Batman: Dead End

The clock tower strikes midnight in a rainy, cold, and dreary Gotham City. The Joker has just escaped from Arkham Asylum once again. The bat signal has been illuminated and Batman is on the case. He tracks his arch nemesis to a dead end alley. The Joker is no match for the Bat, but what else lurks in the dark shadows of the alley, very well might be…

Until the first Christopher Nolan Batman films came along, many Batman fans considered this short film made by Sandy Collora the truest-to-comic-book movie incarnation of The Dark Knight. This premiered at the 2003 San Diego Comic-Con (before movie studios and celebrities invaded) and was a monster hit with fans. It was created by Sandy Collora for around $30,000 – and fans went crazy when they saw it at the time. Unfortunately, nothing much came of it for Collora, who intended the short film to showcase his abilities as a director (the only film he’s directed since creating Hunter Prey).

Keep in mind that at the time Batman: Dead End was made (two years before Batman Begins was released) the most recent Batman film was the horrifically awful Batman & Robin by Joel Shumacher, which starred George Clooney as Batman with Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. This was the film that put the final nail in that generation’s Batman movie franchise coffin, with an uber-camp script, silver highlights on the Batman costume, and the infamous Bat-nipples (technically those were gone after the previous film, but Robin still had them).

So when the last Batman movie you saw looked like this:

Imagine the wild relief of fans when they saw the 8-minute film above that represented Batman like this:

Of course since then, Christopher Nolan went on to give us what may end up being considered the definitive Dark Knight movie trilogy, but at the time, Batman: Dead End was a welcome sign that a satisfying Batman film WAS possible.

A bit of Screen Rant trivia: This was actually the very first item published on the site, WAY back on November 13, 2003 (time flies!), but we’ve resurrected it here today for your viewing pleasure. :)

  1. That short, Batman:Dead End, was good. It took time for Quicktime to show it, but it was worth it. The Joker looked better than the Nicholson version.

  2. That “Batman: Dead End” was truly awesome! I can’t wait to see what the next Bat-feature will be like. I’m glad someone had the guts to make a good Bat-flick and one that didn’t make fun of itself.

  4. VIC,

I should like to commend you for having hosted [THE] BATMAN?: DEAD END here in your domain, despite the cost to yourself.

So long as people like yourself continue to support the efforts of upcoming talent, mediocrity shan’t continue to reign unopposed.

    ??Be seeing you!?

  5. That batman movie was kick ass. I have seen it many times and I would like to know where I can burn a copy of it.

  6. Absoultely incredible work, hollywood should take heed and learn a few things from the people.

  7. That was a very well done movie. I’m impressed that someone even had that idea. Great work.

  8. World’s Finest: Can Sandy Collora do it again?

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Sandy Collora (creator of the fan film Batman: Dead End, which you can…

  9. This batman movie was awesome. What hollywood needs to do is get ahold of this and make an actual movie of just batman and the pred. Dead End was AWESOME!!!

  10. Emilio,

I think you’ll be pleased with the upcoming Batman movie. Chris Nolan really seems to have a grip on the character.

  11. wow, this was pretty awesome, and what was crazy, i just got done watching predator one and stumbled across this on accident. i think the suit needs work though and a batman with the chin is needed

  12. I just watched Batman: Dead End, and I was totally blown away. The stuntwork, acting, and costumes were just great. I was especially impressed with actor Clark Bartram, who played the title character. It was as if he stepped right out of a comic book. Director Sandy Collora said that he hopes to make a sequel to this movie – I am eagerly looking forward to it.

  13. :D that was the best batman movie i have ever seen, the only that comes close is the animated version on tv. i was totally blown away, i would buy this if were for sale, can’t wait for the sequel

  14.

This movie kick major ass, made me wish some of the bigger ups in hollywood who gave the green light to a movie like Fat Albert would have the balls to back up a potential masterpiece like Batman Dead End !!

  15. Hello:
I wanted that they could help me, I am cinema student in the city of Queretaro, Mexico. and they asked me to take a script of some shortfilm, I thought of Batman dead end, but I don’t find the script in any internet part, if although it is somebody I could send the dialogues they would be very grateful, my language mother is not English and there are many things that I don’t understand well.
    Thank you.

  17. this is a great film far better than the last two warner bros batman films.

  18. I loved it. The two last Batman movies were horrible. And this, this is a masterpiece, a work of art. Thank you Collora for rekindling my obsession for Batman.

  19. “BATMAN: DEAD END” blew me away, now this is how BATMAN is suppose to be, dark, gritty, and gothic. They even nailed the costume to a T like in the Alex Ross paintings. If you haven’t seen “WORLD’S FINEST”, by all means do so when you get a chance. Michael O’Hearn is perfect for Superman as well as Clark Bartram is perfect for the role of Batman. Sandy, keep up the good work.

  20. Alex at the comic book shop talked about this and i dint belive him.this truly is a masterpiece.just imagine bigger buget and more freedom what they could do!!!!

  21. this short film rocked! it was very well done, and blending in all the characters..perfect! i have been waiting for a long time to see batman in action how he should be! good job, i’ll be waiting for more…please

  22. odio el ingles amigos asi que se aguantan.

soy un fanico de batman, y este batman si me gusta, aparte de las 2 peliculas de tim burton como director.

  23. If someone came to me and said lets make a short film about how batman is about to put away the joker put away the joker then gets ambushed by the aliens and predators I would never speak to them again. This sounds like the worst idea ever. But the director pulls it off. I love this because it actually has some deep dialog for a short film. It has some good action sequences and I like the classic style bat costume. This is an awesome way to spend 8 minutes.

  24. This short kicks ass! Much better than Batman begins, which sucks big time.

    • Begins is easily the best Batman film. What did you watch?

  25. I agree that “Batman: Dead End” is great but “Batman Begins” certainly isn’t terrible. I think it’s the best of the Batman movies yet.

    Vic

  26. ce court métrage est réalisé d’une main de maitre… un grand respect ainsi que d’énorme remerciement

    Vic

  29. That was great, everything about it, I cant belive someone in hollywood didnt pick this up , this is the way batman should be protrayed.
absolutly awesome, I would pay to see a sequel.
With all the bad movies that hollywood puts out Why doesnt somebody see the potential millions to be made with this. I personaly have seen this short movie a hundred times.
