Rumor Patrol: Batman/Superman Film In the Works?

1 year ago by

Both Batman and Superman have major motion pictures currently in the works – Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel – and that’s not even including the proposed Justice League film, which will showcase both Batman, Superman, and a number of other major DC superheroes.

Now there’s a rumor going around that there’s a another film in the works that will utilize both Batman and Superman, which, for simplicity’s sake, will heretofore be referred to as Batman/Superman.

According to our pals at Think McFly Think, Warner Bros. has two plans for a Batman/Superman film. The first, and their preferred plan, is to feature Batman as the veteran superhero who takes Superman under his grizzled wing. Apparently, the hope is that they can convince Christian Bale – with the help of dump trucks full of cash, perhaps – to return to the franchise after Rises, despite Nolan’s absence.

The second path, if they can’t get Bale to return, is to feature Superman as the veteran superhero who takes a newly-cast Batman under his wing. In both scenarios, the studio would like to use Henry Cavill as the man of tomorrow.

batman and superman movie possibly in the works Rumor Patrol: Batman/Superman Film In the Works?

On the one hand, this rumor is difficult to swallow due to the fact that, again, both superheroes have feature films coming out in the next two years as well as a third film featuring both in the next … uhh, three years? Four? Maybe five? After all, how many films can Warner Bros. produce with the same two characters before audiences say enough is enough?

On the other hand, as was reported when Justice League was announced, Warner Bros. is interested in continuing the Batman franchise in some manner after Nolan finishes his tenure. Additionally, the recent DC Reboot will most likely see a veteran Batman create the Justice League, which will involve less experienced superheroes than the caped crusader, including Superman.

This would be the second time that Warners has attempted to mount a Batman/Superman film, the first being Batman VS. Superman – prior to Batman Begins – which was to be directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker. Colin Farrell (eh?) and Jude Law (eh?) were all but set to portray Bats and Supes, respectively, and the screenplay was considered by many who read it to be excellent, with a story that involved the Joker and Lex Luthor pitting Batman against Superman.

Unfortunately, Troy came along and ruined both Batman VS. Superman and the original incarnation of Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, which would’ve starred Brad Pitt. In fact, the closest we ever got to seeing Batman VS. Superman was a Times Square poster in the Will Smith vampire vehicle I Am Legend:

There’s little doubt, in this writer’s opinion anyway, that a World’s Finest film could be well and truly excellent. That said, maybe DC should explore creative success with their lesser known properties first – from The Flash to Aquaman to Blue Beetle to Booster Gold and on — before they return to the Batman/Superman well once more.

What do you guys think about this rumor? Do you buy it? Not buy it? Do you want to see Batman/Superman regardless? Let us know in the comments.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th, 2012 and Man of Steel hits theaters June 14th, 2013.

  1. As long as christian bale and henry cavill arent in the title roles, I.would go.see it

  2. As long as christian bale and henry cavill arent in the title roles, I would go see it

    • I don’t care about Christian Bale, but I DON’T want Henry Cavill

  3. When I think about this more I think it’d be better if Bats is the mentor no matter who’s playing him since Bat man is portrayed as the student very little instead usually making him the master to pass his lessons on to the next generation like we’ve seen with all the Robins, Batgirl, & Terry Maginis(Batman Beyond). Superman on the other hand has always been shown as the one who always needs guidence from some kind of mentor even while he’s an adult.

  4. If DC is serious about this Batman/Superman movie, I think they need to call a time ou and take a step back. Wait to see how the 3rd Batman movie does and how the new Superman does. Then they should decide whether Bale is right for this particular movie and the same for Cavil. If they do try to make this movie I think they should use a storyline that has already been written out in the pages of the many Batman/Superman comics/graphic novels. Honestly I think a Kingdom Come movie would be EPIC and Oscar worthy (if done correctly ofcourse), but maybe that’s just me. DC should also take notes from Marvel on comic book movies. Just saying.

  5. I think it’s about time to put them side by side in a battle against evil. Grew up reading comic’s where Batman and Superman often helped each other.

  6. Sweet Lord, please make it! I’ve been waiting for this movie for a LONG time…and i remember that blasted poster in “I Am Legend” that got me all excited…jerks…

  7. Both ideas are stupid. Batman and Superman are both veterans. Either hero training the other is absurd. They should be pitted against one another by a common enemy like Lex Luthor. Everyone likes seeing Superman getting his ass handed to him by Batman.

    • soooooooooooo true, its great when batman kicks the boy scouts ass

      • I feel the same way :D

  8. I know repeated super hero movies would not get old your talking about iconic characters that have been celebrated for over 60yrs I think DC and marvel have a duty to fulfill the need of the fans it would be a disservice to stop now every super hero movie that comes out always delivers big profits except for the fantastic4 because nobody was ever interested in those characters, with the way special effects are evolving why not continue the epic stories people love to watch , I hope DC and Marvel don’t make the same mistake George Lucas did by not continuing StarWars because he’s to lazy to keep it going there’s some many ways for the stories to go that’s why Stan Lee is the man because he enjoys what he does it’s not about the money even though it brings boatloads it’s about giving people what they want more childhood comics and stories they grew up with brought to life with awesome special effects so it can be passed on and shared with a new generation , plus it’s not like anyone is coming out with anything original these days lets face it everything is either a remake or a crappy movie that people will wait to watch on DVD me personally I can’t wait to see Joseph Gordon-levitt play Robin the only sad thing is that no one can fill the the void left by Heath Ledger as the joker RIP the only mistake they can make is to try and find another joker it will not be done leave it alone there a lot more to be done the riddler, mr freeze the penguin etc please keep it going .

