Batman Reboot Could Be ‘Batman Beyond’ Movie?

Batman Beyond Movie as Batman Reboot Batman Reboot Could Be Batman Beyond Movie?

There are many hurdles facing DC/Warner Bros. when it comes to the future of their superhero movie universe – including: how to approach the task (solo character films vs. team-up films), which characters to focus on (Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc…) – and of course, how to treat properties that have already had a recent cinematic run (those lingering Green Lantern and Batman reboot questions).

In the case of Batman, the issue is especially problematic: Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy was so beloved by fans that they still can’t accept the idea that it is 100% over – even though the director and his stars keep insisting that it is. Any actor who tries to step into the role so soon after Christian Bale is going to be facing an uphill battle, but a new rumor hints at a scenario that could conceivably help ease the transition.

Batman on Film is claiming that they’ve heard “whispers” that while DC/WB is currently tossing around any number of ideas about how to continue their Batman franchise, one of those ideas – which fans will no doubt appreciate – is to make a cinematic version of the popular ’90s cartoon, Batman Beyond.

For those who don’t know: Batman Beyond was set in the Gotham City of 2039, twenty years after the final appearance of the Batman. Bruce Wayne (now weakened and aged) meets Terry McGinnis, a teenage kid hiding noble sensibilities under a huge chip on his shoulder. After fighting side-by-side with Terry in a skirmish against a local Joker gang, Bruce is left in a debilitated state and must rely on Terry to make it back to his mansion; there, the young man quickly discovers that the old man he’s assisted was actually the legendary hero known as Batman. When the Joker gangsters murder Terry’s father at the behest of a corrupt executive within Wayne’s corporation, Bruce gives Terry the chance for justice in the form of a hi-tech Batman armor and an array of fancy gadgets. After nabbing the bad guys that killed Terry’s father, Bruce and Terry provide one another with new purpose in life, as they embark on a campaign to truly transform Terry into a fully-trained and capable Batman for a new era.

Old Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond Batman Reboot Could Be Batman Beyond Movie?

Old Bruce Wayne in ‘Batman Beyond’

According to BoF, there could  be two-pronged approach to making Batman Beyond fit within in a DC movie universe – namely by using the character of Bruce Wayne as a bridge. In the Justice League era, Bruce would be in his prime and still active as Batman; in the Batman Beyond future era, Bruce would be aged and serve as mentor to Terry. That theory makes about as much sense as any, and it would certainly be more pleasing to fans that trying to wedge the Terry McGinnis Batman into a modern-day Justice League roster; not to mention, both franchises could benefit from using the same actor as both the old and young versions of Bruce.

As for translating Batman Beyond to the big screen? In the last few years, several studios (including WB) have batted around the idea of making futuristic versions of classic characters like Robin Hood or Zorro – so Batman wouldn’t be all that far-fetched, nor unexpected (fans have been calling for a Batman Beyond live-action movie for years). In terms of adapting the cartoon: a piece of concept art by artist Mark Vick  started circling the Internet awhile back, detailing what the Batman Beyond armor might look like in a live-action film, and the results certainly struck a cord with fans:

For my part: Batman Beyond was just one of many great shows that DC/WB put out in the ’90s era, so a film franchise based on that property is already a welcome proposition in my book. More to the point, it would give fans several things they would likely value:

  1. A chance to explore the character of Batman in a new world, from a new angle.
  2. A chance to explore a new character behind the cape and cowl in a new context, free of the same kind of hinderances that come with trying to, say, introduce the Dick Grayson Batman within a “Bruce Wayne prime” era.
  3. A chance to mix the mythos and thematic strengths of Batman with a bonafide sci-fi movie experience.
  4. Did we mention a rogues gallery that mixes (and remixes) both new and old villains?

