How Bane Will Fit Into Chris Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Bane in The Dark Knight Rises How Bane Will Fit Into Chris Nolans Dark Knight Rises

Warner Bros. sent the fan world into frenzy yesterday with the announcement that Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy will play Catwoman and Bane in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

While fans had long-expected Catwoman to make an appearance in Batman 3, the addition of Bane was more surprising. The masked bruiser was always an option, but the majority of the speculation up to now had revolved around the character of Dr. Hugo Strange. Now that we know Bane is the primary villain, what does that mean for the plot of The Dark Knight Rises?

Although Bane is a widely known figure to comic book readers, the majority of casual Batman fans may only know the character from his absolutely horrendous appearance as a pumped-up Poison Ivy pawn in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin. In this article, we will offer some better background on “the Man who Broke the Bat” and some speculation as to what Christopher Nolan’s “new interpretation” of the character might look like.

Who is Bane?

In brief, Bane is one bad mother. Created in 1993 by the team of Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench, and Graham Nolan, the comic book version of Bane was quite literally born into a life of crime. Raised in a prison from a young age as punishment for his father’s crimes, Bane quickly learned to fight to survive, killing his first man at the tender age of eight years old. He also showed a tremendous aptitude for learning, becoming a verifiable genius in addition to being a muscle-bound brawler.

Realizing what a unique specimen they had on their hands, prison officials decided to test a dangerous super-steroid on Bane called Venom. Although it nearly killed him, the Venom serum worked, giving Bane enhanced strength and agility. In retrospect, giving a super strong genius even more power was probably not the best decision. Bane eventually broke out of the prison and moved to Gotham City to square off with Batman in the classic “Knightfall” storyline.

At the beginning of the “Knightfall” story arc, Bane organizes the mass breakout of Arkham Asylum. Why? He did it to test Bruce Wayne both emotionally and physically. After months of grueling work bringing down the various psychos tearing apart the city (during which time Bane figured out Batman’s true identity by observation alone), Batman finally faced off one-on-one against Bane. The result was not so good for the Caped Crusdader.

As promised, Bane “broke” the Batman – quite literally snapping his spine in half (and giving us one of the best splash pages in comic book history). He then took his place as the king of Gotham’s underworld, at least for a little while, before being defeated by the new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley (a.k.a. Azrael).

Bane Breaking Batman How Bane Will Fit Into Chris Nolans Dark Knight Rises

Bane in the Nolanverse

Now that we’re firmly caught up on the comic book version of Bane, we can start to think about what Bane might look like in The Dark Knight Rises. As he has demonstrated with his previous Batman films, Christopher Nolan likes to keep things firmly based in reality. That’s one of the things that has made his Batman movies so good (for some). Is it realistic that a billionaire playboy goes out at night to fight crime as a masked vigilante? Of course not. But in Nolan’s movies, you believe that it’s at least possible, which makes the story and characters that much more engaging.

Given Nolan’s penchant for realism, a steroid-enhance super-genius like Bane doesn’t seem like he would fit. Of course, by those same standards, a psychopathic clown with nerve gas that makes people die laughing also seems far-fetched. As we all saw, however, Nolan (aided greatly by an Oscar-winning performance from Heath Ledger) managed to make the Joker not only a believable threat, but also one that fit perfectly within his vision of Gotham City.

Using Nolan’s version of the Joker as a template for Batman villains, there are a couple of good ways to bring Bane to the big screen.

I actually think they will use the Venom, it makes for a good basis of the character. Maybe even make it some derivative of Scarecrow’s toxin, maybe even tested on Bane at Arkham.

Does anyone else think that Crane/Scarecrow should be in this films somewhere, his character was really short changed in the awful sequence in TDK, and I think he could factor into TDKR. Maybe.

Would love to see the Screcrow continue in this — kind of that nagging villian that keeps a certain continuity in the universe that harkens back to the comic books of old. Perhaps make him a bit less pathetic that in TDK.

