Comic-Con 2015 is upon us, and with Marvel Studios bowing out of the convention this year, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are stepping to use #SDCC15 as a launchpad for their big DC movie universe.
But while villain team-up film Suicide Squad is expected to reveal some (brief) first footage, and Justice League is still taking shape, fans are expecting to see a lot more from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is in post-production before its March 2016 release date. In that spirit, as the ‘Con gets into swing, we have a gallery of new Batman V Superman images for fans to enjoy!
This is the classic pic that will likely come to define this film: Batman taking on Superman. When recently discussing the controversy over the battle of Metropolis in Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder pointed out that the destruction caused by Superman and General Zod’s fight claimed lives of Wayne industries employees. Those deaths are what make the issue of Superman and his powers a personal matter for Bruce Wayne Batman.
In a moment taking right out of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, we find Ben Affleck’s Batman suited up in armor, standing next to the Bat-signal, seemingly waiting for his showdown with Superman. As stated, the design of the armor, and the style of the Bat-signal insignia are direct odes to Miller’s redesigns of The Dark Knight.
Another image that stuck out from the Batman V Superman trailer was this view of Superman, seemingly in Mexico where Dia de los Muertos (the day of the dead) is being celebrated. The image (and others like it from the trailer), bring up a central theme of the film: the perception of Superman on the world stage. For some, he is obviously a figure of significant spiritual importance.
This second look at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is different from the official first photo: The latter had a more traditional, bald and menacing Lex; this photo has the look of a more hipster-ish modern tech nerd, which is something that a lot of fans are worried about. As for the hair: either Lex loses it during the film (due to Kryptonite)? Or this is a wig we’re seeing, meant to cover a vain Luthor’s baldness.
The most suggestive photo so far has been this shot of Princess Diana (Gal Gadot) and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) out in their civilian identities. According to a previous report, Diana and Bruce know each other’s secret, creating some fun and playful Batman/Wonder Woman chemistry, which longtime fans remember from Justice League cartoons from the early 2000s.
Finally these 12″ resin statues from Batman V Superman will be available at Comic-Con 2015. So if you’re going to be there, be on the lookout!
