batman 3 and superman release dates Superman & Batman 3 Release Dates in 2012 [Updated]

What is the plan for the Superman reboot and Batman 3? On Wednesday the news broke that Warner Bros. had inked a major 20-film deal with IMAX to release most of their upcoming tentpole films over the foreseeable future in the large screen format. This deal included the major DC movies Batman 3 and Superman but it did not detail what potential release schedule they might follow.

Shortly after, our friends at IESB reported that – according to their sources – the next Superman film might be releasing in Christmas of 2012, the same year speculation places Batman 3 opening (likely in the summer).

[Update: When I said "likely in the summer," I didn't expect confirmation that it's true only a few hours later. Production Weekly has confirmed that Warner Bros. is planning to release Batman 3 on July 20, 2012.]

As we know, Christopher Nolan is working on both films, directing Batman 3 and overseeing Superman. Rumors also point to his involvement, possibly as director, for a Justice League movie which could see his versions of the caped crusader and Kal-El join together with DC Comics’ other major heroes in an epic team-up movie.

Nothing is official on any of these fronts but we can expect some official announcement regarding Batman 3 at Comic-Con as well as some more information (and hopeful) confirmation of  Justice League movie as well.

On the topic of how these films can work together in the same universe when they’re built as separate and isolated stories, IESB continues to explain that they’re being told there’s a specific order and chronology to how their films are and will be released going forward which could allow their future DC movies to cross-populate and lead-in to team-up stories down the road.

Behind the scenes, Batman Begins is apparently being referred to as “Action Comics #1″ with The Dark Knight being #2, Green Lantern as #3 and so on and so forth. What this means is that when the first two Batman films took place, Bruce Wayne was the only known hero and Green Lantern and Superman didn’t exist (yet).

That way, when Green Lantern comes out, it could include a reference to Batman or Gotham City to acknowledge that it exists and this could continue in Batman 3 with hints to other heroes. They could continue the links with the Superman reboot and start to do what Marvel Studios is doing with their roster of Avengers characters.

Batman could become to Justice League what Iron Man is to The Avengers in that they’re the first (and only) heroes when they started who are publicly known in their universes. Since any potential Justice League is years away, once Nolan is done with the Batman trilogy and lending a hand for Superman, he could take on Justice League, assuming that he’s game for bringing all these characters together.

We can expect to find out more from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns this summer at San Diego Comic-Con and we’ll have a team there live to let you know as it happens.

What do you think of the future of DC movies?

  1. I don't need a Justice League movie. But I'd kill for a Batman/Superman film. The two complement each other better than any other team-up out there.

  2. I'm going to quote the man from the 2nd Superman movie: “This is gonna be good!”. :-) Marvel and DC duking it out to see who can come up with the best comic to movie; “It has begun!”.

  3. You know Wepz, you'd be the perfect soldier if you just kept your mouth shut. :-)

  4. To quote Flounder from Animal House”Oh boy this is going to be great”.:p

  5. Yay! I'm so excited that there is finally a schedule foe the Superman reboot! OMG, can't wait to see it! They better do this right and start fresh.

I don't care about Batman 3 since we all knew it was going to come out, of course I will go see it, but for me, Superman steals the spotlight once again! So excited to see how they do this. They better not let me down again like they did with SR.

But with Nolan overlooking I'm a bit confident it'll be good. We all know Bale is playing his last role as Batman in this film since he refuses to do crossovers since, he's not a team player – not like we need him anyway! Bring in an actor who can not only play an excellent Batman but who can also play a good Bruce Wayne at the same time!!! Can't wait til 2012!!!

  6. I find it sort of ironic that it is possible that in both the Marvel and DC movie universes the first superheroes are human. Then come the super-powered guys. Kinda backwards, don't you think? It seems that there would be Super-powered folks starting this whole hero schtick and then the average joe (or billionaire playboy) might join up after the superhero trail has been blazed a little.

  7. I think DC and Marvel were always in a competition. But what I wanted to say is, that DC kinda “copies” Marvel with their movie universe by setting the movie characters in ine universe alá Marvel´s Avengers thing. I don´t know if that´s a good thing. Nolans Batman movies worked very well as a stand alone franchise. I just don´t see Christian Bale in one movie together with Superman or whoever is in the Justice League.