For me that scene, was the first sign something wasnt quite right in TDK. It could have opened with Batman hunting a deranged Scarecrow through the back streets in the dead of night, Crane jumping at shadows and imaginary monsters, while being stalked from the roof tops by the Caped Crusader.

I really think Nolan will use Scarecrow again.. Ya i agree, Scarecrow wasn’t used superbly in the previous movies(but it didn’t make me to hate a single scene cos other villains portrayal was awesome and very real) and i hope he will play his part in TDKR.. Bane+Scarecrow+Catwoman+Talia will be a great combination.. Lets see.. Nolan will surely make this movie a memorable one..

I think it would be interresting to build on the fact that Batman is a wanted criminal as of the last movie. Maybe the police will hire Bane to come to Gotham and capture the Batman and as Bane become obbsessed with the hero things will escalate out of control.

    • DrSamBeckett    2 years ago

Yes, it could be that the Police deem Batman such a threat that they purposely release the most dangerous and powerful criminal they have to put a stop to Batman.

Your comment is based on the assumption that in the Nolanverse Bane is the most dangerous criminal and not, say, a bounty hunter, profiler/tracker or some other tough guy fringe element of the law.

If they follow the “Prey” storyline, that’s exactly who Bane would be: an aid to the police who goes over the edge in his obsession with Batman.

Well, I haven’t read Prey so you could very well be correct. The only version of Bane I know is from Knightfall.

Nolan will pull this off. He is very prudent in the way he delivers character realism. But what would be a lot more interesting is to see how Batman kicks his butt.

They won’t do the back breaking story, there isnt time to tell that story in one film, it would need at least 2.

They won’t do that. Remember, in BB all of the criminals escaped from Arkham, and they were still rounding them up in TDK, they won’t do something so similar in the third film.

          Reply
          • Sledge    2 years ago

Actually, I think they could very much pull it off. Mirror the sequence in BB, but use it as a chance to show the “Coming of the Freaks.” Nolan treats his movies as art, and he cares about the comics. I could see Bane doing it, and it being used to showcase some amazing cameos of other villains. Probably won’t happen, but it could be brilliant, if treated right. It’d fit Nolan’s style, too, remember Victor Zsasz in BB? It was small and tasteful, and this could be similar, but bigger scale. Again, probably stands zero chance of actually happening, but still

Although I have the full comic run myself, I found the best way to get this story is the full cast audio tapes put out about a year after the comics came out. It is an AMAZING job done by all the voice actors. The story is perfect, almost word for word from the books. If you can find it somewhere (check e-bay) I highly suggest picking it up and listening to it.

If Nolan takes anything from the source material it would be fantastic. Like mentioned in the article, Bane blows up Arkham and deduces Wayne’s identity, then goes to his house and ‘breaks’ him. Nolan’s been saying how this is his last installment (to my recollection) , so what better way to go out than killing off the Batman? Nobody would ever be able to touch Nolan’s universe, and it would make for the darkest, grittiest installment yet. This is one movie where people can actually fear for the main character, knowing something horrible could possibly happen to him at the end. I know we can all be sure that Nolan didn’t just draw villains names out of a hat, Bane while I was hoping would be the villain because he’s my favorite, wasn’t really on anyones radar to show up because he’s fairly unknown to the mainstream. Now with Bane being a tool to finish the final chapter in the story, and his comic book counterpart being the man who tosses a destroyed Batman off of the roof of a Gotham building and declares ‘This city is mine! Here is your hero and protector, take him and bury him!’ Nolan can effectively use Bane as a method to end the story.

At the end of TDK, Gotham is seen in the very early stages of a manhunt for Batman. In my own assumption, I’m guessing that this will be a prominent focus of the movie and not something resolved within the first hour. With Batman MIA and Bane filling the gap left by Joker, that’s probably when Gotham will realize how much they need Batman and while he operates under unconventional means, they are fortunate to have him for their city.

Or I could be completely wrong, my two cents though.

