[UPDATE: Aside from Batman vs. Bane, does new footage reveal Talia al Ghul as a TDKR villain?]
A number of revealing set photos from The Dark Knight Rises have been pouring onto the web throughout the weekend, giving Batman fans a sneak peak into Christopher Nolan’s closely guarded film.
Last night, we shared a first look at Tom Hardy as Bane in his military-inspired full costume, along with a couple snapshots of the powerful villain standing atop what appears to be his very own version of the Tumbler. Today, we have even more goodies from the set of the film, including a glimpse at Batman and Bane standing side-by-side.
The first image, from fan Matt Maranowski (via Latino Review), shows Christian Bale and Tom Hardy between takes standing around the set. Interestingly, the pair don’t seem all that far apart in size. Does this mean that Bane isn’t going to be the massive hulking beast we all expect (at least not from the get-go)? Of course not. Check out Latino Review or these Getty Images (Here & Here) for a few added images of Batman and Bane duking it out. More on why Bane will still be a big brawler after the image.

In looking at this picture, there are a couple of things to discuss. First off, Bane and Batman look like they’re roughly the same height and body type. Obviously, that’s a big change from the comics, where Bane is so overwhelmingly large that he’s able to snap Batman like a toothpick over his knee.
Before everyone pulls out their fanboy pitchforks though, let’s remember that this doesn’t reflect what the characters will look like on the big screen. There are tons of camera tricks to make one actor look big and another actor look small, and it’s not like Christopher Nolan is an amateur, so I’m sure that the size issue won’t come into play.
More to the point, Bane seems to be in his regular costume here. As noted in the Dark Knight Rises teaser trailer, when Bane is hulking toward Batman, he’s showing off a lot more muscle. My guess is that these photos represent Bane when he isn’t on the super-steroid Venom. Presumably, he will inject the steroid (or inhale it), when he really needs to put a hurt on the Caped Crusader.
But wait, that’s not all. We also have another picture from the set of The Dark Knight Rises, and this one definitely confirms an earlier story SPOILER. Seriously, this image (from the SuperHeroHype forums) could spoil a big action scene plot-line in the movie, so if you’re at all sensitive about these things, look away!
Consider yourself warned the following could be considered major Dark Knight Rises spoilers!

Prison Break
Can anyone say Knightfall? As we’ve discussed previously here at Screen Rant, the Knightfall saga is one of the most critical stories in Batman history. The series begins with the mysterious Bane breaking out every super-criminal from Arkham Asylum. As Batman subsequently tries to recapture them all one-by-one, he breaks down both mentally and physically. By the time he faces off against Bane, Batman is so weak that he’s easily defeated, leading to Bane literally breaking him in half.
If I’m reading these images right, it seems like Nolan and company may be using a similar set-up to introduce Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. If Bane breaks a bunch of criminals free at the beginning of the film, it would send Gotham into a panic and force Batman to come out of hiding (where he’s been since the end of The Dark Knight). Could this scene be the first big action set-piece of the film?
The following videos certainly suggests so:
-
Talia al Ghul Revealed?

UPDATE: A reader over at Comic Book Movie snagged a video from The Dark Knight Rises set, which features a sequence of what looks like armed mercenaries escorting “a lady wearing a brown jacket and dark khakis,” out of Gotham City Hall. The mercenary and their lady all climb into…a camouflage tumbler and drive off.
Now, the speculation is that this is a scene of Marion Cotillard’s character, “Miranda Tate,” who we (and a lot of others) have long speculated will be revealed as Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter, Talia – thereby tying this third and final chapter directly to Batman Begins. While the footage is from a distance, a closer look at some still images of Cotillard in costume confirm it is in fact her emerging from Gotham City Hall and hopping in that tumbler.
Check out the footage for yourself:

Vehicles

Finally, for a look at not one, but TWO tumbler vehicles used on The Dark Knight Rises set, go HERE. For a look at an all-too-familiar Batpod, go HERE.
-
What do you think? Are Nolan and company going to take a page from the Knightfall saga? If so, is it also possible that Bane will break the Batman’s back?
BONUS: Even late night TV shows are airing video from the Dark Knight Rises set!