Marvel Studios is currently expanding their movie universe into futuristic sci-fi territory with Guardians of the Galaxy - and it will be interesting to see how audiences react to that idea – but clearly, the ambition of mixing superhero action with heavy sci-fi tropes  is already being pursued (WB already tried and failed in that endeavor with Green Lantern). No matter how GoG does, or how lukewarm GL was, Batman is a brand that sells itself, and the notion of “Batman in the future” is one that could easily entice millions of movie fans before they every see one second of trailer footage.

For now, however, this is all conjecture; DC/WB has NOT chosen to go in any particular direction yet (that we know of), but Comic-Con 2013 could (hopefully?)(maybe?) change that. If you need a taste of what Batman Beyond is all about, watch the pilot episode opening, below:

  1. You know if christian bale doesn’t want to come back as batman even as a cameo then bring in michael keaton. Wouldn’t hurt.
That said I’m open to a batman beyond movie.

    • I doubt he can, he just signed on to do a pilot about him getting parkinsons on fox.

    • +1

    • Or you could always rip the burrito out of Val Kilmer’s mouth and have him be Fat-Man. It would be a great change of pace to see Batman struggle with his Twinkie addiction.

  2. I hope to see a rebooted Bruce Wayne Batman film first, just to introduce the idea of a non-Bale Batman (fantastic though he was, his trilogy is over) to the viewing public. THEN, I would be extremely happy to see a Terry McGuiness Batman Beyond film.

    • how about a nightwing movie with gordon-levit?
could be a nightwing beyond type film

      • maybe it’s the most logical to make a movie of robin and Nightwing letters are already in the final pitches in the dark night rises …. I do not share the idea of a batman beyond as christian bale is rooted in the minds of the fans at least for a long time the ideal would be to do a prequel with these caracters of DC comics and then return something like a batman return of BRUCE WAYNE and no other that focus on a futuristic version of the character we all know that batman is alone and nothing but bruce wayne batman no one else can be so much eye warner lords

        • this is going to be awesome, a batman of the future,

Wonder what the costume is going to look like because I have seen a lot of amazing concept costumes for this movie.

      • nightwing, who will play him?

    • Oops…I just realized: That should be *McGinnis*.

      Luigi…

While, deep down, I suppose I’d be alright with a continuation of this world (just because it was so wonderfully immersive and well done) I really do believe the Nolan Batverse ended appropriately with the excellent closing of TDKR.

  3. DC right now has no plan, all we are hearing is a bunch of talk.
MOS threw some hints here and there but nothing signifigant, dc blew a royal chance to have a big hit in 2014 considering that next year the pickings
are slim when it comes to possible quality movies. if no announcement is made at comiccon then we can pretty forget a DC in 2014. with what diane
nelson is saying my prediction is nothing is slated for next year.

    • Well Rod thats where your wrong Captain America 2 is well into production, DC is putting alot of hopes in it though.

      • Fail troll is fail.

        • All im saying is if DC wants to actually get the Justice League movie off the ground in the next 2 years Captain America 2 is super crucial. I can’t really say anything about a troll movie, never heard of him.
Imagine if M83 did the Soundtrack for a Wonder Woman movie!

          • Cap is Marvel.. not DC

          • I’m only worried about them messing up batroc the leaper’s costume.hope the costume design is cool but based off comic look and it has to be purple and yellow.

        • Plus Bladeseeker I wasn’t talking to you anyway, I was saying how lame Rods comment was.

          • Talk about lame… you’re aware that Captain America is Marvel, right?

@rod22: Apparently, you haven’t heard that they’re rushing production for Man Of Steel 2 with expected release by the end of 2014.

            • @ bfg66
Your lame bro, like FDRs legs lame. Stop bothering everyone,
We play nice on these boards.

              • Sure, if a bunch of immature trolls is your idea of nice…

        • +1

@Paddys pub rat…. you have no idea what you’re talking about do you?

          • No way I know alot about comics and Captain America is defiantly DC…. Red Skull fight batman in so many story line duh hes even in Arkham Origins. How could Red Skull be in a DC game and Captain America not be…

            • Totally Agree with you Paddy.

            • wtf?

