Batman vs Superman Delayed to 2016 Batman vs. Superman Delayed to 2016; Will Go Up Against Unannounced Marvel Movie

The rumors surrounding Warner Bros.’ unofficially titled Batman vs. Superman movie have been at a fever pitch lately. Rumors (and “speculation”) ranging from a Kryptonian Wonder Woman to Denzel Washington as Lex Luthor (or Green Lantern) to Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

For clarification, the only things officially confirmed about Batman vs. Superman is that Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) will direct the film from a screenplay written by David. S Goyer (Batman Begins). Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne are reprising their roles from Man of Steel. Joining them are Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Batman vs. Superman was expected to release in the already crowded summer of 2015, but now it’s been delayed.

Today, Warner Bros. announced it would be moving the release date for their untitled Man of Steel sequel to May 6th, 2016. That’s nearly a year after its initial release date of July 17th, 2015.

Here’s the official press release:

BURBANK, CA – January 17, 2014 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film has been moved to May 6, 2016, allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story. The decision was made following the shift of the start of production to second quarter of this year. The Studio has also set a July 17, 2015, worldwide release date for its as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure. Joe Wright will direct the epic live-action film about the boy who would nevewouldr grow up, created by J.M. Barrie. The dual date announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In short, the start of production was unexpectedly delayed and pushing back the release date is to ensure the filmmakers have the time required for what will likely be a demanding shoot. Earlier today Batman-News ran a story claiming Ben Affleck had been injured on set and it was because of this production was pushed back. Deadline has since reached out to a Warner Bros. studio exec who debunked the story, saying, “We just want to do it right and need the time.”

Moving Batman vs. Superman back actually does more for Joe Wright’s Pan, which, had it stayed in its original release slot of June 26th, 2015, would’ve almost certainly been crushed by FOX’s Fantastic Four and Paramount’s Terminator.

The juggling of Batman vs. Superman‘s release date changes the competition the film will face upon its release. No longer being pitted against Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman vs. Superman will now square off against FOX’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which releases the following weekend. Then, the weekend after that, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is expected in theaters.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Batman vs. Superman will go head-to-head with an as-yet-unannounced Marvel movie. After all, that May weekend has been staked out by Marvel for years. Without an Iron Man or Avengers movie in that slot, will Marvel blink and change the date of their unannounced film? Time will tell.

What do you think about the delay, Screen Ranters? Are you disappointed that you won’t be able to see Batfleck for another year? What Marvel movie do you think will go up against Batman vs. Superman? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I am disappoint.
My question is, is it being pushed back to turn it into a justice league movie or more jl oriented.

    • I think they are going to make Superman vs. Batman and Justice League at the same time, shooting one after the other. They have a new writer who was going to rewrite the script for SVB, but who knows, maybe they decided to start from scratch and write SVB and Justice League back to back and have a story that flows smoothly from one to the other. I don’t think they are going to change anything about Superman vs. Batman. It’s still going to be a Superman movie and it’s going to kick off something great. With all of the rumors about Green Lantern, Doomsday, Aquaman, Cyborg, etc. it just makes more sense.

    • Probably. They most like are trying to take a step back and ask themselves what movie are we making

    • Possibly separate ones.

  2. I don’t know if Marvel WILL blink but they should. They have nothing, without IM or Avengers, that could begin to compete with BvsS or Justice League, which I believe it WILL end up being called.

    • Does it really matter? They already have a firmly secured film universe. Plus they’ve beat DC movies thrice already in the same years (2011- Thor, CA:TFA > GL, 2012- Avengers> TDKR, 2013- IM3> MOS) financially at least. Will people stop watching Marvel movies if DC/WB manages to top their 2016 film in the box office? Nope.

      • My point was that it would be in Marvel’s best interest to move their date. I thought that was pretty clear. Why take a chance with a probable new Marvel property launching to get beat at the box office by DC/WB? Both movie companies suffer. I would be shocked if there wasn’t some back room talks about this between the two studios.

  3. Man Of Steel 2: Tokyo Drift

    • Superman: The Desolation of Batman.

      • Superman: Age of Delay

    • Man of Steel 2: Batman Boogaloo

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • dramatic much?

  5. first MOS movie was delayed also. good going WB, put out a press release talking down to us. just stop with the big words, ” fully realize their vision “.

    • marvel would have wanted to start off the summer with a big established property,
thor 3 would probably have been released on may 6 2016, not anymore
i think marvel would have released dr. strange on July 8, 2016: their other release date for the year

    • I keep reading this but have yet to see anybody explain WHY they think WB is scared of a movie that releases a month and a half before theirs?

I don’t see what you think there was to be scared of?

