Batman Reboot Justice League Movie Discussion Ben Affleck Is the New Batman; Superman vs. Batman Release Date Revealed [Updated]

Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The studio has slated the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.

Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.

Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing. The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.

Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

In the announcement, Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

Kroll added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”

Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which he also directed and produced, earning acclaim and a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance in the film, as well as a number of directing honors. In 2010, he starred in and directed the hit crime thriller “The Town.” His recent acting work also includes “The Company Men,” “State of Play,” and “Hollywoodland,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Earlier in his career, Affleck starred in and co-wrote (with Matt Damon) “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay.

The new Super Hero film is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers.

Production is expected to begin in 2014.

  1. I thank ben would play a better flash chericter becaus he did a damb good job playing dare devel wich is marvel version of flash so i thank bin shuld play the roll of the flash not the dark knight find some one else like the rock or tatume

    • Daredevil is Marvel’s version of the Flash? What in the hell are you talking about? Wait, let me guess: Because they both wear red costumes? LOL

Trust me kiddo, the similarities end right there and don’t go one iota further.

    • Ben Affleck sux’s to no end!!! he doesnt know any mma or is he an action hero!! Did any one see daredevil?!! hello!!! Does anyone think that was a good movie?! the batman is ruined!!! u might as well have brought back Adam West!!! atleast he would have been cool

  2. Thank you boxing cannabyte! I thought surely I wasn’t the only one that read that post and thought,” daredevil like marvels’ flash,” what the hell is he talkin about lol…. It definitely needed to b said…. In all of Marvel there is nobody like Flash. And likewise for DC, there isn’t anybody quite like Daredevol. Ironically enuf Daredevil is my favorite Marvel character, and Flash is my favorite of all-time. I’m almost hoping that WB doesn’t try and make a flash film, because I know that i would b so let down. But I AM excited to c how the next MOS flick turns out. I enjoyed Cavill’s superman and I’ll watch anything Snyder makes, so I am waiting a bit anxiously.

    • what about quicksilver?

    • Things sure are looking interesting now, eh? I kinda wish the CW Arrow and Flash would be absorbed but it’s not looking likely. Who would be your pick for the Flash? And do you think he should be younger like Supes or mature like Batman? Id love to see the Arrow become Batmans protege

  3. What I thought about the news that regarded (vaguely I might add) batman being older, wiser and wary etc. it made me think that batman was goin to be waaaay older and we were about to see a Bruce Wayne along the lines of the ‘The Dark Knight Returns’. I thought we were gonna be dealing with an older man. Affleck’s is 41 but he could pass for 34 any day. They said older and I thought OLDER. I thought someone like David Morse or maybe Robert Patrick ya know? Two weird examples but you get where I’m going with it right? Affleck’s is not what I would call an older man. He’ll look 40 when he’s in his mid 50′s…. Maybe. But I think that the dude has done a lot to shake his image as a pretty boy. He’s bagged a coupla’ oscars and works very well when he’s in control of production, directing etc. Now we’ll see how he woks under Snyder in a big budget CGI driven film. But we all know that people will complain no matter what. Like the people that said “I’m not even gonna go and see it now….” Shut up u clowns, we both know that’s BS…. You will see it, if for no other reason than to have something to b**** about. I have a good feeling, and I think that Affleck’s gonna be a beast as batman. If Nolan hadn’t been chosen to take the batman helm bak in 05′ hed been batman back then. WB wanted him to b batman almost ten years ago. I can’t wait

  4. Now that this whole bashing is done against Ben Affleck (which Im glad he got casted) I think its only fair that other people get cast too for the next Batman movie. heres my list for who I think should be in it
    Dick Grayson/Nigthwing/Robin — Liam Hemsworth
    Jason Todd/Red Hood/Robin 2 — Josh Hutcherson
    Tim Drake/Red Robin/Robin 3 — Andrew Garfield

  5. Impressive but you forgot the Stephanie Brown was the 4th Robin before she was Batgirl, which made Damien the 5th unless you include Carry Kelly who is very hard to fit into the time line. Also Cassandra Cain (David’s daughter) is by far the baddest most kick-ass of all the Batgirls. Also Mila Kunis should be clearly cast as Nisha Ratkko 1st daughter of Ra’s al Ghul and half Russian Sister to Talia. What would be really be cool is if they gave her the duel identity of Red Claw who was a super cool villian but never identified. Jennifer Lawrence should of been cast as Wonder Woman but for better or worse the role went to Gal Gadot. A powerhouse actress like Jennifer should only be cast in a lead role, if not Wonder Woman maybe Selina Kyle. Also Benedict Cumberbatch would be quintesential as Lex Luthor (Leader of the Legion of Doom). Last Matt Damon as Nightwing. In Dogma Ben and Matt even looked like Batman & Robin.

  6. Apologies for all of the words that were spelled incorrectly. Especially Nyssa Raatko! Mila if you’re listening you would make the perfect Nyssa Raatko (Red Claw)!!!