  8. Great. Nolan taking US film productions overseas yet again. Way to go.

  9. Always want to see my favorit legend return to the theatre.

  10. Well it is official. We know how the world will end now. It has been long foreseen that the world will end in Dec 2012. So that means that they will put out another Superman with Lex trying to take over the world with a big green rock. Then all the fanboy's like myself will just start shooting. Start buying your ammo now boys. Put in some real practice time (that doesn't include playing Modern Warfare 2.), and get ready to be pissed. The best we could really hope for is for him to put the big green rock in Meta-lo. But they will probably screw that up by making Meta-lo a 500 foot, green fire breathing robot.

  11. I think sum simple camos would be a ad for Ferris air(the company Hal Jordan works for)in a copy of the Daily Planet on Bruce's desk or Hal watching batan fight while reading a superman comic

  12. This whole franchise is getting bogged down in boring mediocrity. The last Superman film was just sad…and on TV “Smallville” jumped the shark years ago, but like the films, jus keeps muddling along. The Keaton Batman was better than any of them and the following animated series was better to watch.

  13. Okay so in reference to the conversations on this page about Superman's rights.. Is there a possibility that we might see the Siegal family doing a deal with Marvel Comics and we could see Superman make appearances for Marvel Comics?

Just my imagination going wild it seems but as we all are seeing stranger things have happened. Who would have thought that DC would be loosing the rights to Superman? What about that Captain America situation with Marvel? And then on the horizon looms the Kirby Family!!– So who knows- maybe Marvel could think outside the box and do something special bringing the Superman Franchise on Board the Marvel Universe for a little while!! That would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't it???

    • I’m liking your ideas!!!

  14. I’m happy to be hearing a few more definitive news tidbits (and positive ones, at that!) coming out…

Actually, it makes perfect sense that human heroes would emerge first. Yes, many mythologies have deities, but they tend to remain somewhat removed from the greater portion of humanity. Heroes, on the other hand, tend to start out relatively normally (MAYBE with more determinatiion, imagination, luck, financial or physical resources, and/or intelligence) and take on mythical or legenday stature as time passes. Even in comic books, “super” heroes were first imagined as normal/mortal men (and, later, the occasional woman)…for example: The Phantom, The Shadow, The Lone Ranger, Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, or any of the countless “mystery men” and other genre/pulp heroes who fired up imaginations before Superman ever decided to lift a criminal’s car on the cover of the $1 million Action Comics #1. Even the Justice Society (though it DID have some “extranormal” members) contained a preponderance of humans with fighting skills and gimmicky tech.

…ummm, you realize that MANY directors do this…because it’s cheaper or even because certain looks or atmospheres are more readily available in other countries. “Star Wars” was filmed in a desert half a world away and on a London sound stage! Oddly, though Nolan is (I believe) British, his Gotham City is Chicago, while many American-born directors, in fact go out of country for their productions. It’s that whole “I only buy American, though I’m hard-pressed to find something, nowadays, that does not at least contain a COMPONENT that was foreign-made)” argument all over again…It just doesn’t work in the modern world…unless you live in the boondocks.

  15. I want someone else to play Bruce Wayne in the next Batman movie.

  16. I got it
    green lantern 2011
    batman3 2012
    superman 2012
    flash 2012/2013
    wonderwoman 2013
    aquaman 2013/early 2014
    Justice League summer 2014

  17. I think this is great news, I just hope they use a great villain, Braniac or Bizzaro, too soon for Doomsday yet.

  18. So he’s DC is ignoring the fact that Superman was the first superhero and inspired everyone else…

  19. Tom Welling is the top choice of the people all around the world, he’s dominating every poll @ the web.

  20. well i totally agree, they Should use brainiac… If they use back lex for villan AGAIN They are gonna loose and it wud be another lame and wasted movie. Superman is my favourite hero plz dont let me reconsider

  21. Both look good! Can’t wait!

  22. TOM WELLING would be great in this movie! Here is a great actor who I see playing SUPERMAN! 10 years on SMALLVILLE and a comic book in his image! He is that SUPIE guy.