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters a little less than a year from now on July 20, 2012.

I am really surprised that all of these images are leaking, I don’t recall this happening with the other Nolan Bat films.
They’re filming in the middle of a populated city. I’d be amazed if there WEREN’T any leaks.
Um… last time I check Chicago is rather populated as well.
I agree.
I agree. Nothing like this came out for The Dark Knight. Then again, the last movie was not as anticipated at this stage. The hype for the last film didn’t get to the insane level until Heath Ledger passed away.
Now a days, with pretty much everyone and their dog owning a portable multi-media device, I don’t know how they would keep it a secret.
^ they are literally filming around the corner from the public
A batman death scene would be epic.
thats very possible because in the teaser they said every journey has an end. maybe this is the end of the legend… in nolan’s universe of course.
It’s absolutely the end…but is Bats going to die? It’s an interesting question.
good question. this will conclude this nolan batman trilogy so we dont know what to expect. it will be alot of pain and tragedy in this movie, plenty of action, a great story that will be talked about for years to come. but they will do everything to batman, break him mentally and phsically, hunt him, beat him til he cant do anything, but he wont die, because you can kill a man, but not a symbol. he’s going to show us that his strength and will power is far more powerful than this evil. that would be more epic than a batman death scene
The only thing that doesn’t suggest he dies is the ‘Rises’ part of the title though ya know? Still, his death would be interesting.
It looks like batman will be using the other tumbler prototype first, than possibly painting it black?
Guess you’ll find out when…
YOU WATCH THE MOVIE
Bane looks like he lost some weight !
Read the article.
How amazing would it be if he breaks out other villains that could have been captured in between ‘Batman Begins’ & ‘The Dark Knight’ & ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?! I can hope, can’t I? Haha
We see Penguin or someone running around.
this further confirms that hardy is a bad choice for bane, not only is he shorter but he isn’t even big enough to fit bane’s physical type (body builder big). ohh crap i shouldn’t have said that, now the nolan girls will come after we for criticising their god
People don’t really kiss nolan’s feet like he’s a god (I absolutely hated inception). Just accept that people don’t agree with your nonsensical opinion lol
whah whah whaaaaa im a whiney lil baby!! whaaaaahhh!!!
Jwalka… again, I have to ask the obvious question to those commenting on film before post work has been done to the raw video. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A MOVIE??? Trust me… Bane will look huge in the final cut. And there is a chance that all these scenes are prior to him using the venom…
Also… WATCH THE TRAILER AGAIN… Bane looks massive when he is approaching Batman. That’s what post production will look like… that alone should shut you up.
Could that possibly not be tom hardy with bale/batman? maybe its a body double for when he isnt on the venom and is all tiny??
Do we know for sure that Batman has been in hiding since the end of TDK? True, Gotham hates him and Gordon has disavowed him, but “silent guardians” have a presence, even if they are hunted. And the big point in TDK was being free to *do* the right thing, not hide. Do what, though?
And who put everybody back into Arkham again before this breakout? They had “lost the Narrows” at the end of BB, and that has been hanging in the air ever since.
And who is in that camo Tumbler? Must be sympathetic, or the armed escapees would have been shot by the car’s weaponry (and the door would have been closed).
If the Bat is broken, who’s going to take his place while Bruce Wayne recovers, considering this is the last Batman film from Mr. Nolan and Mr. Bale? Of note, in the teaser trailer, Gordon is set up in bed and acting like someone who is paralyzed. And at that point, Batman is gone, since Gordon says he must come back, but is he talking to Wayne in the other bed, Wayne as a hospital visitor, Batman, or Wayne in street clothes and using an altered voice (he did do that in TDK when the group of police officers had tape over their eyes and couldn’t see him)?
Finally, if Nolan and company do or don’t follow “Knightfall” in any respect, what might be the appropriate “watchwords” for TDKR (it was “fear” for BB and “chaos” for TDK)?
