Director Christopher Nolan’s latest film Inception opens next Friday but fans have already worked up a ravenous appetite for information on his next project – Batman 3.
While the deliberately vague filmmaker always seems to know a great deal more than he’s letting on, he has revealed a few tidbits regarding his next trip into Gotham City. We know that the Joker won’t be appearing in the latest installment, the Scarecrow might, the film could be in 3D, and Nolan’s brother Jonah has been hard at work on the script for some time. Today, we’ve received a new tidbit of information hinting at an updated start date for production.
“I think they’re going to do it in April, that’s about as much as I know.”
The exact same thing happened back in 2007 with The Dark Knight when its proposed March start date was pushed back to April instead. According to The Playlist, the actors already on board for Batman 3 have been instructed to keep spring 2011 clear.
We also know that Nolan & Co. are working backwards from their July 20th 2012 release date, and given that The Dark Knight followed a similar timeline, this makes a lot of sense.

I was in Chicago during The Dark Knight‘s production and, if I remember correctly, they were here for one week in late April to shoot the opening bank robbery scene and then returned at the beginning of June with a full cast and crew. Nolan did a similar “pre-shoot” on Batman Begins so I can’t help but wonder if a similar strategy is being utilized for Batman 3.
Now that Inception is behind him, Nolan can shift focus to Batman 3 as well as the Superman reboot The Man of Steel. Perhaps that means we can look forward to more detailed information soon on both projects (including what Batman 3 might be about). While fans are anxious to hear a confirmation of who the villain (or villains) will be, Batman’s biggest opponent might be audience’s inflated expectations – after the mammoth success of The Dark Knight.

While cinematic history is littered with more abysmal third chapters than good ones, Nolan’s desire to make Batman 3 a conclusion to this particular bat-story, rather than another continuation, seems like the right move. Undoubtedly, there will be more Batman movies, but starting with a foundation (a foundation centered on wrapping things up in Nolan’s universe), seems like a good place to start with Batman 3.
Are you excited to hear that plans are finally firming up for Batman 3? What are you hoping to see in the film?

I am hoping to see, Scarecrow again, and Black Mask, also bring back the mob, just because the Joker and Falconi are going does not mean that the mob just disappeared. I don’t want to see Batman “retire” because no city is ever devoid of crime.
you can call me old fashion as i see so many people wanting to see black mask and baine but i really would love to see the riddler and catwoman and penguin because i kind of want to see how christopher nolan would interpret them and what they would look like in the movies like how they changed the joker’s look. although i think it would be exciting if he used black mask or baine if he decides to make a sequel after it which i heard he might not do but i’m excited!
Nolan has brought DC Comics back to he big screen. He kicked it off with Batman Begins. Here’s hoping Green Lantern does well, Man of Steel gets officially off the ground, Wonder Woman and Flash films get pitched… I want a Justice League movie. The Avengers are already too far ahead. We neeeeeeeed JLA on the silver screen!
I would like to see Black Mask and Bain as I’ve stated before. Black Mask is a great bad guy that fits perfect in to Nolan’s world and he hasn’t been on film yet. Bain has been horribly misused once and deserves a shot at redemption being that he is the man who broke the bat.
I would love to see a similar story to Knighfall with a lot of obvious creative liberties. Have Batman be severely injured, but not crippled and he doesn’t need to find a replacement he just has to mentally and physically rebuild him self and prepare for Bain. I’d love to see Bain still do the Arkham break out to wear Batman down.
I also don’t think Bruce needs to quit or die. The Nolan verse can end with out that happening. Just have all the loose story threads close up and end with Batman more resolved than ever to continue his mission. Truly believing that what he is doing is the right thing. Just make sure there are no open story threads and no ending cliff hanger or hype button like the Joker card at the end of Begins.
I cannot remember Black mask what type of violin or anti-hero perhaps was he or was he counter weight to batman in the past? but i agree with you bane would be cool as nemesis..but it would seem bland to bring in villains we pretty much tire of s=ucas riddler ..i never consider catwoamn as villains much as someone cut in a wired situation, but i could deal with catwoman however this being batman’s early years she doesn’t quite fit the time line.
Black Mask is a crazy mob boss. He made a Skull mask of his mom’s coffin. He is basically a mob boss, but also a crazy serial murderer. He kills cold and with out thought. When he isn’t a Mob boss he is forming cults and leading them through the streets killing people. He lead the false face society for a long time.
