In the wake of Hollywood’s biggest night, where Spotlight, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Revenant all took high honors at the 2016 Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel held his annual Post-Oscars Special. The special featured appearances from numerous Oscar nominees and presenters – mostly in pre-taped segments that were not dependent on who would actually win an award at the ceremony. Among those appearances were Batman V Superman stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Jesse Eisenberg. Affleck actually appeared as a guest, telling a fun story about wearing the Dawn of Justice Batsuit at his son’s birthday party, and introduced a “deleted scene” from Batman V Superman – featuring Jimmy Kimmel outing the Man of Steel and Dark Knight at Lex Luthor’s red-carpet event.
However, in addition to the deleted scene, Affleck also brought a new Batman V Superman clip that, like most of the Dawn of Justice clips that had previously debuted on the late night talk show circuit, is extended footage from the film’s trailer – adding intriguing context and showing off Ben Affleck’s tech-savvy strategist Batman.
Check out the teaser clip below from Jimmy Kimmel Live below:
Given that Batman is wearing his power armor in the clip, we can assume the video has been taken from the second face-off between the titular heroes. As we’ve seen from prior marketing, Batman is wearing his Frank Miller-inspired Batsuit in the pair’s first altercation – only to resurface later armed with battle gear, calling the Man of Steel down for a fight via the Batsignal.
Like the multi-part breakdown of the Superman V Batmobile scene, which was released in several different chunks, the new clip is mostly old footage stitched back together and presented chronologically. Previously, Warner Bros. was able to milk the relatively brief Batmobile crash scene as a handful of separate TV spots and featured video clips, each teasing a different part of the scene (from the initial shot of the Batmobile ricochetting off Superman’s leg to the line “The Bat is Dead”). The new clip appears to follow similar marketing logic; however, this time, fans are treated to an extra ten-seconds of never-before-scene video that, for viewers who are less familiar with DC Comics, answers the film’s most-debated question: How could Batman even stand a chance against Superman?
We’ve answered that question before (in our feature How the Dark Knight Can Beat the Man of Steel) but the new clip showcases dynamics that have been featured in numerous comic book battles before. Batman V Superman is a battle of brains versus brawn. This isn’t to say that Clark Kent is dumb or even less intelligent than Bruce Wayne but, when the two go head-to-head in the comics, Batman regularly relies on traps, technology, and strategy to stay one step ahead of his Kryptonian opponent – where Superman, especially in their first altercations, often underestimates Batman, assuming that brute strength will be enough to outmatch the Dark Knight.
After all, thematically, that’s the central debate at the heart of Batman V Superman – and the reason for Bruce Wayne’s suspicion of a god-like hero. Even if Superman is currently doing good in the world, there’s always the risk that his power will lead to arrogance and that arrogance will get the better of him – and, subsequently, humanity will pay the price (just as that power led to the destruction of Metropolis in Man of Steel). Following the clip’s debut, viewers were already scoffing at the idea that Bruce Wayne could trick Clark Kent with something as simple as a smoke bomb – since Superman should be able to use X-Ray vision to see Batman through the cloud. Yet, the fact that Superman doesn’t use his X-Ray vision is the exact reason why Batman stands a chance in the fight and fears that a careless Superman is a threat – Clark Kent zips through the cloud without thinking or using his full skill set and nearly pays the price (if it weren’t for his lightning-fast reflexes).
Of course, it’s also possible that another cut of the scene will reveal Superman actually does use his X-Ray vision but can’t see clearly through the cloud – because Batman used lead dust in the bomb (which would make this Dark Knight even more tech-savvy and knowledgable of Kryptonian weaknesses than we might be able to tell simply by viewing the 20 second clip). After all, Batman calls Superman to this battle – it would be a mistake to think that his arsenal is limited to power armor alone.
That all said, until fans can see the film for themselves, this is all speculation – albeit speculation based on several of the Dark Knight and Man of Steel’s most iconic battles. Fortunately, viewers won’t have to wait too much longer to find out, as pre-order ticket sales have already begun. We’ll know more when the movie opens in just over three weeks – in the meantime, we’ll keep you up to date with any further pre-release reveals.