I agree that killing Batman would certainly end the trilogy and then no one else would try to use Nolan’s universe again, and I would be all for that, but I can’t see them actually killing the Batman. Unless they have a massive final showdown and they somehow kill each other.

I made the call bout a back-breaking ending to the film way early in the thread from yesterday. If Nolan went that route it certainly would be pretty brutal to see on screen.

        • DrSamBeckett    2 years ago

It would have to be more than breaking his back, Bane would literally have to kill Batman, they couldnt leave the film with a broken Bruce Wayne, too many loose threads. Nolan wouldnt do that.
But I do like the idea of Bane killing Batman. All the other threats he has faced have been most psychological (Scarecrow/Ra’s Al Ghul/The Joker), so technically he just isnt prepared for such a massive physical threat.

That would undermine everything that Nolan has created in his Batman universe. TDKR might end on an upbeat note of Batman being recognized as a hero by some of the citizens but I do not believe Gotham will just work it out. It’s either death or a bittersweet ending. There will be no major happy IMHO.

Remember whilst its a superhero movie by genre, Nolan’s always been about theme and depth. In the comics, Bane manages to kill him by having Batman round up all of the criminals from Arkham that had escaped until he was an exhausted man. In comparison it would be like having Brock Lesnar fight and defeat every UFC fighter for a month or two, only to have someone come to his house and snap his spine over the culprits knee.

With Batman killed, it gives Gotham a new reality shock; In BB, Batman introduced himself to the world and by the time TDK came around, he was cleaning up the streets to the point where the mobsters had nowhere else to turn but an insane man who dresses like a clown hoping that he would solve their problems. Then when the city was in peril, they cast aside the batman hoping it would bring their problems to an end and that the Joker would stop killing citizens and policemen. Now in TDKR, towards the end if my theory is close to being right, while Batman is dead his symbol he talked about in the first movie is eternal and immortal. Gotham would then realize what they had, a selfless man willing to sacrifice it all to protect the city. Thats when ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Not in physical form , to go and stomp Bane after making a recovery, but in spiritual form within the citizens of Gotham.

I mean we can all speculate with reasonable claims but till the movie comes out, or even a trailer, Nolan will surprise us all again.

I REEEEEALLY don’t think they’ll kill Batman (a probability for which I am very happy). We, as comic fans, can have fun speculating about conceptual possibilities. The general public will NOT. They want their iconic heroes, super or not, to win (and, hopefully, live) in the end. Also, Warner Brothers will not allow one of their biggest names to die at the END of a trilogy…unless it becomes a quadrilogy. Neo can die at the end of the “Matrix” trilogy because that is how the series was set up and developed. Nolan did not include RISES in the title of this film to end Batman’s life.

      Just MY two cents…

Well, Nolan’s Batman films always end with the title coming up – and “The Dark Knight Rises” just wouldn’t fit right if Batman died in the movie. The appropriate title for that would be “The Dark Knight Bites the Dust.”

I don’t see why venom wouldn’t fit into Nolan’s universe at all. It’s a steroid with instant effects, right? Same as Scarecrow’s fear toxin. I think it fits perfectly. It’s even more believable that he would get an adrenaline/testosterone pump that didn’t make him expand to an unbelievable size but gives him great amounts of strength. Both adrenaline and testosterone injections do that instantly. So it even makes sense that he would hook it into his neck to give him a pump before he fights. That would also make the wrestling mask and outfit work. The guy is crazy and pumped up… of course he would wear a wrestler’s outfit to go after someone in a batsuit.

I’ll comment later on the possibilities, but in this post, I just want to say how amusing and appropriate it is that this film will tie everything together nicely in a way most of the viewing public won’t even notice (or care about):

Christopher NOLAN and his brother and one other rebooted Batman in a wonderfully creative way (three people heading up the cause). In this third film, NOLAN and his two cohorts are at it again; now, they are incorporating a character created by three other people…including a NOLAN.

Also, I think it quite brilliant that the dichotomy between order and chaos will be played with again in this film, as with the first two.