  11. I would love for that movie to happen. I dont think it will happen tho.

  12. I say go for it. If the avengers could do it then so can you.And people been wanting to see it for a long time.If it does happen I’ll be happy.

  13. Life can be funny sometimes and i don’t necessarily mean ha ha funny i mean ironically funny. I think its funny because i remember when i was a little kid the animated Batman Superman movie by Bruce Timm was by far my favorite movie of all time, i remember it was always the one movie i would always take from the video store every time i went there (because when i was a kid they had video stores when i became a teen Netflix came out) every time i’d get it watch it the night i got it with my brother and maybe my sister and if we didn’t get to finish because back then we had bedtimes i would just finish it the next night… and then watch it all over again. Infact one of the things i want for christmas is that movie on dvd, it was one of those movies that impacted my childhood in a really fun way.

I loved the entire Dark Knight Trilogy and had a great time with Dark Knight Rises i love Superman and am really excited about Man of Steel so i’d love to see a Batman/Superman film but i’d like to see a great Batman portrayal because Christian Bale is my favorite Batman and i loved what he did in that trilogy and i like Henry Cavill as an actor and i think he’ll make a great superman if he would come on board for a superman/batman film i would love it, and i’d love if Bale would return for it but since his Batman isn’t a shared universe that won’t happen :( . Personally i’d like to see a Batman/Superman film more than a justice league film because i think the two characters of Batman and Superman go better together and can have better chemistry than an entire army of heroes because in my mind the members of the Justice League have no chemistry with one another in the avengers both in the comics and film the characters constantly bickered with each other over who was right who was wrong who was stronger than the other and that always made it realistic and sometimes if they argued too much they’d loose the battle and thats what made the whole thing so interesting, in the justice league they all just come together, friend each other on facebook and then decide to save the day, in the series they’re going out to dinner with each other for crying out loud (i know they technically did that in the avengers but that was really more of spoof than anything serious), they never have any interesting arguments or intense arguments if they do then its usually one person’s right and everybody knows it therefore the other guy either backs down or when they save the day he throughs the other a guy a glance and a grin and then they continue fighting side by side, in the avengers they had interesting disagreements and realistic ones and intense ones and in the end they never really established who was more powerful than the other and we don’t know for sure if there all best friends or not all we know is that they were able to isolate their emotions in order to solve the real big issue, which was a smart move on Marvel’s part, and the question left is can they do that again in the sequel and other films to come. I think that Batman and Superman have great chemistry and really weren’t portrayed all that interestingly in their solo comic book series Batman/Superman, they made it too dark and really unentertaining i think the two would be great together in a solo film. I guess its interesting how there both orphans in a way but each of them live such different lifestyles i’d imagine in real life if you were and orphan you and other orphans would be a little like family and if someone lived differently than you you’d be critical of that life style but in the end you’d have to just accept the other person for the way they live because you can’t change or control other people only that person can change and control himself.

So yeah i’d love to see a Batman and Superman film.

  14. I sure hope that they can get Christian back as the BATMAN man. I dont think there would be another actor that can fill that role better. Although im not knocking other actors. Ive been a Batman fan since forever and the passion he puts in it makes it seems real. And since evryone is talking bad about the Superman Returns movie, I feel like Roth delivered. He passion as well. I think Stringer found next Reeves in Roth. If giving the chance to

  15. I hope that everything the author said in this Entry does NOT come true, with the exception of the movie itself. I mean.. Batman taking Superman (THE Superman) under his wing? I mean.. wtf is all that about? And if not that, the OTHER way around? That’s ridiculous, i’ve never heard a Comics-movie plot worse than that.
I really hope if that idea follows the plotwriter suffers from a heart attack. If Warner really goes trough with that of making a Super/Batman film i certainly would hope for them to follow the original idea of both characters.
The original comics idea tell these both Superheroes are equivalent or very similar in age and importance to their cities. They’re “brothers” in the same way Zeus and Hades are (the Gods they were inspired into), and both were born in the same age.
If they did the movie using that first plot that’d be ABSURD. Please, NO!

  16. There are lots of actors who could play the Batman. Christian Bale was really good in the first one and in some parts of the second. But phisycallly he missed the char a lot and also wasn’t quite serious or smart enough to play the Detective side of Batman, and instead of that ended up filling it with a total agressive/brutal one.
Of course that was the scriptwriter, the director and the producer’s fault not his but anyways. He’s a good actor and there are also a few other good actors that could fill that roll pretty good both phisically and mentally I’m quite sure :) .

  17. Dude batman superman mobieshould be there

  18. An should totally make mor batman movies with the same characters like bale and Gordon levitt when characters are changed I really dislike the movie bale is the best role for batman and I would pay what ever to watch the JL with all the characters please Wb don’t change the characters line bale and the others who made batman trilogy one of the best films ever