Bane would most certainly fit Brandon doesn’t know what he is taking about,,And in reality stars guys who have freaked out and killed their own families from experimental “Roid use”it is called roid rage now imagine a killer who could turn the on or off Voila you have “Bane what more could you ask for? I cannot remember Black mask what type of violin or anti-hero perhaps was he or was he counter weight to batman in the past? but i agree with you bane would be cool as nemesis..but it would seem bland to bring in villains we pretty much tire of such as riddler ..i never consider catwoamn as villains much as someone cut in a wired situation, but i could deal with catwoman however this being batman’s early years she doesn’t quite fit the time line.As far going straight tO bat man beyond ..noway not yet we need this story to conclude first and yea Eastwood would be a perfect old”Bats” just watch Gran Torino and you can see a bitter burned out old “bats”
villan not violin
All I’m hoping for is Wayne Manor and the Batcave to come back. Also hoping for a scene at his parents’ grave.
I agree on all accounts DRM we need Wayne Manor a bat cave and a classic scene visiting his parents. I really felt that all three were missing from TDK.

On a side note Vic I’m having trouble posting from my phone it is constantly telling me my post is to short even after I add to it. I have to type two paragraphs to get a post.
I agree DRM we need all three. I felt Wayne Manor and The Batcave should of been in TDK at least a little bit of rebuilding shown to reassure us it would of been in this new one. Also Batman needs to visit his parents it’s classic stuff from the comics.
Side note Vic I can’t seem to post from my phone anymore no matter how much I type it says maybe my comment is to short. I had like 3 paragraphs on there and it wouldn’t let me.
Daniel F,
What kind of phone? Mobile version of the site or standard?
Thanks,
Vic
Iphone and Mobile
It seems as though some of the time when it tells me it’s to short and can’t post that it does it anyway. I said something and it told me it was to short to post so when I got home I got on my computer looked on here and saw that it posted. Weird.
iPhone and mobile version seems to be working now though but it will work and not work at random not sure why.
This movie will be good, its Nolan’s Batman. Will it be as good as TDK? Who knows? As for villains, I think that a great ending would be the return if Ra’s Al Ghul and bring in Tahlia. End it with how it began.
I don’t believe one word that comes out of Caine’s mouth regarding Batman. Didn’t he say something about Depp being Riddler and Hoffman being Penguin? Ya that’s not happening.
I know I’m probably in a small minority but after this third movie I would really like to see the next one to be about Batman Beyond. For those of you who don;t know about this series it is set in the future where Batman has gotten old and retired from crime fighting and gradually Gotham returns to being a crime ridden hell hole. So batman decides to train a new protege to take on the cowl, a highschooler called Terry McGinnis. I just think it would be a good idea because it would keep batman fresh by providing a new scenario with different material. Of course I realize that this idea could also backfire because many people are not familiar with Batman Beyond and could just feel alienated by it. One can dream though one can dream.
I really want to see Clint Eastwood as an old Batman, whether it’s BatmanBeyond or …Kingdom Come. I think would also make an awesome movie. I doubt it will ever happen though.
I’ve always thought if they did a movie of it Clint would be perfect
now THAT would kick ass, having good ol’ Clint as an old batman
I dont think bane would fit in nolans batman movies… i think that riddler and penguin would be perfect for it, the mob would be obvious. how about catwoman?…halle berry’s version sucked… nolan could pull it off. bane just wouldnt fit… Dr. Harleen Quinnzel would be OK… but Victor Zsasz? now he would be a perfect fit for nolans batman… if you not famillar with him, hes a “common” serial killer who tallies the number of victims into his arm… that would be perfect for nolan…
How would Bain not fit ? A really muscular Steroid freak? Like that’s not realistic lol. This Batman needs a real physical challenge finally that’s what Nolan has been lacking. Batman hasn’t gotten a real physical challenge. Bain would also be a great mental challenge. He doesn’t have to be unrealistically huge like in the comics. NO one fits in to Nolans world as they appear in the comics he’s adapted everything to his world. That wasn’t how Joker was in the comice not exactly Nolan changed things just like he would with Bain.
I do not want to see Riddler, Penguin or especially Catwoman. We have seen them all way to many times lets get something we haven’t seen to often.
Zsasz is not a main bill villain he can not hold up a film all by him self he is not a villain with a strong enough presence. I don’t think I could watch a film with him as the lead or even second lead villain. He can only pull off background.
Harley only works with The Joker nuff said.
You want him to have a real physical challenge? Just being Batman IS a physical challenge within itself. But he just makes it look to easy for everyone I guess.
It’s BANE not Bain.
You say you don’t want to see Riddler, Penguin or especially Catwoman. Yet, you say, “NO one fits in to Nolans world as they appear in the comics he’s adapted everything to his world. That wasn’t how Joker was in the comice not exactly Nolan changed things just like he would with Bain.”
So why wouldn’t you want to see how Nolan interprets these characters if you’ve seen how well he pulled it off with Joker? You must accept how well he interpreted the character that was ALREADY shown previously in Burton’s film, so why wouldn’t you want another interpretation of a different one? Certainly you can’t be satisfied with Carrey’s god awful Riddler. I’m sure not.