      • well cap belongs to marvel/Disney dc/warner

        • Nope, not DC.

          • Clint eastwood as old Bruce Wayne, done and done.

Who is going to play terry though?

  4. u cant keep rebooting the same chracter over and over, not until at least there has been a JL film, the DK trilogy is fantastic and needs some years between it and a reboot, why not try continuing from DKR with a knight wing film

  5. I think they need to James Bond-ify the Batman series. Make movies where he begins and ends as Batman every time. We are done with origin stories. When they make a new Batman movie, they need to change his voice and mask. Bruce’s chin sticking out looked stupid. Give him more of a medieval knight kind of mask. I think it would look pretty cool. Also, make his voice like Michael Keaton’s, or, at the very most, like the voice in Lego Batman 2.

    • figures DC will be saved by batman,he really is their life raft.
#looking forward to this movie though I really like the idea of it.

  6. 1. A Batman Beyond movie would be whack, because all this time people are crying for a Justice League movie. How would a future character fit into the original 7 heroes who aren’t around in the Batman Beyond series?
    2. How can people now get on board with a Batman who is not Bruce Wayne, when they were all up in arms over the “Robin” in TDKR becoming the next Batman?
    3. Terry McGinnis is not a detective. At least TDKR Robin was a detective.
    4. If you want a Justice League movie, why shop around this whack idea of a Batman Beyond movie?
    5. Why hasn’t MOS made a billion dollars?

    • 1-4. This idea does work with a planned Justice League in that it allows for rebooted Batman films to coexist with the JL without having to overtax the Bruce Wayne character in the JL films. Batman has room to breathe, as his solo films are set in the future.

      5. Because of mixed reviews and mixed word-of-mouth is my guess. I enjoyed it, but it was not universally well-received. Last I checked, it was at about $530M worldwide, but still hadn’t opened in Japan, etc.

      • Actually its at $620 million worldwide and still hasn’t opened in Japan yet!

    • I’ll tackle your question about MoS. it didnt make a billion ww since its still pretty damn hard to make a billion. Out of the 100k+ movies released since the late 1800′s, only 16 movies have grossed a billion or more worldwide (not factoring in inflation). So, it’s still a really difficult task to gross a billion worldwide. Furthermore, Superman isn’t as popular of a character overseas as other superheroes are.

      • Good Career Maz!
Michael Keaton- You peaked harder then Nicholas Cages Hairline, Boom Roasted!

The greatest movie in your career was centered around you beating the crap out of Danny De Vito, Boom Roasted!

But you did a great job as president in Air Force One… No wait that wasn’t you that was Harrison Ford, Boom Roasted.

Beetlejuice, White Noise, Mr. Mom, Multiplicity, and Jack Frost… the story of a Dead Dad who takes the Body of a slowly melting, hockey playing snowman, All set to Sheryl Crow singing Landslide in the backround, Boom Roasted!

        • nicolas cage deserves another shot at a ghost rider movie.

    • Let me fill you in….
1.Batman Beyond would be a great movie because its post-justice era, alot of older heroes and alot of newer lesser-known heroes.
2.Gotham always needs a batman, if isn’t the same man, Bruce Wayne as he is getting older knows this so….
3.Terry McGinnis might not be a detective but he is a carbon copy of Bruce Wayne, “Amanda Waller” important DC character, she overwrites a man’s genetic code with Bruce Wayne’s. So basically she made Bruce Wayne, baby-making machine, he and his wife unknowingly (Bruce Wayne too doesn’t know) have two kids years after the disappearance of batman!
4.Batman Beyond is the future, in the batman beyond universe, the justice league is made of hundreds of heroes…
      5. honestly i don’t know

    • Let me fill you in….

2.Gotham always needs a batman, if isn’t the same man, Bruce Wayne as he is getting older knows this so….