Tomorrow, please.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Sub-Zero called. He wants his mask back.
ah! real good one! because the luchador mexican wrestling mask is much cooler and grittier!
haha that mask would be terrible! so so camp
SPOILER ALERT!!
this features the Blackgate explosion ?.. maybe this is when bane sets every prisoner free ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6tnwhrVkt8&NR=1
They absolutly cannot kill off bats in this one. And I doubt Nolan would try to squeeze a story like knightfall into 1 movie. Im pretty sure that Bane should be ALOT bigger tho. and I miss the wrestling mask, it really showed Banes’ spanish roots. Im glad no tubes and stuff too. maybe they can show Bane using VENOM as an inhaler or something or a pre-fight injection like Barry Bonds before taking the plate…..
Sorta Spoiler. Video of batman and bane fighting

more signs of nolan’s arrogance and his egotistical attitude. instead of hiring a professional fight choreographer he wants to do things his way – make batman look like an 80′s disco fanatic. and you clowns thought i didn’t know wtf i was talking about.
You dont but please list your credentials proving otherwise.
hahaha here we go what’s your rank amongst nolan’s fangirl community ?
look under imdb, he only got consultants for his fight scenes, he didn’t actually hire anyone to do the choreography, hence why the fights in all the batman movies are the same stale bs (and nothing like the batman from the comics or animated shows).
You still did not list YOUR credentials. I wanted to hear your professional opinion on how a fight should choreographed.
have you not read any of the batman comics, or seen any of the batman animated movies/shows. he’s a trained martial artists, a black belt in karate, jujitsu and has also learn the arts of ninjitsu (stealth etc). if you want reference at to how he should move and fight watch superman and batman: public enemies, the way he moves is how batman SHOULD move
P.S i now it may not be the best reference but i really cbf explaining in depth at to how he should move and fight (the movie does a good job at explaining/showing anyways).
Jwalka… I’m sorry… I’m not normally mean… but you don’t think logically at all. So now you want a man to move like a animated cartoon??? Yup, that would fit really well in Nolan’s gritty atmosphere… the point is THAT HIS STYLE feels real, that’s why it’s so successful. If Batman was jumping around like a cartoon character it would be campy… you have know idea what you’re talking about… leave it to the pros. Nolan is popular because he proves time and again how good he is. Also… you try moving like a ninja in the Bat suit… I dare you.
Don’t read the comics except for Batman: Year One, The long Halloween & Dark Victory. I know in those Batman rarely fights. He took out an entire Swat team systematically, interrogated a few mobsters, and fight he did get into were normally one punch knockouts.
As a kid growing up, watch every episode of Batman: TAS, Jutice Leauge and Mask of the Phantasm. In addition have seen Under the Red Hood, both Superman and Batman films, and Gotham Knights. In each of those animations all of Batman’s fights incorporate a lot of flipping, somersaulting over/and around his target and highly exaggerated 15 foot jumps in the air. Furthermore in the comics and animations batman does not wear an armor but some sort of cloth.
Batman may be “trained martial artists, a black belt in karate, jujitsu and has also learn the arts of ninjitsu (stealth etc)” but the comic artist and animators are not. Batman rarely takes a martial arts stance and is frankly more of a brawler gymnast in the animation. His 6 fight with the red schemed ninja girl (can’t remember her name) was the closest to anything that could be done innlive-action.
In the Nolan’s films I believe they are doing a solid job (not the best) at portraying a Batman in a full armor that highly restricts your movements. I do take issue that Nolan uses fast-shot quick editing ala using multiple camera angles in rapid succession to make it look like Batman is exchangingnblows quickly because 1) it give me a headache 2) I can’t really understand the fight scene with out multiple views. I prefer fixed angle fight scenes for the most part but I can see how that can be an issue with when live action Batman suits severely slowers your movement.
As I understand Batman when attacking a group of thugs of 5 or more (in animations Batman usually has to deal with 2 or 3 henchmen at the service of the joker or riddler) he should use guerilla warfare tactics, leaping in and out of the shadows slowly eliminating his targets. In BB he does this in his entrance scene at the docks and against scarecrow at arkham asylum are great examples of fighting. Personally, that is how I like my Batman. A character that attack criminals from the shadows and scares the sh** out of you. An angry vengeful vigilante that breaks bones when subduing criminals and when he finally reveals him self from the darkness and walks towards you, you take a step back and pray to every god swearing you will never do it again. But then he scowls back “SWEAR TO ME” haahaha
I also have issues with the way Batman fights in Nolan’s films, mainly in the hand to hand kind of combat. It doesn’t show me much of his skill as a trained fighter, but all i see is him blocking and hitting without much show of any extra ordinary moves. Also because of that inflexible suit or what the Batman moves too slow, e.g. as in the bar fight in TDK while he was fighting, anybody could have put a bullet in his head, as he was so slow.