BB: Ras wants to achieve order through chaos (fear-mongering to the point of extreme irrationality). Scarecrow helps, being the overt agent of fear. Batman acts as the antidote.

TDK: Joker wants to achieve chaos through chaos (terror is our friend…run). Two-Face helps, being the, at first unwitting, symbol of chaos triumphant. Batman acts as the counterweight on Joker’s scale.

TDKR: (speculation, of course) Bane wants to achieve order through order (the problem of Batman WILL be solved…painfully). Catwoman helps…? Batman acts as…?

Of course, these ideas do not take away from (and, in fact, add to) the many other concepts and musings presented (so far) in this trilogy…I LOVE these films!!! :D

Keeping the Venom wouldn’t be too hard I think, but it’s important they keep up the genius aspects of Bane, which I doubt will be a problem for Nolan.

The Huge Strange Hybrid would make the most sense I think or perhaps some combination of both. If he was hired as perhaps some sort of bounty hunter as someone suggested, that could work quite well too.

All in all, I’m a bit surprised by the choice, but think it could really be a good one and hope for the best in this last film.

The only thing that worries me is Catwoman. Not so much Anne Hathaway as how she’ll fit in the story as well as how I also don’t think there would be much chemistry with her and Bale. It feels like it would be hard, especially when he’s in growly Batman-mode.

Wow Shooter! Nice work! My youngest Son attends CCS as a concept artist. We at home watch Detroit 187 just to get a glimpse of the school downtown. ( and it turns out a good show). By any chance did you see the location shoot for Transformers 3? My Son was like 15′ away from Bey during the parade shot. Some sort of retro Russian vibe. The Detroit backdrop worked for that….Anyway….hope Mr. Nolan saw that. Works for me.

You nailed it with the “vacuum” left by the Joker. Falcone is insane (from Batman Begins), and The Joker and Two-Face pretty much wiped out the other gang lords in The Dark Knight, so Bane stepping in makes sense. It’s the first thing I thought of, after I was impressed they went the Bane route. I’ve read the Knightfall trilogy a couple of times, and Bane’s bad all around. I could definitely see them using elements of Prey in there, as well.

Great job! Catwoman, well… let’s hope Nolan interweaves them well, like he did in Begins and TDK, otherwise, it’ll feel like Batman Forever’s villains–too many.

The connection between Bane, Batman, and Hugo is the drug venom. In Batmans “first solo book since the 50s” Batman uses drugs to enhance his strength because he was not strong enough to save a little girl. (great read)

This was Venom in its earliest form.

It was liquefied because the effects require the pill to be taken every 12 hours as it is based on Miraclo which was used by Hour-man to give him his powers. This was covered in a Suicide Squad side book I believe.

Dr Strange I THINK I will have to dig the books out has part in getting the drug to Batman. If someone could check this sooner great. How did Batman get the drug in the first place?

Transferring it to the big screen even in Nolans universe is fairly easy. Heck PCP and some other current drugs can kick you up a few notches allowing people to do things out of the ordinary…. Mix that with an instant steroid….

As for the end… break his back leave him on a gurney wiggling a pinkie.. Doesn’t matter what they do to him as he will be dead to me once the 3rd is done.

Man I wanted him to be black mask so bad it would be a darker story. Oh well it looks like is going to be a ok bat movie :/ you will see that THE DARK KNIGHT was, and always will be the best bat movie. I just hope this movie (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) is better then the 1st movie. I know is going to be a good movie, but not the best.

SHould Bruce live, albeit broken but somehow having disposed of Bane, there would be loose threads, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing — Inception was a loose thread ending that still has people talking. I’d say leaving it very open to end the series, even on such a dark note, would be a good thing. It gives us all a chance for our own speculation, but at the same time ends the reign of Batman and this particular series.

