While Marvel Studios’ summer release, Ant-Man, closes out the cinematic universe’s second phase, DC Comics and Warner Bros. will officially launch their own shared universe next year. Through 2020, the studio has scheduled multiple features to be released with various DC Comics heroes and villains headlining films like David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder’s two-part Justice League.
However, before Aquaman, Wonder Woman and The Flash star in their own movies, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are set to face off in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now, new promotional artwork for the upcoming superhero blockbuster shows the two heroes coming to blows.
El Mayimbe of Heroic Hollywood posted the two pieces of Batman V Superman promo art on Instagram, teasing a fight between the heroes played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. In addition, these new images offer nods to the DC Comics on which the film is based. One of the images is clearly calling on artwork from Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s “Batman” #612 – part of the “Batman: Hush” storyline that was published in the early 2000s.
Additionally, the Batsuit worn in the images is reminiscent of the armored suit seen in Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” and revealed to be faithfully adapted in the first Batman V Superman teaser trailer.
Check out the promo art:
In previous weeks, artwork for Batman V Superman has revealed a cape-wearing Wonder Woman and a new version of the Batwing. However, these new images don’t offer anything particularly world-shattering in terms of the suits that will be worn by the heroes in Batman V Superman, previously revealed in photos and the trailer. Plus, Snyder has made it clear that “The Dark Knight Returns” will influence both the film and Affleck’s Batsuit.
However, the promo art does tease the big fight between Batman and Superman that will surely draw in not only comic book fans, but casual viewers as well. Although the very question – who would win in a fight, the Dark Knight or the Man of Steel – has caused controversy between fans, these images don’t offer any hint at a victor.
Of course, we won’t know who will win in the battle between Batman and Superman (or if they simply settle their differences some other way) until Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice debuts next year.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
