Batman Dark Knight Returns Part 2 Release Date Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 Release Date Revealed

Suffice to say, many fans who watched Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 are eagerly awaiting the second half. DC Universe did a pretty inspired job adapting Frank Miller’s seminal Batman story into an animated feature (read our review), and the trailers for Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 make it seem like that best may still be yet to come.

Up until to now it has only been known that the second part of the film would release in 2013 – the good news, we can now report, is that winter just got a little bit warmer:  Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 will actually be arriving very early in 2013.

The official release date for Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 is January 29, 2013, and I think most fans would agree that it’s a welcome move by DCU; though it’s curious to see that the studio isn’t shooting for the pre-Christmas season. As with recent DCU feature releases, there will be a Combo Blu-ray/DVD,  DVD (and probably single disc Blu-ray) to choose from.

The Dark Knight Returns is a famous Batman story written by Sin City creator Frank Miller, which imagines a Gotham City of the future, in which  fifty-five-year-old Bruce Wayne has retired from Batman duty and lives in a city slowly slipping into the hellish grip of the infamous mutant gang. After a seemingly-cured Harvey Dent is suspected of returning to his criminal ways as Two-Face, Bruce finally breaks and returns to the streets as Batman – setting off a chain of events that will force the Dark Knight to battle both his most dangerous foe, and his most powerful ally.

Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 ran through the first two volumes of the four-volume tale Miller wrote, covering Batman’s return to duty, his apprehension of Two-Face and showdown with the mutant gang and their leader, with the aid of new Robin, Carrie Kelley. The final half will cover Batman’s showdown with his greatest foe, The Joker and his greatest (former) ally, Superman. Voicing The Joker will be Lost and Person of Interest star Michael Emerson, making his debut as the character. Superman will be voiced by Human Target star Mark Valley, also making his debut.

The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 will be available on DVD/Blu-ray January 29, 2013.

  1. Thats something DC has been doing extremely well. The animated movies have all been pretty spot on and entertaining.

  2. Did DC stop adding animated short films to these movies? It seems the past couple of movies did not have one.

  3. I truly wish Marvel did animation like this.

    • As do I. At least they are making great live-action films though!!

  4. I can’t wait for pt.2 and I’m glad that its release date is sooner than what I was expecting. I picked up pt.1 on Blu-ray and I’m eagerly awaiting the release of pt.2

  5. That’s great news. I had the idea this wouldn’t be out for a while.

  6. Yes! January was a lot sooner then I thought. Previous reports made it seem like late 2013. Part 1 was a fantastic movie I loved it a lot. I’ll wait to pick it up on BluRay till this comes out though. I just rented it before. Hopefully they come out with a pack of the two togethr.

But I agree if only marvel did animation like this.

  7. hell yeah it comes out the day after my birthday, great way to remember the date

looking forward to this part one was cool

  8. Can’t wait for part 2! And is it just me, or does Peter Weller NOT sound like Peter Weller in the opening of that trailer? Also, the trailer shows WAY to much.

As for the release date, sweet! I loved part 1! In december I get Dark Knight Rises on DVD, and in January I get Dark knight Returns Part 2! As a Batman fan, this was a GREAT year for me :)

  9. Yes bat-friends, we are so fortunate to have THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (1&2) and the DARK KNIGHT RISES added to our plethora of awesome bat-titles. I loved The Dark Knight Returns, I have not read the comic, but I have an “idea” of what is to come. Im eager to see the events unfold on the big screen. (AKA, the new flat screen I will be getting if a christmas miracle happens for me and my family! Our one TV broke)

  10. Why does Batman’s voice sound like a different go for a few spots like when he says “All the people I’ve murdered, it ends tonight.” It sounds like two completely different people on the same line. But anyways just watched part 1 and it was surprisingly incredible can’t wait for part 2.

    • Well, that specific line is from a point in the story when Batman is going crazy in his mind, blaming himself (through inner monologue) for costing so many lives by not stopping the Joker permanently for so many years. He counts the Joker’s victims as blood on his own hands.

To answer your question: he’s got a bit of “Crazy voice” going at that moment.

  11. so far away :(

  12. Bring it on, DC always nails it when it comes to animated films IMO, I loved part 1 so much and I can’t decide whether it’s better than “Batman under the red hood” or not? that was my favourite till the latest one but now I don’t know?. “Justice League a crises on 2 earths” and “All Star Superman” are others I love as well..

  13. Just got through watchin’ with my dad and we as well can’t figure out which 1 is better Batman under the red hood or the Dark Knight returns part1 GREAT MOVIE,CANT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!