    • People could eventually warm up to the thought of a non-Bruce Wayne Batman. The idea has been thrown out in the comics before, when Grayson took on the role while Batman was trapped in time. I’m pretty sure it’s considered cannon that Terry does become Batman–at least there is an Earth where that is the case, and in fact there is a Justice League of the future with him in it, and in the DCaU, he’s shown up several times with other characters including Static, Green Lantern (John Stewart,) among other names.

Also, you’re right in that Terry isn’t a detective, but that’s what Bruce was for. He was always feeding Terry information, and even when he wasn’t Terry wasn’t exactly stupid, and in fact he was pretty smart.

All things considered, Terry would be a fine Batman should he ever be given his own film.

  7. I’ve actually had an idea for a batman beyond movie for a while now and I’ve been thinking, Tony stark is so popular because everyone knows he’s iron man, so what would happen if everyone knew terry McGinnis is batman? That would make an excellent movie series since it would be something different for the dc films. I also think Bryan Cranston should play Bruce Wayne, fantastic castimg

  8. I don’t think having a Batman Beyond film would work. First of all you have to convince Mr. Bale to make a come back which I reckon he will not. You can’t have him in flashbacks because Bruce Wayne was an integral part of the series. The greatest problem with The Batman character is that no one can do what he does. No one has the intelligence that he has. Throughout the series it was Bruce Wayne not Terry who saved the day. Many people would agree that Nolan’s trilogy is well done but many still think he screw it on the last 30 minutes of the DKR. Be honest, how many of you think that Mr Gordon-Levitt would have made a convincing Batman. The best way to do it is by re-introducing the character after the second part of MOS and then you can think of a proper version of The Justice League.

    • Yeah, but in Batman Beyond, Bruce was retired and crime was rampant in Gotham without him. (Which is odd, apparently considering there apparently other heroes on Earth at the time, but of course they probably have their own places to worry about.) Without Terry, Bruce would have been content to let the thugs and villains run Gotham so long as they stayed off his lawn. Bruce was the mentor, and he helped Terry out when he was needed, but let’s now downplay the significance of actually having a body out in the field, and when trained Terry did a fantastic job–even discovering his own way of handling a “clone” of Bruce’s greatest enemy, The Joker. He used his mind to figure out that Joker is/was arrogant and likes to talk, (because he’s like Terry in that sense,) and used that against him.

  9. Its time to make a batman beyond movie. We just ended the greatest batman trilogy ever and what happens? I say get a new director and take it to new heights just like Fast And Furious. For batman we are talking about a mid 30′s guy fighting crime. Why not use batman beyond to bring in a bigger audience using a younger character.

  10. I would like to see a Batman Beyond movie, only AFTER a JLA movie. Not before.

  11. I prefer seeing a Batman reboot get started along with Justice League before rushing into Batman Beyond. Id like to see more villains we have not seen on film yet in the Batman reboot like Killer Croc or Clayface since Terry faces off against villains like those in the future aswell. Better to have Batman reboot/Justice League started up then have Batman Beyond down the road to have to lead to. Id like to see the Batcave have Batman,Robin,Batgirl,Nightwing’s costumes hung up in glass cases aswell as villain’s & stuff that belonged to them.

  12. Would be interesting, would be great to have bale play an old Bruce Wayne, passing the torch to the new Batman, I think DC/DC is doing an awful job not even contacting bale about reprising his role as the Dark Knight, I mean I like Batman Beyond, but not enough for them to make this over attempting to have Bale back as the Dark Knight or even rebooting with a new Batman for Justice League. I love Henry Cavil as Superman, but this franchise needs Bale or another actor of his caliber to carry the DCU Just as you have RDJ for Avengers and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine/X-Men

    allthingscomic@gmail.com

    • I will be the first person to vouch for Bale when he’s great like he was in The Fighter (great is an understatement, he was amazing in that movie), but honestly, he wasn’t that great in the Batman movies. But to answer your call for an actor of his caliber (or better) I nominate Karl Urban. That guy is an awesome actor, he can play any role it seems… If you don’t think he can play the bad-ass no-nonsense crime fighter, just watch him in Dredd.

