Rumor Patrol: Two Female Leads In ‘Dark Knight Rises’?

2 years ago by Sandy Schaefer

Batman The Dark Knight Rises by PolishTank48 Rumor Patrol: Two Female Leads In Dark Knight Rises?

Christopher Nolan is in the midst of casting a new female lead for The Dark Knight Rises and until we know exactly what the role is or who has been cast in the part, there will be rumors aplenty (not to mention lots of “Dark Knight Rising” jokes).

The current rumor circulating around the web (courtesy of Comic Book Movie) is that there will be two female leads in the third installment of Nolan’s Batman trilogy – in the form of love interests for both Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale). Try not to choke on the amount of salt you take this rumor with, okay? icon razz Rumor Patrol: Two Female Leads In Dark Knight Rises?

One of the characters rumored to appear in The Dark Knight Rises is Detective Sarah Essen, who first appeared in the famous Batman: Year One storyline. Miss Essen was partnered with (at the time) lieutenant Gordon and had a brief affair with him - prior to her being murdered by the Joker. Obviously things would go differently for Essen if she showed up in Batman 3, what with Gordon being commissioner now and the Joker being out of the picture.

The events of The Dark Knight certainly put a strain on Gordon’s marriage that could pave the way to him having an affair (assuming that his wife didn’t divorce him after the whole thing with Two-Face, of course). While we STRONGLY doubt that Sarah Essen – who CBM claims may be played by Charlize Theron – will appear in the third Batman pic, it would be interesting if Nolan does choose to take Gordon’s character into some as yet unexplored dark territory.

Don't expect these two to be a couple in 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

Mr. Wayne will almost undoubtedly have a new love interest in The Dark Knight Rises, but there is no guarantee that it will be the obvious one (i.e., Selina Kyle/Catwoman). The character whose name is now circulating the rumor mill is that of Julie Madison, who is generally portrayed in the Batman comics as a socialite engaged to Bruce, who isn’t necessarily aware about his Batman connection (it depends on the storyline). Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and actress Kacie Thomas (The Burning Plain) are the rumored candidates for that role.

We stress again that there is likely NO truth to this rumor, but it does raise questions about who Batman will (or won’t) be romancing in The Dark Knight Rises. Will it be someone younger, who might be more naive or less cynical about the pursuit of justice in Gotham City? How about an older lady who can sympathize more with Bruce’s dark history? And how will the memory of Rachel Dawes affect Batman’s ability to have an intimate relationship in the future?

Rachel Dawes, left, as portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal in 'The Dark Knight'.

Nolan likes to play things close to the chest, but he will eventually let us know who the villain is going to be in The Dark Knight Rises (it’s not The Riddler, that much is known) and what female character will be the new object of affection for Batman. It’s still entirely possible that they will be one and the same – a la Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, or Harley Quinn (though Quinn is foremost the Joker’s girl).

Will Nolan go with a female character that has a history in the Batman comic books? Or will he create a new female lead for The Dark Knight Rises, much as he did with Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Charlize Theron would be perfect in any role she wanted, the problem is she is kinda hot and not sure how you couldn’t make her Wayne’s romantic interest.

She is awful easy on the eyes during any scene she is in, and is a hell of an actress to boot.

“Charlize Theron would be perfect in any role she wanted, the problem is she is kinda hot and not sure how you couldn’t make her Wayne’s romantic interest.”

Yeah cause hot girls never go for the uber rich famous types like Bruce Wayne.

My point is the other actress who is good looking, but looks a bit humble next to Charlize.

So it would be a tough sell, a hottie like Charlize dating Gordon and the other girl a socialite dating Wayne.

Seems to me like Charlize would dating Wayne.

Coderaven said he wasn’t sure how you COULDN’T make her Wayne’s romantic interest. In other words, he’s asking “How could she play any role BUT Bruce Wayne’s romantic interest?”

Please, NO HARLEY QUINN!! Not as Bruce Wayne’s love interest! Bad idea! I think Nolan should, once again, CREATE a new love interest. And, I have a few ideas about who could be the new villain. Killer Croc. Bane. Black Mask. The Penguin…etc. But, I hope they’re not stupid enough to bring back Two-face! He died in the last movie. Don’t bring him back! Very dumb idea!

Here’s another thought: IF they ever bring Superman & Batman together, I hope they’re not stupid enough to make them enemies. They are BOTH great heroes & need to work together to fight crime when the need arises! Besides, the ONLY way Batman could EVER defeat Superman is by applying Kryptonite to the fight. Otherwise, Superman could plow Batman underground with no effort. If Superman can defeat the likes of Bizarro, Darksaid, Doomsday…etc, he could surely crush Batman, who’s ONLY HUMAN!! And, I’d hate to see that, because, I love BOTH characters. So, they need to work together, despite their differeces. They need to fight against the VILLAINS of the world, not each other!

Riddle me this…….riddle me that………..who’s up next to play the CAT???????????????? I starred in an action drama for five years, and won two Golden Globes for it. I played a Marvel Legend in 2003 and 2005. I love being physical and acting at the same time. I starred in a 2007 action thriller. I have the talent to portray both sieds of the character (mousy secretary Selina Kyle, and Catwoman). I am about Christian Bale’s age. My husband is being considered for directing Nolan’s Superman movie. IAM THE NEXT CATWOMAN. WHO AM I????????? Jennifer Garner as Catwoman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is a little offtopic, but as everyone keeps posting about it anyway, I’m going to respond: Killer Croc won’t be in the next Batman movie. Christopher Nolan already used him, and in a way that will keep him from being used in Batman 3.

Confused? Check out “Batman: Gotham Knight”. It’s a collection of short animated movies directed by Nolan that take place between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Killer Croc appears in them with the same skin condition that each of you mention as a way to bring him onto the screen. Unfortunately, that means he won’t be in the future Nolan continuity.

Also featured in one of the shorts was Floyd Lawton, aka Dead Shot, which is disappointing to me because I wanted him to be in the third movie. At least for Dead Shot, there’s still a way to bring him back if Nolan decides to; but Nolan doesn’t do that. He always brings in something new; which is why Harley Quinn and Talia are out of the running as well, as they are both part of the “old”.

I agree with your statement, but as a correction Nolan did not direct any of the Gotham stories. Each individual thread had it’s own director and writers. here are the directors.

Yasuhiro Aoki (segment “In Darkness Dwells”)
Yuichiro Hayashi (co-director) (segment “In the Darkness Dwells”)
      Futoshi Higashide (segment “Crossfire”)
Toshiyuki Kubooka (segment “Working Through Pain”)
      Hiroshi Morioka (segment “Field Test”)
      Jong-Sik Nam (segment “Deadshot”)
Shoujirou Nishimi (segment “Have I Got a Story For You”) (as Shojiro Nishimi)

Although David S. Goyer did write the screenplay for “In Darkness Dwells” which was the Croc story, and seeing how goyer is a co-writer of the 3rd film, I don’t see how he could use croc a second time.

is this movie really being called “dark knight rises”? I hope they call it “crusade” or “crusader” as a nod to Batman’s other alternate name the caped crusader. I’d like to see a modified version of the bane/azrael storyline. As for a love interest…who cares? Why does this movie need a love interest for Bruce Wayne?