      • It’s internet logic bud, internet logic!

        • Good point.

    • Why exactly would they be scared of a movie scheduled for release 2 1/2 months prior? Neither would have had an affect on one or the other. I’m pretty sure it had absolutely NOTHING to do with Avengers.

  6. I am so bummed. How am I supposed to go two years with no live action DC movies? Oh well, hopefully this will give them time to work things out and get well Ben Affleck.

  7. I’ve already brunt myself out on other articles, but after rantiing I have to come to realize it’s only bad because we have to wait, it’s good because WB has more time to really get the movie they want on the big screen and if they were willing to delay the entire project that has this much going for it they care about it, so before we rant think about how good this is for the movie.

    • I CAN’T WAIT THAT LONG! I’m very dissapointed!

    • Yeah, 2015′s already kicked out a few other planned movies.
But hey, if WB wants to work on the film longer to make it better, I won’t complain…much. :P
I’m only bummed because 1) It is a longer wait, and 2) It would have so entertaining to see it going up against Avengers:AoU and enjoy the endless fan flame wars… XD

  8. Ahhhhh damn…..

  9. W.E the reason for this delay 10month just seems rather exessive to me, I know people will say its good they are takeing there time but prodcution has been going on for a while now and for them to say they need 10months is a bit of a p*ss take.

  10. Little dissapointed, I have faith that the movie will be much better the more time and hard work put into it. For me personally, this is the most anticipated movie EVER.

  11. Marvel should get outta there. Unless the unamed movie is ironman 4

    • I can’t believe they just dropped it on that exact day, hilarious! I’m betting WB is expecting Marvel to move whatever that movie is if anything lol.

    • marvel wouldn’t dare compete against Batman vs Superman no matter what the movie is
and RDJ isn’t contracted for IM4 which means IM4 will come out after avengers 3

  12. Team7? lobo? Booster gold? SOMETHING IN 2015

    • They are also filming 2 movies back to back. Both will be epic!

      • yea they’re going lord of the rings style filming their movies one after another

  13. It would be nice if WB were using this time to work on multiple pictures, like perhaps if the rumours of back-to-back shoots are true we could see BvS in May 2016, then Justice League Oct/Nov 2016, Wonder Woman (or Flash/GL/Aquaman) May/June 2017 etc. WB could take the time and really made this universe into a product that is fully unified and film as much as possible at once to keep a nice bit of continuity with stories and look.

    • justice league: July 14 2016?

  14. This thing is never gonna get made. It’s “The Curse of Wonder Woman”. Just like that Justice League thing with Megan Gale that never got done.

  15. Winners in this situation – Marvel’s 2015 slate, especially Ant-Man. Would have been overlooked coming out 2 weeks after Batman vs. Superman, now it can shine. Gal Gadot is another winner; gives her even more time to get toned and whatnot.

The big loser here is obviously the fans. This was going to be a lot of people’s most anticipated film of 2015 if Star Wars wasn’t. We’ll get through this, fanboys.

As for going head to head with Marvel on May 6, 2016. Marvel should move the date if it’s an unknown property like The Inhumans, but stay if it’s a sequel like Thor 3 or Captain America 3.

    • I don’t know man, whether it’s Iron Man 4, Thor 3 or Captain America 3, it’s not good for either film. Batman Vs. Superman and Marvel’s film will hurt each other so my bet is Marvel will move their release date entirely no matter which movie they’ve got under their sleeve. Obviously BVS will do the most damage to the other other but not without taking some, I’d rather they both do well.

      • marvel wouldn’t dare compete against Batman vs Superman no matter what the movie is
and RDJ isn’t contracted for IM4 which means IM4 will come out after avengers 3

      • Stop stanning.

  16. xmen: apocalypse isn’t release the “following weekend” it is released 3 weeks after Batman vs Superman
lol guess marvel will just have to give in to Batman vs Superman, no way in hell that marvel will be sticking to their may 6 release date now

    • Not even if Avengers 3 was coming out in 2016.
Whether it would win the weekend or not doesn’t matter, money would be lost, plain and simple.

    • I was going to post the same thing about X-Men.

      So the agenda would be:

      X-Men: Apocalypse 3 weeks later
      Amazing Spiderman 2 week later

      It will two CRAZY months

  18. WB Is scared of again by Marvel, Yep way to go WB!! They cant get out of their own way anymore…I have COMPLETELY lost faith in WB/DC! I hate to say it but they will NEVER compete with Marvel!

I honestly believed they were going to challenge A-AoU but ALAS, what a charade at comic-con… THEY ARE SHAKING IN THEIR BAT-BOOTS, letting fans down AGAIN!

