Tom Hardy Joins ‘Batman 3′

Actor Tom Hardy has recently stolen the show in films like Bronson and Inception, and apparently director Chris Nolan was impressed with Hardy’s work in Inception, because he will apparently be working with the young up-and-coming leading man again in Batman 3, which is scheduled to begin shooting next year.

As the fates would have it, Hardy has time on his hands to shoot Batman 3, now that his lead role as Mad Max in Fury Road is in limbo, ever since production on that film stalled.

So on to the big question everyone will be wondering: who is Hardy going to play?

Well according to Deadline‘s brief report, Nolan has set Hardy up for a “lead role in the next Batman film.” Warner Bros. is keeping quiet about whether that role is a villain, but it’s undoubtedly the connection that most fans are immediately going to make. So let’s discuss.

Hardy is probably one of my favorite young Hollywood leading men, well beyond the likes of Chris Pine or Sam Worthington. Hardy was phenomenal in Bronson and managed to steal scenes from his highly-regarded co-stars in Inception (Leo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt). I say all that to say: In my opinion it’s not so much about which villain role Hardy is given, it’s more about the fact that the role will benefit greatly from the talent of Tom Hardy.

batman villains Tom Hardy Joins Batman 3

Just to get the discussion going, I could see Hardy as any ONE of the following villains:

  • The Riddler
  • The Penguin
  • Black Mask
  • Killer Croc
  • Bane
  • Victor Freeze
  • The Clock King
  • Count Vertigo
  • Clayface
  • Catwoman (joking, joking)

Whichever villain is THE villain we ultimately see Hardy playing (if indeed it’s a villain), I know he’ll bring equal bits menace, charm and wit to the performance. I have no doubt that Chris Nolan has once again picked an actor who has the potential to make his villain truly iconic and awesome. I couldn’t be happier with this news.

Stay tuned because this story is only just breaking and there are bound to be twists, turns and updates coming shortly.

In the meantime, Hardy will next star in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and McG’s This Means War alongside Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon.

For now, how do you feel about Hardy in Batman 3?

  1. Black Mask and Hush sound like the most obvious choices. They could both become the new mob boss and reflect Batman/Bruce’s fall… As a result Catwoman, Harley and Talia all sound like well fits too to the theme of Batman’s comeback

  2. Maybe Chris nolan would give the role of The Riddler to Tom Hardy or Michael C. Hall and The Role of Roman Sionis/The Black Mask to Christian Slater or Dommic West
and The Role of Talia Al Ghoul to cathrine zeta Jones or Kate Beckinsale and maybe some Villain Cameos outside Arkham Such as David Tennant or Sharlto Copley as The Mad Hatter and Wentworth Miller as Firefly,Joseph gordon Levitt as The Scarecrow,Jean Reno as Dr Hugo Strange,Matt Dillon or Eric Bana as Thomas Eliot/Hush,John Lithgow as Arnold Wesker/The Ventriloquist and Robin Willaims as Scarface,John Hamm as Bizarro Batman.

  3. well as it’s no longer the riddler. why does he have to be a villain?

    i’m thinking Robin??!?!?!?!

  4. I would have to say that I see Tom Hardy as Temple Fuget. He fits the profile nicely for an English-man obsessed with time.

  5. Regarding the Freeze conversation, I dont really understand how anyone could ever say that there was anything ever redeeming about schumachers’ attempts to mount a decent batman movie. He destroyed one of the biggest pop culture franchises, forcing it to reboot some years later and he misused EVERY character. Short list…Robin, Batgirl, BANE (possibly his biggest faux pas), Riddler, Two face, Freeze… wow thats every main character he touched. Id rather have seen Tim Burton continue directing and kill every villain to end his movies just to wrap up a happy hollywood ending. Furthermore, I love arnold, but he was literally the worst choice for the role. Steven hawking could pull it off better. How about someone like christopher lloyd? If you remember him as judge doom in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”. He could easily slip into the role with the cold look and monotone delivery he utilized there. Patrick stewart would be better for crying out loud.

As far as DKR… I think we are looking at Black Mask… maybe deadshot. I dont know how many villains they are planning on. I heard they have 2 female roles, one for talia al ghul and vicky vale. Not sure if talia is supposed to be the second villain or what. Maybe black mask and deadshot. That would make me happy.

And for the riddler conversation… thats a tough one. who could really make that role their own? Jake gyllenhall? Now that his sister is out we wont have to look at both of their unsettling faces in the same film… so thats good. I dont know. I think id rather see Phillip seymore hoffman as the penguin, but nolan will never do it.

With all due respect, Schumacher deserves half of the blame for what became the end of the previous franchise. But it was Warner Bros. idea to make the franchise Family Friendly in the first place starting with Batman Forever. Im surprised Tim Burton stayed on as producer, even that film was darker than Batman & Robin. I even read if it was Burton’s film, Riddler would of been the only villain in the 3rd film but Schumacher added Two-face since he was directing. As for Arnold I thought he would still be a good Mr. Freeze IF givin better dialogue in the script, which none of the cast had & all were displeased with afterwards.

  6. well if Mr. Freeze was going to be in a Nolan’s Batman film why not Alan Rickman after all he pulls off Villains rather fantastically such as Hans Gruber on Die Hard and The Sheriff of Nottingham on Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves and Severus Snape on The Harry Potter film franchise and
Judge Turpin on Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and in case of tragic roles he starred as Harry on Love Actually. my second choice would be Christoph Waltz [Just look at Inglorious Bastards,The Green Hornet,Water For Elephants], bill nighy (Viktor in Underworld)and Bruce wills those are my choices for Mr Freeze