If you just want Nolan to really cater to the dumb audience that love seeing an almost “Hulk smash” mentality to things then by all means let’s get Bane. But if Nolan where to do that; which I highly doubt given his approach to his movies, I’d rather see Croc.
Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman have been done to death from the 60′s shows the 90′s movies the animated series and every other incarnation of Batman. Bane has had one appearance and it was horrible and unjust.
Hulk smash mentality? Do you know anything about the character at all? Bane not only mentally but physically challenged Batman to near death. Bane was one of Batman’s most intelligent bad guys to ever appear in the comics. Bane has only appeared in one Batman live action incarnation and it was the worst representation of a character ever. He is a great character that deserves justice.
I apologize for the misspelling I was staring at something earlier that said Bain and it got stuck in my head.
the 60′s and 90′s? you do realize that the joker was done the same ammount, even more so? and although i dont think that bane could pull it off, i do think that nolan could pull bane off… and mentioning nolan, Victor Zsasz would fit right in with nolans dark and gritty version, not a main villian, but a second. bane though? a steroid freak? i dont think that he would fit in at all… nolan doesnt do the action like if bane was in it, instead he creates the action with his imagination and uses the mind as a weapon. bane doesnt have the mind of joker riddler or penguin, neither does victor zsasz though, but shows more then bane ever did. but the ammount of insanity he brings would be epic… bane has the hulk smash attitude and lacks the intellegence and character that nolan looks for in his villians… you can relate with raz al ghul, and two face had the human side. bane has hulk smash and tiny little brain to back it up…
I know how often Joker has been used, but I don’t see how that is relevant to Batman 3 villains.
It’s ok if you don’t know anything at all about the character, but don’t pretend like you do. Aside from Raas Bane is one of Batman’s most intelligent villains. Bane was incredibly smart he is not of a simple Hulk smash attitude. I have no problem with you not knowing everything, but seriously don’t pretend as if you do. THe simple truth is that Bane is far more intelligent than Joker or Penguin.
I highly recommend that you read the Knightfall story. Bane out smarts Batman at nearly every turn. He figures out Batman’s identity with is incredible intelligence. He uses his mind to figure out Batman’s identity, destroy his spirit, and break him down. Bane did more damage to Batman before he ever even touched him.
Well put Daniel. You are correct on all counts and to Brandon, you need to brush up on your comic history. As for Bane I for one would like to see him more accurately depicted as being born in a prison and coming into his own. Hush would be sweet and I think killer croc would be nice but not in the nolanverse, maybe in the reboot.
This is my first post but I have been on here now and a again and I just wanna say this is an awesome site. Well done and great community.
Zsasz was in “Batman Begins” as one of the Arkham inmates. He looked “ordinary”, except that he was multiply cut. I agree he would never pull off main villain status…interesting supporting character though.
he was in batman begins? i didnt know that… and he brings alot to the table too… but not as a main villian, no, i never said that… but a good solid second…
I would love to see Catwoman as one of the villains. I think they portrayed that character with a lot of respect to the origins of her back in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. I didn’t care too much of Halle Berry’s version, but I think it would add a cool element to the movie.
I don’t know if Burton’s version of Catwoman was particularly respectful to the character’s comic book origin… but she was certainly the best part of Batman Returns. =-)
Mobile version and it’s on my iPhone. It’s random but seems to be getting worse today havnt been able to post at all
That happens to me too Daniel F!!!!!!! Glad im not the only one lol!! I thought it was just me……itll take awhile to post but at least it’s gonna post:,)
Are you excited to hear that plans are finally firming up for Batman 3? What are you hoping to see in the film?
That’s the question people, lets remember what we’re replying to. Yes, I am excited to hear schedules being talked about for Batman 3.
I’m hoping to see an original yet mind blowing version of some Batman villains. What a lot of people forgot about Nolan’s movies is that he doesn’t change the characters like other directors and studios have been doing. What he gives us are fully realized people that maintain the original comic book mythos.
Worthing I love Nolan’s batman, but yes he has changed the characters. Nolan has made just as many if not more changes as any other director however the film was still good despite those changes. That’s the difference. He didn’t change Batman much other than adding in Racheal which did change him a bit still other than that he was very similar. Gordon, Joker and Raas were all changed alot as were Harvey Dent and a few other characters. Nolan has made probably more changes than anyone and any avid Batman comic reader would know that.
I’m not faulting you for not being a hardcore reading or for not knowing this, but it’s better to check your info before you post something inaccurate.
That said Nolan’s films are great and some of the changes bother me, but for the most part they work well. The changes that bother me the most are small changes to appearance and things like that. Some of his big major changes really don’t hurt the story at all and seemed to work perfect. It’s odd but the changes that hurt the film the most for me are the little ones lol.
