The Executioner, Surtur, and Beta Ray Bill if they even want to think about competing with that movie.

      • According to the writer and others, Surtur and Muspelheim would be the route they’re taking for Thor 3′s story. Whether or not they include the Enchantress/Executioner team, or Beta Ray Bill, is unknown. I’m looking forward to it but also Batman vs. Superman and GotG.

  11. This delay is another demonstration that WB has no master plan, they don’t know where to go or how to get there, and they’re just fumbling along as they go. Superman Lives, Superman Flyby, Superman Reborn, Superman Returns, Justice League with different actors, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman tv show that was filmed and then dropped, MOS sequel, the Wonder Woman tv show Amazon, and now Superman/Batman is delayed a year.

All while there are no announcements of ANY other DC movies, and there are no elements of a larger shared universe other than a tiny easter egg in MOS. Don’t forget that in all the early interviews with Zack Snyder and WB they said that MOS was in its own universe and not connected to anything, it wasn’t until after the success of Avengers that they said otherwise. WB still hasn’t even said they’re making a Justice League movie, there’s been zero official announcement about it.

They don’t understand their fans, they don’t understand their characters, they don’t believe in the DC universe, and they don’t have a plan.

    • It has been said that they are filming MOS2 and Justice League back to back. That’s why all the casting rumors.

    • +10,0000,0000

WB/DC isn’t as prepared, or intelligent as Marvel/Disney. Just take a look at how many awesome movies are coming out by Disney, and compare that to WB. They never wanted a shared universe, with standalone movies because it’s too risky. They don’t have the ‘know-how’ or the decision-making skills to make a Justice League movie as good as The Avengers. They don’t have that build-up, and interconnected universe. As far as I know, BvS is just another ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ or ‘Alien vs. Predator’ flick that’s only a money grab. DC comics maybe better in my opinion, but they will NEVER in a million years uptake Marvel in it’s shared movie universe.

  12. I heard it got postponed due to Affleck breaking his leg. Is that true or are they just trying to get the right story/script done?

    • Probably both since it was suppose to start filming next month and they still haven’t announced who they cast as Lex Luthor or other roles.

If they are tweaking scripts I will gladly wait,if it makes a epic movie.

  13. For those saying WB is moving BvS because they are afraid of Marvel or even that Marvel will smoke them in the new 5/6/16 release date – you are insane. I’m a huge Marvel fan but I’ll say it right out the gate: MDJ is bigger than Marvel and unless it’s a MDJ movie on 5/6/16 the Marvel movie is best suited to move.

Just tired of these so called ‘Marvel fans’ talking like every movie is the be all. Any Marvel movie without MDJ has not blown any box office out of the water. In fact, you can say the movies without MDJ underachieved at the box office.

At least WB, Sony & Fox have had big hits without a media darling (MDJ) being the chic fad. Don’t get me wrong, I love Marvel but without MDJ, Marvel would average 400 M worldwide per movie tops. The general population of sheep like him as an ACTOR; it’s not the superhero they are paying to see. That is not a good thing when his luster wears off.

    • WHO THE F**K IS MDJ?

You say your a Marvel fan but you DONT KNOW THE INITIALS OF THEIR BIGGEST STAR….SMH

    • Do you mean RDJ?

  14. I think they might have been rushing it. Anything that Zack Snyder does he takes his time dong it to make sure its exactly the way he envisioned it happening. Zack is a great director and he know the way a superhero movie should be made with lots of details to make it come out as close to the original source as possible. A lot of people here have bad mouths hi, but when he I watchmen, he set the bar high. The only thing he had to make different from the series was the ending. MOS2 is going to be the film any DC fan as been wanting to see. Its worth the wait.

    • Watchmen was terrible. The most boring CBM ever made. Not a fan of Snyder. All his movies look the same and rely too much on slow motion visuals. He’s a one trick pony.

      • Watchmen was awesome. Interesting story and great cinematic visuals. One of my favorites from the last 10 years. Not my favorite comic movie, but the visual style gave me an indication of how a Justice League type of movie could come off on the silver screen.

  15. It could be pushed to 2020 and we’d still anticipate this film.

  16. Marvel will def move, without an Iron Man or Avengers movie to go head to head they will be beaten.

Honestly even if it was an Iron Man 4 it would be stupid to go head to head on the same day, its also not right for the fans.

Simply pushing one back a week will let each movie have its big weekend and also allows fans to see both rather than trying to see two movies in one weekend.

  17. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I’m so impatient when it comes to movies. Especially ones about Superman!

  18. This is great news its nice to see that they are going to take their time making this film and also a smart business move.the movie is going to do well at the box office no doubt but it wouldnt reach its full potential going up against avengers 2 which is a well established franchise.

  19. Strangely.. Superman against Batman in the comic book that I noticed. How did Batman survived ? Batman is not superhuman. Superman is superhuman and he can break Batman or even killed him. I am not sure I understand how it works. Sorry about my English.

    • Batman is vastly more intelligent than Superman. He’s the world greatest detective, and figures out things a lot faster than any DC character. He doesn’t need any superpowers, because his brain is a superpower that is greater than any muscle power.

      • vastly? No. Superman is, in his own right quite intelligent, with the database of Krypton at his disposal (at least in the comics). What Batman has however is years of experience, a diverse skill set AND a driven if not somewhat paranoid compulsion to have a contingency plan for everything. He is also very cunning and street savvy.

