Batman: The Telltale Series has been an intriguing way to play in the Batman universe. While the Batman Arkham video game series allowed players to really delve into the character from an action perspective, with its own series of rich stories drawing from the comic universe in its own way, Telltale has had the challenge of having players take the role of the Dark Knight in their classic adventure style of video gaming. The results have allowed for a different approach to the character that has been rewarding in its own way.
Following four episodes, Batman: The Telltale Series will be releasing its series finale episode, “City of Light”, this week. So far this series has followed a Batman who is still gaining the trust of the city of Gotham, including the police, which has also led to new takes on his relationships with Selina Kyle, the Penguin, Harvey Dent and others. This storyline has also introduced a new villain who leads the Children of Arkham in a plot that threatens to destroy the Wayne family name. A trailer for the finale can be seen above, in addition to some new images found at the bottom of this post.
Additionally, here is the official press release detailing the final episode and more:
Citizens of Gotham,
Today we would like to share the season finale launch trailer for BATMAN – The Telltale Series Episode 5: ‘City of Light’.
The final of five episodes in the season, Episode 5: ‘City of Light’ will be available digitally worldwide starting Tuesday December 13th on PC from the Telltale Online Store, Steam, and other digital distribution services, on the Xbox Games Store for Xbox One® and Xbox 360, and on the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. In Episode 5, the leader of the Children of Arkham prepares to execute the final act of a plan to destroy the Wayne family name, and the people closest to you are in their path of vengeance. Can Batman’s ultimate secret be kept – his very identity – when it is causing chaos and death in Gotham? The fate of the Wayne family and of the city itself rests on your choices. What will you do? How far will you go? Which mask will you wear?
Special note for the finale: Players will begin this episode in very different places depending on where they chose to go in the third act of Episode 4.
Additionally, Episode 1: ‘Realm of Shadows’ is now FREE to download for PC via Steam.
The series is also available to purchase at retailers in North America and Europe as a special Season Pass Disc, which includes the first of five episodes in the season, and grants access to the subsequent four episodes as they become available for download via online updates.
Rendered to look like a living, breathing comic book, Telltale’s vision of Batman features an award-winning cast of talent, including Troy Baker in the role of Bruce Wayne, Travis Willingham as Harvey Dent, Erin Yvette as Vicki Vale, Enn Reitel as Alfred Pennyworth, Murphy Guyer as Lieutenant James Gordon, Richard McGonagle as Carmine Falcone, Jason Spisak as Oswald Cobblepot, Dave Fennoy as Lucius Fox, Anthony Ingruber as John Doe, and Laura Bailey as Selina Kyle.
BATMAN – The Telltale Series Episode 5: City of Light is rated M (Mature) for Violence, Blood and Gore, and Language by the ESRB. The series is published by Telltale Games in partnership with Warner Bros.
So far the series has received its share of critical acclaim. While there have been some remarks made against the middle chapters, due to the shoehorning in of certain characters (the Joker) and a lack of crucial story development, the main concept of playing as Batman or Bruce Wayne in a Telltale game has allowed for an emphasis on character work and strategy over what is seen in other Batman games. It has all led up to this final episode, which will hopefully wrap up the story nicely, as well as possibly set things up for future seasons.
Given how different this series has been as far as how it introduces and handles various Batman mythos, it will be neat to see how everything plays out. It will also be neat to learn about the different paths one can go down, as the series, like other Telltale games, has a way of altering based on the decisions you make. All will be revealed soon and hopefully it delivers.
BATMAN – The Telltale Series Episode 5: City of Light will be available on December 13 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, iOs and Android.
