Christopher Nolan’s upcoming dramatic thriller Inception is a little over a month away, but the buzz on the director’s next project is already heating up.
Today, we’re hearing rumors of a possible start date for Batman 3 filming – March 2011. At first glance, that might seem a bit quick for the follow-up to one of the highest grossing, and most critically acclaimed films, in recent history – but, a March 2011 start date would actually give the Batman sequel plenty of room for its proposed July 20, 2012 release.
The word comes from a recent comment made by LA Times columnist Geoff Boucher, while prepping his readers for an upcoming interview with Nolan:
“On Saturday at the Hero Complex Film Festival, we’ll hear Christopher Nolan discuss his filmmaking accomplishments between our screenings of the underrated 2002 thriller “Insomnia” and billion-dollar blockbuster “The Dark Knight,” but don’t think that the discussion won’t be forward-looking as well — the future looks fascinating for this 39-year-old auteur, and I plan to ask him about the third Batman film, which starts shooting in March, and his plans to produce a Superman revival with his partner and wife, Emma Thomas.”
Of course the knee-jerk line in question, “I plan to ask him about the third Batman film, which starts shooting in March” certainly provides room for plenty of speculation – Did Boucher get a Batman 3 scoop while prepping for the Hero Complex Film Festival interview? Was Boucher misinformed? Is Boucher, in fact, Batman himself?

With industry readers and pundits descending on the comment like starved jackals, it’s interesting to note that the article hasn’t been updated, taken down, or clarified – leading some to speculate that the comment has no substance or, more importantly, an official start-date will be announced shortly (maybe by Nolan at the Hero Complex Film Festival).
Filming for Batman Begins started in March 2004, with the film releasing June 15th 2005. Similarly, shooting for the Dark Knight was expected to begin in March 2007 but was later pushed to April, with the film arriving on July 18th 2008. So, the rumor does appear to have some grounding, based on Nolan’s past scheduling.

That said, it’s unclear how a similar bat-time-line could be affected by Nolan’s work on the upcoming Superman reboot The Man of Steel, which is also slated for a holiday 2012 release. Nolan is listed as a producer on the film – so he’ll at least be somewhat involved in the day-to-day development process of bringing one of the most iconic comic book characters in the world to the big screen – following a poorly received 2006 reboot.
For the time being, we’ll just have to wait for more official announcements – we’re looking at you San Diego Comic Con.
What do you think about a March 2011 shooting start? What are you hoping to see in Batman 3?
Batman 3 is scheduled for a July 20th 2012 release.

Superman Returns was in 2006 not 2004, but good article.
Good catch
Why are you calling it “Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3″ when he hasn’t confirmed he will be directing yet?
I can’t wait for this movie.
because he’s producing, not directing
Would love to see a new Batman AND Superman film in 2012. That will be a year fans of superhero comic movies will be in ecstasy. Isn’t Avengers coming out that year as well??
Yup, I believe it is! Ecstasy is the right description for that year. =]
Don’t forget the new Star trek movie too, 2012 can be a crazy year
If the world does end in 2012, I will go happy
Mee Too!!
They said that in 1999, but if it’s actually going down then maybe they’ll sell the movies like 3 days after theater release.
That’d be a nice end of the world thing:)
The world can’t end in 2012… my can of tuna doesn’t expire til 2014
Hahaha! Me too Jess! And I’d like to see action and a great story with great actors. That’s all Lol!!!
Lol I had already assumed this was the date lol. Not really big news since we already know the release date. There is bigger Batman news / rumors right that oddly enough seem to have been ignored by u guys.
Thanks for the warning, Batman3 viral, has begun,,,
So what I’ve learned from this post is that it will last up to the summer of 2011…

The site will more then likely contain an image of some burnt up car tires?
It will stay that way for three months while the social sites, twitter, inyourFacebook, will blather on endlessly about what it could mean?
Unexpectedly (late on the East Coast), the photo will change into a close up of the new looking Batmobile in action,”THE FANS GO CRAZY AT THIS POINT!!!” Even though its just like close up of the left front panel.

Site reaches critical until it then crashes… Or did it??
The image then shows a cryptic burning tire with the Batman logo on the rim,,,,
THE FANS GO CRAZY!!!!
And this crap just continues to pollute the blogosphere for months. By the time the film opens you already know half, if not all of the plot, characters, and alternate endings.
Lame I hate the Batman viral S-storm that’s no doubt about to hit my firewall.
That’s probably a pretty good assessment of the situation for the next 2 years..At least Kofi will have lots of fodder for those speculative articles he is so fond of!!
omg i still cant believe its coming out right on my birthday
Oh, filming begins sunner 2011,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,?
Nevermind……
I just wish they announce the movies title already!!!!
March 2011 sounds about right. Im just waiting on what villian is going to be announced. Catwoman, firefly, clayface,mr.freeze would all be good. I hope he also gets a new batsuit.
Let the boring, badly put together action scenes begin! Sorry, Batman Begins and Dark Knight are just over-hyped rubbish.
Anyone know of any plans to filme it in 3D?
please god no batman in 3d or any superhero for that matter
YES
They should definitely film it in 3D. If you don’t like 3D, you can watch the 2D version. If you like 3D, you can watch it in real 3D rather than converted 3D. Everybody wins completely. The 3D-fans get a treat and the 3D-haters don’t lose anything. I don’t understand why this issue is still controversial.
Sorry to break the news to you Ralph but your wrong.
Yes he is. Very wrong
I do hope this is Nolan’s last Batman film. Id hate to wait 10 years to hear even hear Nolan maybe continue makin films. Way he talked, sounds like this will be his last and might aswell. Im sure most of everyone here would object to another director takin his place in fear of a repeat of the previous Batman franchise WB took. Besides in my opinion, in Nolan’s Batman world, it seems like his films would have its limitations on villains. Examples would be Nolan not intending to use Penguin or Mr. Freeze. Killer Croc & Clayface would be the same. In other words he’d probly want to re-use the same villains or really go over the rogues gallery and see who he can use such as Blackmask, Harlequinn, Firefly. Id like for Nolan make the 3rd film end great and maybe WB can redo Batman again later in the same manner as that Marvel is doin and even involve Robin in the next franchise again.
Yeah I’m looking for Nolan to wrap up his Batman vision so that the franchise can move on. Looking to see the next vision of Batman in the Justice League movie, appropriate socio-reality applied. Expect to see a subplot involving Talia al Ghul or perhaps Nyssa in 2012…
so we can expect more reboots in a year or two of this franchise, yippeeeeee
