We’re almost there. In less than two weeks’ time, the long-awaited follow up to Warner Bros. and DC’s 2013 film Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in theaters. Zack Snyder’s film has a lot of ground to cover, as it expands and builds on the DC Extended Universe introduced in his 2013 Superman reboot, presents a new Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), while setting the stage for the eventual DC superhero all-star jam, Justice League.
According to most early accounts, Batman V Superman accomplishes all of the above, and the new Caped Crusader Ben Affleck says he’s “proud & relaxed” heading into the premiere. The movie is on track for a huge opening weekend, and as is par for the course with any big modern blockbuster release, the marketing push has been strong and near-constant.
While the film’s full-length trailers have received mixed reactions from fans — who mostly worry that the third trailer gave away too much of the plot — the stream of Batman V Superman TV spots have generally featured variations on the same re-packaged footage from the trailers. Some exceptions have included the clever Turkish Airlines Super Bowl ads, and a pair of new Brazilian spots for Jeep. Take a look at the first one above (via CBM), and then this one:
The ads use the destruction of Metropolis wrought from Superman’s battle with General Zod at the end of Man of Steel to hawk the Jeep Renegade, intercutting shots of the vehicle navigating scenes of urban destruction with different views of the Metropolis fallout. The first spot gives us a taste of the now-familiar scene of the power-suited Batman fighting Superman, and both feature a bird’s-eye show of a Kryptonian ship plowing through a few skyscrapers.
We’ve known since the early trailers that Batman V Superman will explore how Superman is held accountable by Batman for the destruction of Metropolis, and these spots give us some new glimpses of this perspective. The overhead shot of the spacecraft is one of the more dynamic images from these spots, and might offer an idea of how the different point of view of the final battle of Man of Steel will be presented.
The catastrophic ripple effect of the final act of Man of Steel is at the core of Batman and Superman’s conflict, and understanding how the horror of that battle continues to scar the citizens of Metropolis and Gotham City will depend on seeing things from a new point of view. The footage in these spots is an example of this different perspective.
