As moviegoers roll into the final releases of 2015, all eyes are on J.J. Abrams’ continuation of Star Wars in Episode 7: The Force Awakens. It might be hard to imagine anything more hyped than a return to the Galaxy Far, Far Away, but 2016 will also be packed full of major releases that could take a run at the records Star Wars breaks this December. In addition to a new Harry Potter universe movie, the first Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, and a return to the Ghostbusters franchise, 2016 will start off hot with the release of both Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Time and reception will tell whether either film can overtake The Force Awakens but there’s no doubt that both films are primed to be the biggest releases that Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment have seen, respectively.
This week, fans were treated to their first official look at Captain America 3 in the Civil War teaser and now, one week later, Warner Bros. is following suit – releasing the third full-length trailer for their Batman V Superman movie.
Teased during the mid-season 2 finale of Gotham, the full trailer debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! – before dropping online for all to see. Today’s trailer includes entirely new footage with only a brief shot from the preview on FOX’s Gotham City TV series. As with prior BvS trailers, the new Dawn of Justice preview still focuses heavily on Man of Steel aftermath – as well as the debate between pro-Superman supporters and those who believe the Kryptonian is actually a threat (Bruce Wayne included).
Understandably, the Batman V Superman marketing is, for now, milking the title fight: Batman vs. Superman – but the new trailer holds little back. To that end, trailer #3 maintains Warner Bros.’ general approach to Batman V Superman advertising – showcasing iconic heroes, bat-gadgets, and villains. Viewers know “The Demon” and “The False God” will face-off and that a fully-costumed Wonder Woman will show-up by the final act to help the pair take on a larger threat – which has now been revealed (confirming long-running rumors) to be “The Death of Superman” baddie Doomsday.
Similarly, fans get new shots of Lex Luthor as well as other supporting characters that have, previously, been teased by set photos and casting reports – but placement of these characters within the full story remains unclear. We know that Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor don’t trust Superman but, aside from inferred guesswork gleaned from heavily-edited trailer footage, we’ve yet to discover the pair’s full underlying individual motivations. Fun banter between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, with Lex Luthor party crashing, gives a sneak peek into the heroes’ respective feelings (Superman believes Batman is a lawless vigilante and Batman believes Superman is a dangerous freak) but, aside from fundamental ideological differences, audiences will have to wait to discover what exactly pushes the two do-gooders into an actual brawl.
That all said, in an industry that has become heavily reliant on spoilers in marketing, some fans will definitely question whether Warner Bros. should have held Doomsday back until closer to release and, with three months left before Batman V Superman hits theaters, hopefully there are still a few more surprises the studio is holding back.
The trailer even goes so far as to outright show that Batman and Superman eventually put aside their differences in order to battle Luthor’s brutish creation. Without question, most fans expected Act Three in Dawn of Justice would feature a united Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman but it’s still interesting to see Warner Bros. cast aside any doubt and unveil so much (including Ben Affleck’s bat-voice).
For now, we’re left with some tantalizing teases to ponder – especially how this version of Doomsday will compare to what fans know from the comics.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