Other than that I have not issues.
jayjay…
“Blocking and hitting without much show of any extra ordinary moves” is PRECISELY how martial artists are often able to show just how skillful they actually are. They use economical, seemingly slight movements which, nonetheless, release a great deal of power. I have appreciated that aspect of Batman’s fighting style in the films.
Just my take…
Ignur and Travis, have you ever seen the game Batman: Arkham Asylum?? He has armor and still does flips and crap. That Batman would destroy Nolan’s “realistic” Bats in a fight. I feel like, damn, if a gang of bad guys got lucky with Nolan’s Bat and said “RUSH ‘IM!!” they have a chance of kicking his ass because all he does is elbow and punch people (I don’t think he’s thrown one kick or one flip in any of Nolan’s movies) And Travis when u said try moving like a ninja in the batsuit, its called SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF and SPECIAL EFFECTS.
@CapAmerica Yea i love Arkham Asylum and preordered the Arkham City but I dont believe that Batman fighting mechanics would as a whole. While the tekaedowns are probable (and awesome) the somersaulting and flipping is a stretch. He is wearing tougher clothing but to call it armor is a stretch. You see the tear and wear his costume has half way through the game. To make a film like Arkham Asylum would require as you say to “SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF and SPECIAL EFFECTS.”
More importantly Batman fighting style (as is the ninja way) is to stick to the shadows while taking out large groups systematically and through fear, usually starting with the biggest threat i.e. gun-wielders. A good example would be the TDK Lao snatch and grab.
You really can’t have it both ways. Either you film it closer to Arkham Asylum and suspend belief or you mesh Batman in a realistic world and adapt certain elements to coincide. Im not saying either one is “correct” but simply two seperate translations of a beloved character.
CapAmerica…
I must disagree… (However, I completely agree that Arkham Asylum is a badass game) the fighting style wouldn’t fit in these films. Even with movie magic it’s just completely different style of film making. Like Ignur stated you can’t mesh the two together… It would be awkward as hell watching Bale jump around like an idiot. It looks great in the game but it wouldn’t translate well to the film. I know a thing or two about special effects… I’m an animator and 3D artist so I know how it works and even with the best of the best working on it it’s not the technology that would be lacking it would be the visuals themselves. It doesn’t suit the movies feel. It would look completely silly and out of place. As long as he’s beating on people I’m happy with the style of combat. Hell even in the animated series Bruce looked silly doing martial arts… and that’s when he was dressed for it!!!
My point of the Bat suit is that it’s not easy to move/jump around like a ninja while wearing it in real life (the fact that it happens in a video game isn’t relevant) and even when he’s flipping around in that it doesn’t look natural… besides, this isn’t a video game and Nolan knows that, he knows what he’s doing… it would never look natural or be a good fit for the movie. The fighting is only visual and these movies are as great as they are because of the story and real world adaptation… take that away – forcefully insert all this spectacle dancing ninja stuff and you completely change/destroy it.
Yeah true. That fighting really wouldn’t fit in these Batman films. But if the films were more like a superhero film, it wouldn’t really matter. But even I thought it was a little much in Bman AA when he would leap like 20ft to hit a guy when you perform a combo (Iv’e even seen in game play for Bman Arkham City they toned that down a bit). But what I wish is if these movies were less “realism dependent” it wouldn’t look AS out of place. U still gotta admit he’d whoop Nolan’s Batman lol.
You’re absolutely right, jwalka. Cinematography is exactly the same thing as directing, and fight arrangers, fight directors and fight consultants play no part whatsoever in choreographing fight sequences. David Forman does not exist, and was never hired to work on Batman Begins. Unlike the vastly-overused Keysi Fighting Method, moviegoers have never witnessed karate or jiu jitsu on the big screen before in any shape or form. Justo Dieguez and Andy Norman are perfumed, mincing fops who are regularly bested in close-quarter combat by Christopher Nolan himself. Without even removing his suit jacket. The man is clearly a monster. Completely out of control.