    • Please.

I am not happy about this news, but if you think they did it because they are scared of Marvel you missed the part where they staked out marvels favorite weekend (reserved for their biggest movie every year) in 2016.

You think they did it because they were scared of A2 which releases a month and a half earlier? Get real.

    • I think its close to a year or nothing. What were they going to do, delay it four months and release it in October? They want this movie in the summer movie blitz.

My guess is they maybe want to steal Marvels May 6th slot. Which is smart I guess, most real comp doesn’t come out until two or three weeks later. Like in 2016 when the next big movie isn’t slated until X-men Apocalypse three weeks later.

  19. This is good! I do want both movies to do good, but id rather have AoU do better. I hope its against either Doctor Strange or Inhumans. Dont doom Black Panther and have that be its release date!

    • marvel wouldn’t dare compete against Batman vs Superman no matter what the movie is

  20. What sucks is that we are going to go through 2 FULL phases of MARVEL films before one Justice League movie or anything that resembles a shared universe. Its too late in the game to be making mistakes like this. I believe the delay will be worth it the end but C’MON!!!!

  21. Ruh roh!

  22. I may be forced to join the “WB doesn’t know how to use the DC properties” crowd here shortly.

Content. If Marvel Studios has proven anything it is that fans want, and will support, content. Here I am wondering what OTHER movies they might make beyond 2015 and now there wont even be one in 2015. Now at best any NEXT installment will be in 2017. Three f***ing years from now. And from what I am seeing and have seen, I am inclined to believe there will be no other movies even getting a green light until they see how this one does. Which means I can look forward to a full out Justice League sometime around 2025. FU WB.

    • I get you.

Marvel proved that a studio can support many movies in a short period of time, like 3-4 years. They all worked fine, and payed the way to Avengers, and the three big characters have gotten sequels.

But what is Warner doing?: Not releasing ANYTHING between Man of Steel and the sequel.

They are WASTING the possibilities, with two full empty years.

      • Warner is releasing different movies anyway. Superhero movie or not they’ll still have money for bread n butter.
At this point they understand that no matter what that movie must be good. They set a class with superhero movies and they want to make it again.
Its a far better plan than rushing anything. Besides, its not like Disney did exceptional work with their fast food method. Iron Man 1 – the only really good movie on their part, Avengers is just hype that doesn’t hold up when you listen to non fanboys opinions or watch movie more than once, Captain America – was nice but thats about it, other movies were complete disaster from quality perspective. And they lowered the bar so much with Thor 2 that for a brief moment i simply lost all hope for Captain 2.

    • @ Dragonarcher

Welcome to the club Dragon. DC doesn’t have a clue what they are doing, or how to use their properties.

WB/DC doesn’t know what they are doing, period.

      • +1

  23. I’m disappointed, but I think it is for the best! If you remember, MoS had nearly one year and a half for post production alone! We are one year and a half from the now old release date and principal photography hasn’t even started. So in the end, it’s a win situation for anyone that wants/demands a quality movie.
As stated above, I had the same thought when I first read the headline. Will they now make it a JLA movie, instead? In one hand I hope so, because I really want a JLA movie, but in another I hope not, simply because a BvS movie would be epic. But I really want, is a great movie.

  24. I knew it that one of the top three anticipated movies is going to 2016.
my thought was on STAR WARS VII..
but I did not see this coming..

    May 6 2016 i am coming…

  25. I cannot say that I am surprised. That is what WB does best. Delaying DC movies. If those people were smart, they would have realized a long time ago that they could make a living out of DC characters alone and not have to bother with other movies but hey that is why I am not in this business right? Anyway, Marvel still has the edge unfortunately :( #DChardcorefan

    • Well in the grand scheme of things, WB is the top grossing production company in the biz so despite any perceive ineptitude in regards to their DC properties they’re actually quite formidable with or without a thriving cinematic DCU. So methinks smart money would be to continue bothering with those other movies. Thriving cinematic DCU would just make them even more dominant.

  26. Hard to say I am not disappointment but I am glad to hear its not due to an injury suffered by Ben Affleck.

If the studio -and perhaps filmmakers- decided the film needs more time, then so be it.
Many of us, even the most optimistic, feared that due to many of the rumors and “speculation” that the project may feel rushed from time to time. I don’t think its quite a sign of trouble or no advancement being made, as what it appears on the Star Wars front.

Perhaps WB/DC and the filmmakers want to make sure how the film will set up a larger universe and plan ahead firmly.
Perhaps Terrio’s rewrite may be more than just “polishing up”.

Perhaps its not fear of failure that is driving this decision, but rather the motivation to maximize realized potential.
