Prequel tales which examine the backstory of an iconic character are always a gamble, and Bates Motel is no different. The series has the unenviable task of delivering the suspenseful tale of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) – the titular character of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho - and his inevitable descent into madness. But in a world where everyone knows the show’s connection to one of the most suspenseful and celebrated films of all time, can Bates Motel create a compelling experience for viewers?

A&E certainly put together a promising team – with Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) serving as showrunners – and rolled the dice. The much talked about series premiere started things off in an intriguing way and featured a particularly strong performance from Vera Farmiga as Norman’s doomed mother. Still, the series needs room to grow, and if its ratings are any indication, it might very well get the chance to do so.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bates Motel lured in 3 million viewers on Monday night. Those numbers don’t surpass the 4.1 million who tuned in for last year’s debut of crime drama Longmire. However, Bates Motel did bring in record-high viewers among adults 25-54 and adults 18-49, pulling in 1.6 million viewers in each demographic.

Overall, 4.6 million total viewers tuned in to the show throughout the night, including 2.5 million adults 25-54 and 2.4 million adults 18-49. Contrastly, the Longmire premiere brought in 1.4 million adults 25-54 and a 0.8 rating for adults 18-49.

Initial ratings for Bates Motel therefore indicate that the series has far broader appeal than A&E’s typical programming. Whether or not that momentum can be maintained over the entire run remains to be seen, though the network has already ordered a full 10 episodes for season 1.

Whatever the fate of Bates Motel, it will be interesting to see if the show holds on to its audience, and if fellow prequel series Hannibal will manage to make as strong a first impression.

  1. Great news! I really enjoyed it. Have watched the pilot episode twice already. Can’t wait for next weeks!

  2. Awsome awesome show. They manage to keep you on the edge of your seat through so many twists and turns its crazy it was only an hour long seemed like much longer and was just soo good not expecting that.

  3. I’m glad I tuned in for this one. It was good enough that I season passed it as soon as the episode was over. I’m really looking fotward to next week.

  4. I’m planning to stay around since I really am enjoying the suspense of the show

  5. The show is very interesting, I agree on what Screen Rant said earlier about Norman. He’s like a bomb waiting to go off, and that’s what makes him interesting knowing all he has to go off of is his mother.

  6. Anyone know when the next showing of the pilot is? I missed the initial showing and am kicking myself for not DVRing it.

    • It’s on Hulu

  7. I’m glad they mentioned it here because I seldom watch anything on A&E these days so I ddin’t even know about it. Had they gone on AMC and advertized on the Walking Dead their numbers would be going through the roof

  8. Seriously? I found it boring and slow moving. Nothing of note to lure someone into the show, which is a pilot should do. I’ll check out a couple more episodes to see if it goes anywhere, but if it continues at this pace I’m going to pass.

  9. Jessiekizzie – Tonight at 11PM also Sat at 6pm, Sunday at noon & 11PM & Monday again at 2pm all on A&E and you can watch it streaming online free at the official website.

I thought the show was really good. Started off a bit slow but picked up as the episode went on. Eagerly anticipating next week’s episode so I’m sticking with it. A pretty great beginning. I’m not usually into remakes or adaptations of classics like this but I was very pleasantly surprised. It honors the Psycho legacy as well as becoming it’s own thing. The previews for future episodes looks very promising. I intend to stick around to see what happens next.

  10. I really wanted to like it, but after ten minutes into the pilot, I changed channels.

    • Ten minutes? You barely gave it a chance! It has a great plot in my opinion

  11. Loved it! Can’t wait for the next episode.

  12. I watched the first episode on demand. I enjoyed it and did not feel that it was as slow moving as the other comments led me to believe. I will definitely continue watching.

  13. Yes!!!! First episode was great!!!
    Looking forward to seeing more!!!

  14. Excellent pilot! 5/5. Acting was sublime!

  15. Nice article, I think that Bates motel will still continue to be a great show.

  16. Great show…please keep up the suspense. I love it

  17. I love love love this show. Well written and great acting. I am trying to figure out if there’s a reason why Norman sometimes calls his mom “mother” and sometimes “mom”..It’s like there’s a bit of evilness in his voice when he uses “mother”
I also love the likeness of this younger Norman to the original.
In my opinion this is by far the best show since “Breaking Bad”
    Keep up the great work.

  18. I really enjoy this drama and will watch every episode at least once. Finally, another drama to look forward to once a week. I also loved 666 Park Avenue but for some reason they removed it. It was so unique.

  19. I love this show–i stumbled upon it–and now i never miss it–great writing and excellent acting–it keeps you on the edge of your seat–promote it so it returns season after season–wish it was on several times a week!!

  20. Love the show, look forward to seeing it every Monday evening! I hope the series continues for another season, I love the suspense and I think the actors chosen for this show are perfect for their parts!

  21. Love Bates Motel! It is the best show on tv.!

  22. Love this show!!!!! Hooked on seeing what is going to happen next! Wow can’t believe Norman killed his Dad & doesn’t remember it! Crazy!!! Finally something good to watch on TV now that Dallas is over for the season.

  23. I watched the first show and I continue to watch it. It is great. I hope it stays around. I really can’t wait to see what is going to happen next week. The guy who plays Norman is great, and the mother is terrific.

  24. I have watched from ep.1 with “caution” but have grown to actually loving this show. I look forward to Monday nights. I am totally able to put aside that it is modern days and see it from a different perspective. It is NOT “Psycho” nor is it trying to be. I like that they acknowledge if they had tried to do that it would be doomed to fail. So please before reaching for harsh judgement just try to enjoy it as is: EDGY, TRASHY FUN.

  25. The show is awesome, look forward to every Monday Night to watch it!! Great acting. Hope the show stays on for a long, long time.

  26. Great show. Mrs. Bates is hot!!!!

  27. Great show, love the suspense Norman is a truly young psycho really act the part love Mrs Bates though what a vibrant and natural strong willed character she is hot. Great cast they fit together like lego pieces looking forward to tonight show

  28. I have watched about 6 episodes that A&E is showing in succession and I have to say that while it is good, it is hard to watch them one after the other due mostly to the fact that Norma has to be the most manic, bi-polar character I have ever seen. She goes from “normal” to crazy in a split second. Also hard to watch her inappropriate relationship with Norman. She picks the most inopportune times to say things ie: telling Norman she was abused by her brother as he is preparing to go to a dance!

  29. Just finished watching the series in the UK on Universal channel, brilliant series great acting, Who ever done the casting done a great job 10/10, one criticism though why did he have to kill Miss Watson I liked her she is sexy.
