Bad Boys 3 On The Way

With Michael Bay off making giant robot movies, Will Smith solidifying himself as one of the most bankable movie stars on Earth, and Martin Lawrence, well… still acting, it would be understandable if there was never a third installment in the Bad Boys series. However, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, comes news that not only has Columbia started to develop a Bad Boys 3 but has already signed a screenwriter to it.

Columbia has hired Peter Craig to write the Bad Boys 3 script – Craig doesn’t have any completed screenplays out there yet (he has three in development, including Cowboy Bebop), but according to Wikipedia he’s a published author of “darkly comic novels of imploding father-son relationships.” The hope is to have a script which will reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and stars, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

However, at this stage, even with a writer on-board, the project is still in the early stages and no deal has been made with any of the four main players from the first two to come back for another. Pretty much with all of them (except maybe Lawrence), there comes an expensive price tag attached. As stated, Smith is about the only true bankable movie star in the business (his last 8 movies have all surpassed the $100 million mark), and by now Bay is used to getting huge paychecks and collecting percentages of money from toy merchandising.

However, if you look at the money the first two movies made, I don’t think the studio should be that worried: The first one cost $19 million to make, and made over $140 million at the worldwide box office; the second one’s budget ballooned to a whopping $130 million (I guess the boys wanted bigger toys to play with), but still ending up making over $270 million worldwide. I’m sure if Bay were to come back he’d want a similarly high budget to play with (after all, he’s used to those giant fighting robots that cost a small country’s wealth to put on screen).

Big question, though: Is there still enough interest in Bad Boys to make a third installment worth the while? I’d actually guess that yeah, there probably is. With two (really) popular films to play off of, and the audience-drawing Smith as one of the leads (that’s presuming he comes back), I don’t think a Bad Boys 3 would have much trouble filling the seats.

As stated, although no agreements or deals have been made by Bay, Smith, Lawrence or Bruckheimer, all of them have expressed past interest in doing another Bad Boys. One quote from Bruckheimer said that towards the end of the shoot for the second film, both Smith and Lawrence were already ready to sign up for another one because they were having so much fun. Another quote from Smith at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards said that he’s got an idea for a story for the third movie, but that Bay is now, “too expensive… way too expensive.”

Have you looked in the mirror, lately, Mr. Smith?!…

I enjoyed the first two Bad Boys for what they were. They have some great action sequences (the one on the freeway in the second one is exhilarating), and Smith and Lawrence are fun to watch together. But I never held them in that high regard, and IMO are pretty throwaway (I say they could be classified as guilty pleasures) and I don’t really find myself wanting to revisit them. However, I’d give a third one a shot, if only for another dose of car chases and explosions with Smith and Lawrence leading – or rather, chasing after – the chaos once more.

What do you think about a Bad Boys 3? Are you all for it or is your reaction, “Aw, hell naw!”?

  1. Seven pounds did not make 100 million domestically (70 million) but it did make almost 170 million globally. I really enjoyed the first movie but thought the second one was contrived..Would give the third film a chance but I don’t see this happening with Bay AND Smith..

    • Love both movies I can’t wait for part 3 it will be a hit

  2. @greenknight333,

Yeah, when I say what money it made, I’m referring to how much in total, worldwide.

  3. I enjoyed both movies for what they were, and I think that the BB1 was better story wise, and BB2 had much better effects.

The third installment should be after they had drifted apart, and continue with there carrier. That a case brings them back together to confront a common enemy.

  4. I liked the first one and loved the 2nd, although the first had a better story. I wouldn’t mind seeing another one.

  5. Bout time.. maybe we’ll get another cool music vid/song atached…. yooooooooo oh ohhohhohh, yooooooooo oh ohoho shake ya tail feather!!

  6. I liked 1.
    I skipped 2.
but if the story sounds good,
    I shall certainly see 3.

  7. I watched both thought they were both good I like the action and the comedy I reckon it goes well together lol. Hopefully they have learnt the whole song this time instead of just.
“Bad Boys Bad Boys, What you gonna do! What you gonna do when they come for you… ” :D (I think I got that right)lmao

  8. “I liked 1.
    I skipped 2.”

    You skipped 2??????????????????? Whattttttttt!!!!

    I’d like a 3rd

  9. Foopher,
    Yep.
    I skipped 2 .
But if it sounds like 3 has a good story, I will go .

  10. “You ain’t seen Bad Boys II?” – Hot Fuzz

  11. I may slit my own throat for this…Bad Boys is my favorite movie of all time!!!!! I laughed harder in that one then in most comedies I’ve seen. The second was great for what it was. I understand if they “need” to make another but DON’T do it without Lawerence or Smith.

  12. This shiat just got real…again.

  13. They could bring Gabrielle Union back to have even more characters to play with. But hell yeah I’m all for a Bad Boys 3, I loved the other 2, especially #2. Smith and Lawrence make a really good team.

  14. Bad Boys was a good movie, Bad Boys 2 was flippin great! They had so many scenes in the movie where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence just played off of each other so well. The extacy scene was one of the funniest of all time, that and in the morgue. I would love to see a Bad Boys 3, and would be one of the first in line to go see it. Just do not make a 3 if you dont bring back the orignal cast members, otherwise its a pointless waste of money.

  15. Look at your pupils!!!

Man, how am I gonna look at my pupils?

  16. Looks like i’m taking the day off work this comes out. It’s been too long! I hope Reggie (“You ever make love to a man? ‘no sir’ You want to?”) makes a cameo. That was prob the second-funniest scene in II (agreed the ectstacy scene was #1).

  17. And who is the writer again for BB3?? lol

I’ll have a go at writing a draft of the script, but would they let me?? lol..as a story has been in my head the last three years..build fresh but established character arcs..unexpected backstory..always have a good bad guy..did I leave anything out? BOO-YA! :D

All films go through development hell, this proposed sequel would be NO exception, a good script can take upto a year/s to get locked down, then there’s the casting(all to do with timing when everyone is free) then there’s prep, the shoot, etc etc etc.
So if everything falls in place like yo mammys clockwork, then expect BB3
to be in theatres Summer 2013/2014.(an educated guess on my part yo):P

BAD BOYS2 lacked real tension at times and was cliched in alot of areas, though music was used to good effect to make you feel involved at times.
I would have had one of the main characters get badly shot and near death, less car chases, made a Female the lead villan instead..anyways, who the f am I from little New-Zealand. :D
Someone can mail me if they wish to discuss further.

    Peace out!

  24. Bad Boys! (1 & 2) My all time favorite movies hands down! With 10 years in between the 1st & 2nd one the chemistry between all four main individuals was incredible & their ability to bring you almost into the movie yourself is amazing. I’ve been wanting a Bad Boys 3 since the very first time I saw the 2nd one and it ended. I absolutely LOVE this franchise & with the success of both 1 & 2, I don’t see why any of them wouldn’t want to go for a third and final BLAST of a movie & just kill it on screen topping off the franchise and allowing us fans some closure & the excitement I believe we all deserve! Hands down.. Bad Boys is my all time favorite & I could watch either one of those movies a million times over! Please, please…. Bring it back one more time! Get the ball rolling & get it started. There’s no doubt or concern that it wouldn’t be a hit, as long as it’s the same original crew at the base! :) PLEASE!

  25. He’ll yeah! Can’t wait ! Bought the movies and still watch them when they come on tv. Thank you in advance.

  26. Oh yes they need to do a third movie. The chemistry between the two actors is great but they both would have to be on board to make the movie.
