Anthony Starr in Banshee Season 2 Episode 1 Cinemax Series Banshee Renewed for Season 3

When it comes to original programming, Cinemax may be leagues behind corporate sibling HBO. However, while the latter may has a long history delivering hits like current like current flagship series Game of Thrones, the former looks like it might be catching up.

Back in 2011, Cinemax earned its best ratings in years with the premiere of UK action series Strike Back. That show was the first sign that the network was on the verge of becoming a major player in original programming, and since then, the 2013 premiere of Banshee has cemented that fact. Now comes news indicating that Banshee may be Cinemax’s signature hit.

According to Deadline, Cinemax has renewed Banshee for season 3, despite the fact that the show is only a few episodes into its second season. On the show, Anthony Starr plays an ex-con who assumes the identity as sheriff of a small Amish town; Ivana Miličević and Ulrich Thomsen star as his former lover and the local crime kingpin, respectively. The series was created by David Schickler and novelist Jonathan Tropper, with Alan Ball (True Blood) among its producers.

Banshee Cinemax Series Banshee Renewed for Season 3

The show’s early renewal is a bold move on the part of Cinemax and one that demonstrates a tremendous amount of faith in its long-term prospects. After all, the only major original series that the network has on the air is the aforementioned Strike Back (which was also recently renewed for its final season). The fact that Banshee has managed to develop a consistent viewership – without any name stars or connections of pre-existing properties (even Game of Thrones has the popularity of the book series behind it) – could be reason enough for Cinemax to let the show bloom.

The network already has about a half-dozen other action-centric shows in various stages of development and is likely hoping that the success of Banshee can help bolster the chances of success with those upcoming projects, a strategy that could very well pay off in the near future. However, that all depends on whether Banshee can stand the test of time and prove that Cinemax is a worthy destination for quality original shows. If Banshee is any indication, the answer may be a resounding “yes.”

  24. Thank you Cinemax for renewing Banshee. The last season was one of the best action shows of this type that I’ve ever watched. For what it’s worth, I have never before liked a show enough to send a comment.

    Well done.

  25. I like the show because it has plenty of action in it,and has a good story line

  26. Work for comcast and when the lady came to tell us about the new show I jumped in immediately, I love the action, story line , and actors, absolutely the best package.

  27. MORE BANSHEE!!!!!

  28. I didnt know whether watching a show set in the amish part of pa would be worth it. Afterall..I visited lancaster county many times as a child and found nothing but the food and lack of electricity remotely interesting. A few hbo original programs are pretty doggone good and I happen to love strikeback so I gave cinemax another try. Excellent a skeptical nyer loves it!! Theres plot, drama, sex, action and believable characters. What more do u need in a series. Its not for kids Watch it! Youre sure to love it.

  29. Essentially, Banshee is Strike Back set in Amish Land. Strip away all the incredulous plots from both and you’re left with a simple formula: Dudes shootin’, dudes sexin’, dudes shootin’ some more. Guns and sex sells, my friends.

Of course, the formula isn’t necessarily bad; in fact both series are very entertaining. It’s just that these will never compete with the best of ShowTime: Dexter, HomeLand, Big C, and Californication (which took the sex formula thing & brilliantly turned it on its head to become a sad thing). Nor can CMax compete with the best of FX: Justified, Sons, and the Amerikans). HBO? Not a big fan of GOT or anything else from them since just before the gawd-awful last Sopranos episode.

At the end of the day, CMax needs to step up its game if it wants to play with the big boys, and someone needs to throw a life preserver after HBO.