The other thing working against Supes is his unwillingness to “break or kill”, especially a good guy. He always keeps his powers in check because he is afraid of what will happen if he does let go and use his full powers.

        • @juz.. I understand that but it doesnt answer my question bout superman’s strength and human’s strength. Batman is a human being and is no match to Superman anyway.

Yeah, it does made a sense but when superman punch batman.. Batman would surely passed out and fall down and Superman would win anyway. I know that it is just comic and maybe doesnt make a sense because of Superman and Batman are different. I dont know. I am still not satisfied with the answer, I guess. LOL.

          • I think Batman needs to have some form of supernatural ability. We’ve seen him separate his spirit from his body, kick down trees & jump several storeys from a building without an procuring any injuries. So in a way he is ‘Superhuman’. That together with his combat ability & his skills in devising a combat strategy is more than enough to take Supes down.

            • If you believe that then you’ve missed the point of who Batman is and what he represents entirely.

    • Go buy the graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns”

  20. Better delayed then cancelled.

  21. I can’t believe all the shocked and disappointed people.

Everyone needs to look at today’s date……it’s mid Jan 2014…..to meet their initial projected date would mean, even if they started shooting tomorrow, they would have less than 1.5 years and that’s if they started shooting now which they are obviously not ready to do. Hell they are still doing script polishing and hiring cast! Movies of this caliber on average take about 2 years to bring to fruition, so unless you want them to rush everything and have it all be bad, they are wisely pushing it back. It has zero to do with what movie they will be going up against.

The only negative I will say is, WB/DC have been dragging their heels on finalizing a script and getting the cast together. They should have been working on this all BEFORE MoS hit theaters and had it ready to go if Superman did well enough to warrant a sequel. Their plodding attitude and indecisiveness about a direction is going to cost them.

  22. I’d say make Geoff Johns and Mark Waid part of the screenwriting team of this Batman vs Superman movie and for the Justice League movie next.Imagine a “Kingdom Come”-type Justice League movie.. that would be ridiculously epic.

  23. I`m up for it, I thought they were rushing for the cash. Its better to wait and be well made than to rush and make a mess

  24. This a opportunity for a bunch of dc character to be introduced especially enough time for them to fix green lantern if they wanted to or come out with a flash movie or another dc character movie! NOT ANOTHER TV SHOW! I also think they should connect green arrow with the dc movie universe! It’s a big waste of money to make a tv show that’s not going to connect with a movie! This is such a good idea to make the dc universe solid in my case! – Ben

    • I know right.

That is why NCIS never did very well, because it doesn’t connect to a movie. Why did they waste all that money?

  25. Only one thing, WB you suck!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. The Superman/Batman “Public Enemies” animated DVD movie is a good example of how Bats and Supes can work in a feature film.

  27. I know fans are disappointed, but everyone should take a moment and take a deep breath and think it through. This film was going to have less than 15 months to complete a bunch of major casting, finish all pre-production and final location scouting and rewrites, complete all principal photography, complete all post-production and effects work, and stage a big multi-month marketing campaign. It was going to have to compete against “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” for the summer, and needed to make 100% certain to get everything right and be fully prepared to start a major marketing blitz on time. There were already rumblings of concern that they were rushing the project in order to try to hurry development of the broader DCU on film, too.

The delay means that they will now have much longer to fully flesh out not just this one film’s plans but also their entire broader plans for the DCU on film — because this film is helping launch the bigger DCU of superheroes. If they still had to do all of the above stuff for this film plus finalize all of their longer-term plans for their future DCU movies etc, would you feel confident that fans would get the best DC cinematic films and universe possible? Would this film and the subsequent films be as great as we want them to be and as they could be with enough time and thought put into them?

The creative team of Snyder, Goyer, Affleck, and Terrio is a pretty damn solid set of creative talents — including two Oscar-winning screenwriters (Affleck and Terrio), two great directors (Snyder and Affleck), and two of the best superhero filmmakers working in the business (Snyder and Goyer). Affleck and Terrio clearly came in and gave new ideas and input into this project and the future of the DCU on film, and the decision was made to delay the release in order to do rewrites and take more time to make absolutely certain they get this film 100% right and make it as good as it can possibly be. That’s something fans should be happy to hear, it means we’ll get a much better film.

Everything is riding on this film for the future of the DCU on film. This film HAS to get it right, for the JL to work. And what we’re seeing now is a serious commitment to take the time to get it right and not rush into it too fast to try and cash in quickly.

So while I get that fans have waited so long and are so excited to hurry and see this film, remember that it’s more important to do it right than to do it fast, and that this is a sign that the major creative talents involved decided that the film as it stood wasn’t really where it needed to be yet as a project in order to be everything it could possibly be to make everyone happy.

  28. As much as i hate having to wait another year, I’m actually happy that they have to decided to not rush things. This means we will be getting a much better movie and great plans for the DCCU.

  29. I second the idea of getting Geoff Johns on the creative screen writing team. ut if that were to happen, the could take an already tried and true story of Blackest night” into a justice league movie. Then that could go thu into another movie. I know its wishful thinking, but its also solid thinking. And if the studios don’t want to make a multi picture storyline like Blackest night, then the next perfect story should be identity Crisis. The perfect vehicle to show case the other members on the team.