Now i really cant comment ill be lucky if this goes in….:(
Sorry if i repeat myself but now my comments wont even go in no matter what…….guess i wont be able to comment:(
Ricky18,
Sigh. ALL of your comments appear on the site eventually. I’ve explained they’re going into the spam folder, which I check multiple times per day and I fish out falsely flagged comments and publish them.
You don’t have to submit multiples nor say “I’ll be lucky if this posts” because EVERY one of your comments has ended up live on the site. I’m still working on figuring out why that’s happening not only to you but to some other folks as well.
You also never replied to my question asking why my email to you at the address you use to comment, bounced.
Vic
Vic,
that email is for my fathers email, not mine see im 18 and have no computer so i used his email so i have no idea y it bounced……ill have to ask him…… But wen i comment, the first time i do it wont go in,i have to do it a second time cuz last comment i checked it was the second comment i put in not the first so im going to publish this twice and if it only appears one time that means that i have to publish all my comments twice to ensure it goes in…..allright?!?
Ricky18,
No, you don’t have to enter your comments twice. Just submit once.
Vic
Well, here’s where Batman get difficult.
Batman has the most interesting villain in comic book history–Joker–and after that, his villains are incredibly lame. Bane is a great villain, but he doesn’t fit into Nolan universe. Nolan doesn’t like supernatural powers, which is why I’m not a fan of him handling my boy Supes. Bane’s muscles expand and retract in a matter of seconds.
Catwoman is lame. She can be a secondary villain, but she can’t carry the story. And for all that is good, do not use Megan Fox as Catwoman. Megan Fox is the new kiss of death.
Penguin? Awful!
Riddler, worst! The only way the Riddler could work is if Nolan makes him a Batman obsessed sociopath. The best way I can see him interpreting Riddler is to emulate Robin William’s Sy character from One hour Photo.
I wish Nolan could release his Superman story, I’ve wanted to see how he plans to portray the man of steel.
Umm Bane isn’t supernatural at all. Bane is hooked up to a steroid type drug called venom that increases his strength at will. Have you noticed how much Nolan has changed to make things fit in the world that he wants? All he has to do is make Bane a steroid addict full of strength and very intelligent. At the end of the day to make Bane right you just need a very brilliant strategic mind full of strength and an addiction to a powerful substance.
I can’t walk down the street and see a person do what Bane does, therefore it’s not natural.
Bane would be sweet, but again, Nolan already ruled out Clayface and Ivy because their powers weren’t plausible in the real world and Bane can fit into that classification. I hope he picks Bane. I would hate to see a Riddler or Penguin movie.
Dude, black mask totally awesome villain, fits perfectly with the whole “better class of criminal theme”. pLus he’s never appeared on screen
Got it Vic;.) now the page is different on my ipod,it looks like wat it would look if i was on computer…..it takes longer to load but i like it;.) do u know wat i mean?!?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh my comment went in so quickly thanks Vic;.)!!!!!!!!
And now they dont even with the unmobile version…….:,(
i totally am in agreement with Daniel F..
Alex needs a diaper change and ba ba! lol!
Welcome Cyborg;.) yeah i love screenrant;.)
dark knight ended with batman on the run…
suppose they caught him and put him in arkham asylum?
he could meet up with quite the array of villain types and possibly escape with someone interesting after leaning of some inside plot against the city….so, what if?
Hmm…
Batman gets caught? Doesn’t that diminish he legacy? And wouldn’t Gotham then know his secret identity?
Roger u just gave me an idea;) itd be really cool if that happened, and that theres a new villain out in Gotham city so batman tries to escape Arkham but cant so he gets help and he escapes with that other person and that other person becomes a villain…..so therell be 2 villains….but which 2?!?
Bane doesn’t need to be a part of Nolan’s universe. Period. How is he one of Batman’s most intelligent villains?! Did you see what The Joker did to Gotham in “The Dark Knight”? Can Bane even speak in full sentences?
My vote is for Riddler or Black Mask. Especially Black Mask because he hasn’t been onscreen ever… Or at least not in a movie.
Riddler would be good too if they got Depp onboard.
“I am Bane-and i could kill you…but death would only end your agony-and silence your shame. Instead i will simply Break YOU!”
thats all i gotta say to why bane is an awesome villain
p.s people have to understand that how Schumacher portrayed Bane was completely wrong
have to agree with you on Black Mask, my vote is no with the riddler doesn’t fit in the universe
Twisted you clearly don’t read Batman comics. Bane did far worse to Gotham than what the Joker did in TDK. Yes Bane speaks full sentences he also reads. He also figured out Batmans identity long before Riddler and it only took him weeks. He outsmarted Batman until he finally broke Batmans back. Bane is far more intellegent than most of the bad guys.