      • The unintentionally hilarious Dredd scowl he makes certainly isn’t helping. You can say what you want about Stallone’s Dredd but at least HIS scowl looked badass.

        • Ah yes, the one in million that would say anything from Stallone’s Judge Dredd was better than anything in the new Dredd…

          • Did I say that? I was just talking about who made the best Dredd face and that’s just not Karl Urban. Also, the costume looks too large for him. To be honest, I’m yet to see his movie but the trailer did not entice me one bit, mostly because of that scowl.

            • @bfg

LMAO, that’s why you’re saying all of that, because you haven’t seen the movie and am just judging by some clips and pictures, lol. Alrighty man. :-)

              • Well, yeah. Unless they crammed all his bad scenes in the trailer and kept the good ones for the movie exclusively, which sounds pretty unlikely to me…

Also, what’s the “all of that” you’re talking about, exactly? I never said he wasn’t a good actor or anything, all I said was that his Dredd face doesn’t help imagining him as “the bad-ass no-nonsense crime fighter.” There’s no point making a fuss about it.

      • @ Ken J

I agree about opinion about Bale. Bale pretty much made it clear his days as Batman are over & prefers someone else takeover the cape & cowl. And if it’s JGL, count me out if WB wants to drag that trilogy. I always thought Tom Hiddleston would make a Great Joker w/ Harley Quinn by his side.

        • I will disagree, i believe bale is the only batman to add any emotion to his performance and give a since of humanity and struggle that hasnt been seen in a comic book film

  13. I think they should totally have Kevin Conroy play Bruce Wayne since he’s actually older, and already has the perfect Bruce Wayne/Batman voice, lol.

    • @ Ken J

Kevin Conroy would’ve been the best no doubt in live-action. No-one’s been committed to the character as he has over the years whether they voice actors or live actors. Batman:TAS imo is best adaption of the characters yet than any show or live-action film imo.

      • That is rediculous to even state thst conroy would be the best live action batman. One he looks nothing like bruce wayne, two he isnt near experienced at live action as he needs to be. Also of course batman tas is the best incarnation you can do things in a tv show you cant do in live action. Its impossible to compare live action to animated tc series. Just cause mark hamill does a great joker doesnt mean he should play him

        • @Trey

I disagree. Mark Hamill could definitely pull off Joker (if he wasn’t so out of shape, lol). He has live action experience unlike Kevin Conroy. And to say he doesn’t look like Bruce Wayne… How does Bruce Wayne look like? He’s a fictional character! Christian Bale doesn’t look like Bruce Wayne if you use either the comic book or The Animated Series to compare… This is supposed to be an “old” Bruce Wayne. All he has to do is look like he could have been Batman at some time, be old, and talk the part… And just so you know, voice acting isn’t “easy” and does require acting. Good voice actors actually act out the parts while they are reading the lines. That’s how sometimes you’re watching an animated movie and there’s something off about the way the lines are being read compared to what’s going on the screen. It’s not bad animation, it’s the fact the voice actor is merely reading and not acting it out… Given how talented his voice acting was while watching the old animated series, I’m willing to bet he can probably hold his own on the screen too…

  14. I would love to see a Batman Beyond movie with a kind of a Blade Runner influence. I would love to see Blight/Derek Powers,Inque, and Spellbinder as villains in a BB franchise.

  15. http://reviewersfromtheinside.blogspot.com/2013/07/possible-batman-beyond-movie-good-or.html

IF anyone is interested in reading my thought on everything check out my blog.

Other than that I would love to hear everyones casting for older Bruce or someone who could play both a younger and older in both series. Then for Terry.

I think if Logan Lerman could beef up a lot he would make a great terry, other than that I am really stuck on who could play him.

I think Clint Eastwood or Liam Neeson would make a great old Bruce wayne, but as for someone who could transition between old and young Id like someone like Guy Pearce. What do you guys think?

    • I really want to see Henry Cavill play Batman in the new reboot, think about how awesome he would be! And Morgan Freeman as Alfred!

