Anthony Starr in Banshee Season 2 Episode 1 Cinemax Series Banshee Renewed for Season 3

When it comes to original programming, Cinemax may be leagues behind corporate sibling HBO. However, while the latter may has a long history delivering hits like current like current flagship series Game of Thrones, the former looks like it might be catching up.

Back in 2011, Cinemax earned its best ratings in years with the premiere of UK action series Strike Back. That show was the first sign that the network was on the verge of becoming a major player in original programming, and since then, the 2013 premiere of Banshee has cemented that fact. Now comes news indicating that Banshee may be Cinemax’s signature hit.

According to Deadline, Cinemax has renewed Banshee for season 3, despite the fact that the show is only a few episodes into its second season. On the show, Anthony Starr plays an ex-con who assumes the identity as sheriff of a small Amish town; Ivana Miličević and Ulrich Thomsen star as his former lover and the local crime kingpin, respectively. The series was created by David Schickler and novelist Jonathan Tropper, with Alan Ball (True Blood) among its producers.

Banshee Cinemax Series Banshee Renewed for Season 3

The show’s early renewal is a bold move on the part of Cinemax and one that demonstrates a tremendous amount of faith in its long-term prospects. After all, the only major original series that the network has on the air is the aforementioned Strike Back (which was also recently renewed for its final season). The fact that Banshee has managed to develop a consistent viewership – without any name stars or connections of pre-existing properties (even Game of Thrones has the popularity of the book series behind it) – could be reason enough for Cinemax to let the show bloom.

The network already has about a half-dozen other action-centric shows in various stages of development and is likely hoping that the success of Banshee can help bolster the chances of success with those upcoming projects, a strategy that could very well pay off in the near future. However, that all depends on whether Banshee can stand the test of time and prove that Cinemax is a worthy destination for quality original shows. If Banshee is any indication, the answer may be a resounding “yes.”

  1. Have a feeling lots of loose ends will need to be tied up. Last episode was a two parted. Show has easter eggs for ppl who don’t even celebrate it (ie looking for them)

    • especially the photos from the opening credits, if you notice, about a quarter of the photos change each episode, and if you study them closely, they are ironic and symbolic to the story’s plot!

      • Exactly. As well as the safe combination. Not to mention the after credit scenes, which almost no one watched.

      • This i never noticed myself. Guess i’ll have to start paying attention to them.

  2. Lili Simmons… Yummy.

  3. Hell Yeah!!! This show is freaking awesome, never a dull moment and always thrilling!

  4. Love the show lots of action and really hot women to look at!!

  5. Great news. If you are fan of sex and violence in a series this is a must watch. Its def an entertaining show.

  6. I gave up on this after half the first season, there’s only so many times you can see people beat each other up over minor plot points.

  7. This show has a unique darkness that is addicting. I enjoy it and like the news.

  8. The show is entertaining and I am hooked on it. Very interesting story lines and relationships with many opportunities for character development. I much prefer spending an hour watching and anticipating what’s next than watching mindless “reality” TV. Talk about run it’s course somebody tie up Ryan Seacreast…no mazs

  9. I absolutely love Banshee! Each episode individually flows to the next one in a natural way keeping up the interest with a final crescendo. Just like True Blood does and other successful series out there.

At this point I would be very sad if Cinemax ever decided to end these series. The curiosity on my side is high as what will happen to each character as the story goes on.

2nd season and I feel the story has a depth and a good direction. A need to know more has grown stronger for every episode in me. I vote for 5 stars for Banshee. Good acting, good screenplay, good scenery, talented actors, the director does an awesome job in playing around with camera angles and lighting emphasizing flashbacks or fight scenes. It has a very artistic tough to be honest!

Game of thrones didn’t keep my interest that easy… I am sorry. I know lots of people love those series but nah… I get the feeling its a repetition of an old story from childhood that you’ve heard time and time over again. Gets old very fast so to speak.

  10. Insane..intense..so frikn sick..continue the successful series..thank you..

  11. The show is amazing and addictive! Original plot, well written, superbly casted and top notch talent. I can’t wait for Season 3. After seeing the first few episodes of Season 1, I was so impressed and intrigued with Antony Starr, when I discovered that he played twins on the New Zealand hit series, Outrageous Fortune, I watched all 5 seasons on Netflix. Antony Starr is an amazing actor. I LOVE BANSHEE AND HOPE THEY WILL BE RENEWED FOR MANY MORE SEASONS. Alan Ball sure knows how to pick winning series!
