In the next section of their report, JoBlo talks about some finer details rumored to be a part of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, such as:
- Batman’s motivation
- Lex Luthor’s motivation
- Possible other villains
- Details on Wayne Manor and the Batcave
The New Batman
First of all: The Batman. Apparently Ben Affleck’s Batman is a veteran crime-fighter (as we’ve heard many times) who will do what’s necessary to get the job done. (Sounds like the sort of Justice League animated series Batman we wanted to see!) His friction with Superman is said to come from the fact that Superman is a willing follower, whereas Batman does what he wants in more independent, vigilante style (the sort of thing that was a focus of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns – a known inspiration for BvS).
As for home base: It’s said that while Wayne Manor exists, Bruce Wayne actually lives elsewhere on the property in a modern cottage, with access to the Batcave underneath. Vehicles are said to include the new Batmobile and also a new version of the Batwing.
The New Lex Luthor
Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor has been something of a mystery – a baffling one, in the minds of many fans. Lex rumors have been coming out steadily in recent months, pointing to a depiction of the character as basically being an evil version of Mark Zuckerberg from The Social Network. With a cutting edge company and billions of dollars behind him, Lex (who sports red hair – at the start of the film, at least) is said to consider himself the peak of humanity, and god’s gift to mankind. That slightly inflated ego is understandably punctured by the revelation of Superman, who is far beyond what humanity can be.
It’s said that what many figured early on will turn out to be true: Lex will try to paint Superman as the ultimate threat to humanity, and rally people to his side. This would put Superman in a hard position where his all his vaunted powers could end up doing him more harm (in the court of public opinion) than good. It also creates an interesting dynamic in which Batman’s skills as a rogue tactician makes him an asset to Superman, able to help the Man of Steel outwit Lex, rather than overpower him.
Other Possible Villains
More interesting is the brief mention in the report of a secondary villain that requires Superman, Batman AND Wonder Woman’s combined efforts. Late last year there were rumors swirling that Superman’s nemesis Doomsday was in Batman V Superman – and as far as we’re concerned, that could still be true.
JoBlo points to a villain created or controlled by Lex Luthor – a villain that requires three DC superheroes to bring him or her down. If not the unstoppable force of Doomsday, our next bet would be Lex creating something like Bizarro, or Parasite, Atomic Skull or Metallo – all villains who could conceivably crawl out of a LexCorp lab and be formidable in their own right.
The Bizarro angle plays well as a way for Lex to demonstrate the destructive power of “Superman” (even utilizing Kal-El’s DNA to do so); the Doomsday angle would work if Lex wanted to create something that could actually kill the Man of Steel (and thereby demonstrate Lex’s superior mind winning over Superman’s brawn). We’re interested to see which way the filmmakers go.
Hopefully a lot of this will be confirmed at Comic-Con 2014. Stay tuned for our coverage of that, July 24th – 27th.