      • Sure, and maybe Cavill should also play Green Lantern? Ooh, I got an idea: why doesn’t he play ALL the roles in the Justice League movie, including Wonder Woman?

        • No, Nathan Fillion has to play at least half of the DC male roles…

          • So we’re keeping Cavill for Wonder Woman, then? Sweet!

    • Have you even seen Batman?? What are you trying to make Taken 3??
      Seriously…

      • Old bruce doesnt do much, he is just a strong willed tough old man aka liam neeson or clint eastwood. Im only talking about batman beyomds where he would be a aupporting cast member

    • @Trey

I have to disagree with Logan Lerman… I’m not sure if you’ve seen Batman Beyond, but Terry was a punk kid with a bad temper when he ran into Bruce Wayne for the first time. Logan doesn’t have that “edge” about him.

  16. @ Maz

  17. If done right this could be so awesome…I would love it if brad bird directed it…he has a pretty cool eye for big cinematic scenes but can also capture great intimate dramatic moments with his actors…see the iron giant and mission impossible ghost protocol

    • Brad bird
      Wachowsi’s
      Or Duncan Jones

  18. I think we need to wait for JL films to pass before a Beyond movie is done.

    • good idea, it can wait for now.

  19. I think Kevin Conroy should be the old Bruce Wayne if they ever make a Batman Beyond, and they should use the guy who played the Detective in the Dark Knight for Terry. I think the movie would sell out just seeing Kevin Conroy in a live action Batman roll, and he’s not Batman.. We could even see him in the Bat suit making his last run as Batman, and then retire the suit and go on from there. He’s the most recognized voice, and he’d look the part.. It’d be so awesome seeing him as Bruce Wayne, and most of it is like he’s doing voice over work anyways, we only see Bruce every now and then. Mostly, he’s just a voice in Terry’s’ head..

  20. Of there’s any chance for a Batman reboot. In this case Batmand Beyond or the original story, I would really like to see Gabriel Macht and/or Patrick J. Adams from Suits to shine in this reboot. They have this great chemistry together!

  21. as long as Joseph Gordon is The new Batman and goes against The Riddler and another great Batman villain. Bale could come back as a older version of bruce wayne and help track down The Riddler while Joseph does the fighting since riddler would have some accoplices and also helps with the detective work.

  22. I’m really hoping that this is true. I hope that Micheal Keaton will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne For Terry, I say Colin Morgan from Merlin or Aaron Paul from Homeland would be great. Please Warner Bros, make this happen.

  23. as long as Joseph Gordon is The new Batman and goes against The Riddler and another great Batman villain. Bale could come back as a older version of bruce wayne and help track down The Riddler while Joseph does the fighting since riddler would have some accoplices and also helps with the detective work.

    • Yah, I take it you have never seen Batman Beyond…

And I think the point of all of this is so Bale DOESN’T return… They’ve made it clear that their part in Batman is done. And for the collective universe for Justice League, they couldn’t really use that version of Batman. Not to mention, hopefully they will make a Batman character a bit more like the comics/animated series. You know, where the “World’s Greatest Detective” actually does freakin’ detective work to defeat the villains??? Silly idea I know…

  24. batman beyond action figure toys and vehicles

  25. 1.Batman Beyond would be a great movie because its post-justice era, alot of older heroes and alot of newer lesser-known heroes.

  26. I wonder if the Batman/Superman movie will go with this angle? Could be interesting to watch.

  27. Cool deal! I think Joseph Koninski should direct it. Tron 3 and Oblivion were really cool stylized sci-fi films and he would do an awesome futuristic Gotham City.

    • Except style isn’t everything. A character like Batman especially needs substance. I haven’t seen Oblivion yet but Tron 2 (not 3) was blatantly devoid of that.

  28. Why not a cross-over from The Dark Knight Rises to Batman Beyond. With Christian Bale coming back and teaching Gordon-Levitt to be Batman. It would make perfect sense. Anybody can be the Batman.