  7. Olga kurylenko: Red Claw Tim Curry: An older ‘aged’ joker
Jennifer Lawrence: Selina Kyle Paul Giamatti: Penguin
Meryl Streep: Dr. Leslie Thompkins Bullock: Mark Boone Junior
Ali Larter: Vicki Vale Maroni: Michael Imperioli
Paul Bettaney: Lex Luthor. Carmine Falcone: Ray liota
Kevin Durand: Bane. Lana Lang: Jessica Biel
    Peter Weller: Commissioner Gordon
    Crispin Glover: The Riddler
    Ben Foster: Dick Grayson/Nightwing
    Tim Curry

  8. This is absolute $hit, batman completely sucks now, the series is ruined, warner brothers should offer Christian bale a lot of money or find someone that can finish off the series with a boom not with some pu$$y that kills the vibe

  9. This is absolute $hit, batman completely sucks now, the series is ruined, warner brothers should offer Christian bale a lot of money or find someone that can finish off the series with a boom not with some pu$$y that kills the vibe, the series is crushed I hope they just cancel the movie

  10. I could be the next Lex Luther. I’m bald and I could play the part just like spacey. I kind of look like spacey. Lol. Call me WB and DC comics I will play Luther for you.

  11. Has the world lost it’s mind? Affleck as Batman? Has everyone forgotten what a horrible actor he is? Gigli, Phantoms, Daredevil, Jersey Girl, Sum of All Fears, Paycheck. All of these movies were HORRIBLE thanks to Affleck’s acting.

I will see this movie half simply because I am a fan of superhero movies (same mistake I made with Daredevil) however I will NOT be paying to see it. My interest is questionable at best and the other half of the reason I want to see it is to see just how badly Affleck can f*ck up the Dark Knight role.

  12. Ben if you’re listening, please don’t pay any attention to these little fan boy dweebs! They’re just jealous because you’re 6’4″ and they’re 5’3″. You absolutely rocked in The Town, The Boiler Room, Argo, Dazed and Confused, Chasing Amy, Hollywoodland and you were the bomb in Phantoms yo!!! I think you will make an awesome Dark Knight! Also, you sort of prophesised this responce in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. If you check the stats more people support you than oppose you!

    • Yes, we’re all jealous of his s***** acting. And he was only passably decent in The Town.

  13. Does anyone recall the original, and dark, Mummy movie? A gritty and dark Zorro movie would really capture the imagination. And it’s my opinion, but any future Zorro movie
should be played by a Mexican, or Mexican-American actor. Say, Lou Diamond Phillips, for example. Zorro should be cast in the past, fighting maybe bad boys like Pancho Villa, and Emiliano Zapata, amongst others of that day. Casting him back then would work better with him on horseback. Film it in Mexico City, and bring out the mystique of that old city. Mexico has got to have worthy actors to play Zorro. And, absolutely, Zorro should be made into a trilogy, like batman. Mexico needs a hero like Zorro. Throw some humor into it, and keep it mysterious, and dark.

    • Zorro is not Mexican, he is a Spaniard. Mexico City? is Zorro fighting against water born diseases?

  14. @ Jose Sanchez

I agree with your basic premise but isn’t Lou Diamond Phillips Filapino (not to mention old). If age isn’t an issue how about Danny Trejo? He would be one bad ass Zorro! Zorro Kills!!! How about Michelle Rodriguez as Catalina Flores (Taranchala)? I would love to see her butt in tight black latex!!!

  15. Colin eagleton from something burrowed would be perfect for Batman. Superman is slightly bigger than Batman. Henry is slightly bigger than Colin. Ben Affleck is 6,4.

  16. I’ve been a Superman fan my entire life, but this movie is going down in flames with this casting.

  17. I have no problem with Ben Affleck as Batman. Truth be told he will be the closest version of Batman to date, he will almost match the Height of the Batman in the comic books. Ben Affleck is 6’4 he will be the tallest movie Batman yet and hes a really great actor and with all the training and as ripped as he will get it won’t be a problem. As long as he doesn’t do funky crap with his voice the way hey made Christian Bale which was stupid, Batman doesn’t do that he just lowers his voice to sound more intimidating.

  18. I really liked Christian Bale, he was an awesome batman. Plus he was super hot !!!!

  19. I really liked Christian Bale, he was an awesome batman. Plus he was super hot !!!! <3 <3

  20. This is crazy does anyone remember what Ben Affleck did to the Daredevil? It was such a horrible rendition of the daredevil they will probably never do another one again. His acting reviews were terrible. He is the last person they should have chosen for Batman.

    • Funny how everybody complaining about Ben’s acting would cast Wrestlers and Mixed Martial Artists as the Dark Knight. True Daredevil wasn’t a great film but it would have sucked no matter who was cast as Matt Murdock. Aside from fitting the physical attributes of Bruce Wayne better than any other actor Ben has some serious acting chops. Just watch The Town, Argo, Chasing Amy or The Boiler Room. Anyone who would pick Gina Carano as Wonder Woman and complain about Ben Afflect’s acting is either a hypocrit or a retard.

    • Why do people keep harping on “Daredevil”? Scarlett Johansson rocks as Black Widow but her Silken Floss in “The Spirit” totally Sucked! Samuel Jackson’s Octopus sucked but was great as Nick Fury. Chris Evan was awesome as Captain America but awful as The Human Torch. Halle Berry was very descent as Storm but I can’t even think of an adjective that would properly depict how terrible her Catwoman was!!!