Someone mentioned seeing JGL in one of the pics over on Latino Review and I’m pretty thats him standing directly to the right of Tom Hardy in the first pic
i don’t think i like the idea of bane having a tumbler of his own. and christian bale is taller than tom hardy, so it’s really hard to imagine how they will work it out. but, if there’s one director i trust to deliver, it’s nolan.
thats why your…..*DRUM ROLL*…… THAT guy!
Just wait until the movie comes out and stop b****ing and speculating. Is interesting info and images, but no more. One full year before it hits cinemas and there are alredy people crying. Please. Just enjoy the info. Enjoy the ride. And then we’ll see the end results.
Thank YOU! Smart Man!
This Movie will surpass EPIC…
Say every stupid negative little thing you can that you make up in your silly little mind about it, but im telling you
This is the 2012 movie right here and im glad we get the honor of seeing it before the world comes to and end!
Just sayin….
People, it’s simple. Bane comes to Gotham, causes the prison break, and Batman is left sweating like a French whore in confession. Then, Bane strikes, breaks the Bat, and is left for dead. Gordon is obviously hurt in the process of wrangling up the arkham asylum psychos. In comes Ra’s Al Ghul, who is very much alive by way of the Lazarus Pits, and has been keeping tabs on Bruce Wayne/Batman ever since BB, by way of his trusted spy and daughter Talia. Together, Ra’s and Talia resurrect Batman by using the Lazarus Pit in India, and nurse him and train him to beat Bane and take back Gotham. (Yes, that’s Bruce/Batman climbing up out of the Lazarus Pit in the teaser trailer, and that’s Bruce getting back in shape and preparing for battle in the jail cell under Ra’s tutelage which is the “rises” part of the movies symbolism
So where are you fitting Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman into your plot theory?
Interesting, except for the part about Bruce Wayne being in training under Ra’s al Ghul again, since al Ghul tried to destroy Gotham. If Bruce could get over that, plus the complete destruction of Wayne Manor, then he definitely would have already gotten over his parents’ deaths. In the same vein, how could al Ghul have gotten over his anger at what Bruce did to his home in Tibet and why would even a resurrected al Ghul suddenly find Gotham worth saving? He seemed pretty convinced of its diseased state in BB and the need to do something decisive about it.
Yes, that “rises” is intriguing. After the movie comes out, we’ll kick ourselves for not seeing it earlier, but right now I have no idea what it could signify.
As for the multitude of “leaks,” well, what about the possibility that we’re caught up in the ARG for TDKR and haven’t realized it yet? They wouldn’t do one like the TDK ARG, but it’s likely they would do something. Just a thought.
It seems to me that this will be Batman’s and Bane’s first encounter in which Batman beats the hell out of Bane and then he retreats. He meets Talia who introduces him to the “Venom” which he uses to bulk up and break the bat.
Its also rather weird seeing batman in day light…
it’s probably Day to Night filming. Although breaking the Bat in broad daylight would be big in terms of Gotham Media.
I would guess he is using Day to Night filming. It’s cheaper than to film at night.
All this video coverage and pictures has got me so hyped for this thing! Ive been a huge fan since BB’s and TDK. If your a fan like me, ever since you walked out of that theater viewing TDK years ago, you thought to yourself, “Who will be in the sequel? When where there be a sequel? Will there EVER, be a sequel?”
Well now that time has come. Just seeing Nolan back in that chair, Bale back in that suit, all the speculation on whats going to happen, I cannot wait until this time, a year from now! I am a true fan and love what Nolan has done with this series. I will not let a couple kids rant about Banes suite or mask or any other stupid minor details, ruin my hype for the conclusion of what a wonderful trilogy to go down in comic film history!
Hyped…
True That
Anyone else think that maybe it’s Gordon who gets his back broke prompting Batman to either quit or “rise”?
That is the rumor out there. because it will take too long for the Bat to recover in 1 film so the rumor is Bane breaks Gordon`s Back instead. So the Bat had to COME back and RISE…
What about the healing powers the Lazarus pit????