I was actually looking foward to the Hugo Strange storyline. The “realistic” nolanverse BANE doesnt really seem like it will work. I hope they pull it off tho. Using him as a profiler makes the most sense.
Also looking foward to the new Wayne Manor and batcave. sad to see this is the last batman for nolan. maybe somebody like Del Toro can come in and pic up where he leaves off?

Same here since Nolan after this film is finished with Batman, maybe they could introduce Dick Grayson towards the end of the film, and have whomever take over continue in following films a new actor to play Batman/Bruce Wayne along with the actor that’s playing Dick Grayson soon to be Robin.
Remember Bale said that if Robin is in the next film he wouldn’t do the last film so by inserting Dick at the end of Rises would set up the next film with another actor in the lead role.

i think the black mask bane hybrid would make the most sense, as in filling the mob vacuum and giving someone for the Batman to beat both physically and psychologically.

as for costume….just have bane wear a suit with Venom injections built in

fairly cautious of Anne’s catwoman though

The ideas mentioned in this article make for interesting speculation of what could be a natural progression in the trilogy. I guess the one speculative question in my mind now is this: Can an authentic Bane story be told without the presence (even the glimmer) of Jean Paul Valley?

Yes Jason I forgot about that too. Azreal. This could be the “two-face” of the film, or maybe catwoman is. Like a dark version of robin gone wrong. Azreal, real name Jean Paul Velley, is the guy who takes batmans place after the “back breaker situation”. He takes it too far and starts to kill bad guys and batman must stop him…much like two face. He doesn’t have to be masked, but maybe he is a cop that likes batman and wants to help. Or maybe Selina Kyle is the person to take that place instead of Jean. This story can go anyway still so we don’t know what to expect. for all we know Bane might help Batman at the end…much like the comics Banes Vengeance 2: Him and Batman become friends even after joining the league of shadows. I could see Bane taking a bullet for Batman in the end. Bane isn’t a mad man after all

Oh lets throw something else into the pot….

    What a bout a Bane/KGBeast type person.

KGBeast is in Gotham for some unknown reason.. maybe assassinate the Bat since the police are after him and there may be a price on his head.

They cross paths and because of KGBeasts methods Batman beats him pretty badly. KGBeast with his pride hurt turns to designer drugs created by the military stolen by Catwoman to become KGBane….err Bane.

No tubes just pill popping. Mask? Sure after the beating and the effect of the steroids his face was disfigured a little.

    Reply
    • Gary    2 years ago

It wouldn’t work combining a second rate villain with Bane. KGBeast was so second-rate that he was murdered by some guy who was framing harvey dent, who only appeared in a couple of issues of Batman.

It’s better to follow the Brazilian prison angle, where Bane comes to Gotham to test Batman.

Well I added “type person”. Someone earlier mentioned a hitman type character that morphs (not literally well sort of) into Bane. I just took it a little further using the DCU.

I mean is Brazil even in Nolans universe? (joking)

I like your article. I can see bane mash with one other villian to save space. But that doesn’t mean Hugo Strange isn’t in it. We may see one more (not main, but important) villian in this film: Mobb boss, phycologist, etc. The police have to factor in this story so Strange could still be in the game…maybe like how Morony, falconey, or Mr.Ed who was played by Rudger Hower. Or atleast maybe a mad mayor or policeman. I still think Blackmask also can fill in this story too, just not alot of screen time. Remember gotham now goes to the freaks. enough

    sorry for the grammer. thanks

I doubt that Nolan is going to merge Strange with Bane to make a muscle/genius hybrid. Bane is already a genius, that is why he was able to do what no one had ever done before, which is not only defeat Batman, but crush him mentally and physically. Strange may have deduced Batman’s identity, but so did Bane.

it would be ridiculous to merge the two characters when they could just use Strange as a side villain. Much like Scarecrow was in “Batman Begins” and Eric Roberts as Sal Maroni in “The Dark Knight.”

But until Nolan announces more, it’s really only rumors about Hugo Strange. It was just a rumor that the script was based off of “Prey.” Meaning that any talk of Strange being in the film is purely speculation.
