[WARNING: This post contains POSSIBLE SPOILERS for Batman V Superman]
Just one year from this writing, audiences will be treated to Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the followup to Man of Steel and the first step in the expansion of the DC Movie Universe. As we inch closer and closer to its arrival, the demand for any and all information regarding the project (namely, a teaser trailer) has reached a fever pitch. In the meantime, fans will have to be content with teaser images, with Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor the latest getting a reveal.
Whether it’s speculation on Aquaman’s role in the crossover or how Dawn of Justice could be connected to Suicide Squad, rumors have filled the void. The latest reports will only add to that list of intriguing topics, offering one explanation for why the two heroes initially come to blows.
The fight scene between Kal-El and Bruce Wayne’s alter egos is without question one of the most anticipated aspects of the film – as proven by the passionate response to the San Diego Comic-Con 2014 sizzle reel. Even though we know they’ll eventually settle their differences and form the Justice League, the nature of the Superman/Batman confrontation has been subject to much debate. It turns out Lex Luthor could be behind it all.
It’s been assumed that the destruction of Man of Steel‘s finale would be a crucial plot point in the sequel, with Batman seeking out Superman to hold him responsible for the Battle of Metropolis. However, Badass Digest now reports that it’s the other way around; Superman is the one who initiates the meeting between the two, going to Gotham at the bidding of Mr. Luthor.
In their writeup, BD wouldn’t elaborate on why Superman would be working with his future arch-nemesis. The Last Son of Krypton gets the jump on the Dark Knight, apparently rendering the Batmobile useless with a single punch. After showing the footage at Comic-Con last year, even Snyder remarked that it was Superman who looked furious, so it will be interesting to see what put him in that mindset (if the rumor is accurate).
Earlier rumors have pointed to this new version of Batman being a “boogeyman” that draws the ire of many government officials, so it’s not hard to see Kal-El manipulated into believing the Dark Knight is a menace to society in need of removal. Especially since this version of Superman has been shown eager to prove he’s trustworthy, despite the anti-Superman sentiments permeating the proceedings.
But it’s also been suggested that Luthor is one of Superman’s many detractors in the film, so a friendly alliance between the two doesn’t seem likely. Speculation that the villain Doomsday will make an appearance in the movie has never really died off, nor have rumors that the creature is spawned in LexCorp’s labs via General Zod/Kal-El’s DNA. Whatever the case, Luthor trying to get close to a living Kryptonian would make sense.
That’s speculation on our part, as rumors continue to swirl that a teaser is right around the corner (though we’ve heard that before), so hopefully we get a preview soon to help separate fact from fiction. In the meantime, this development should give fans another fascinating tidbit to dissect, as they try to piece together what Snyder has in store and what it all means for the future of this franchise.