They can skip time, it is a film after all
Another point to note is that somebody besides Batman, presumably Bane, is driving the new Tumbler. How the heck would Bane have the Batmobile if he didn’t kick the Bat’s a$$ at his own house? The comics have him finding out his true identity, coming to his house, breaking his back and taking him into the Gotham streets, leaving him to die essentially. I’ll bet during Batman’s comeback/rehab, he’ll commandeer the Tumbler to wreak havoc on Gotham. Just speculating of course though, but what better way to stick it to Batman than to steal his own awesome whip and use it for evil purposes.
Well, Marion Cotillard’s character is supposed to be a Wayne Enterprise’s executive; and if it turned out to be true that she is also Talia, then clearly she could have given Bane access to the research and development areas of the company. Also, remember that the League of Shadows had infiltrated every level of Gotham’s infrastructure once before. Who’s to say they still aren’t in hiding?
Also, Bruce Wayne probably would have had multiple tumblers made after the incident in the Dark Knight; so it is feasible that there were extras.
“How the heck would Bane have the Batmobile if he didn’t kick the Bat’s a$$ at his own house?”
He could have taken it from Gordon somehow at the end of BB and repainted it in his own colors.
That would require something along the lines of alternative realities, but this is Christopher Nolan we’re talking about.
I still think there’s only one Tumbler, the one in BB that Fox painted black at Wayne’s request and which then, in TDK, self-destructed, but Gordon has driven the Tumbler before. And Reese has its blueprints. Hmmm….
yup thats what i thought when i saw the teaser
I truly hope not, I think Gordon is a great character and all, but for fans and audiences to really fear Bane, I think he needs to break the Bat. It’s aligned with the comic and it’s much more dramatic than it happening to Gordon. I’m thinking that pretty much anybody could break Gordon’s back. He’s never been promoted as a “strong” guys, but instead loyal, moral, hard-working and clever. The only way I see this working is if it is to simply send a message to Batman and taunt him into coming out of hiding.
I really, really hope that’s not the case. Batman coming back from a debilitating/borderline paralysis injury is much more epic than using Gordon in that role. I want to see Batman overcome all odds to face off with Bane one more time after he is broken. Just my two cents. I’m praying I’m right!
Batman/Bruce Wayne will use the Lazarus Pit to heal his broken back. Mark my words…
That’s way too unrealistic for Nolan’s franchise. Besides, Batman never needed the Lazarus pits to heal his back in the comics.
the where pictures of the lazarus pit maybe for Rha’s uh gul to wake him up form the dead
Before the Batman rises, He will fall. We will definitely see Bane completing The League of Shadows’ aim. Batman will make a come back to fight Bane off. Batman will Rise. That is for certain.
I was at this shooting yesterday and I have quite a few of what seem to be almost identical pics. There was a mass killing too,as shown in the vid above. Dont know exactly what happened since we were so far back but there were bodies strewn everywhere at one point. The prison break scene was def staged like the comic and will be epic to say the least! So ready to see this flick now!
Wasnt that Billy Blathgate that movie where his mentor was Dutch Schwalts!? Dutch Schwalts mentor was that guy who coined the infamous monster phrase (drum roll please) Nothing Personal, Just Business.

I wonder how they’re going to tie in the joker to the league of shadows plan. I remember 2 face wanting to find out who was the man that let the joker off his leash. And then too, joker did mention it was “all part of the plan”
When Two-face said he wanted “the man who let Joker off his leash”, he was refering to Sal Maroni. You know, the guy he was talking to at that moment. It was Maroni and the other mob bosses who hired Joker to take down Batman, and Joker used his mob backings to further his own plan of destroying Gotham for the hell of it. Hence, Two-face blamed Maroni for all that Joker had done (including kill Rachel, in which Joker used Maroni’s own moles in the Gotham PD to accomplish.)
As for what Joker has to do with this movie, it looks like he doesn’t. No, I don’t see any indication that Joker will have an active role in this film.
Just seems too coincidental that the joker comes from nowhere with the sole purpose of breaking the batman’s integrity. Feels like someone had sent him and when he failed they decided to send bane.
