‘The Avengers’ Villains Confirmed By Images of Cancelled Video Game Tie-In?

4 years ago by

Despite images of CGI-suit wearing motion-capture guys, the photo leaks from The Avengers set did little to confirm one way or the other who exactly the superhero mash-up team would be facing-off against next summer. Unofficial details on the film’s script sparked what have become on-going rumors as to the identity of The Avengers‘ villains – something we even discussed in the first episode of the Screen Rant Underground podcast.

However, thanks to mock-ups for a, now cancelled, Avengers video game tie-in, we have further evidence to corroborate prior speculation – as well as a first-look at how the nefarious enemies might appear in the film.

While there’s no way of knowing whether or not the characters in question will appear as they were modeled in the game – not to mention whether or not they are for sure in the film – coupled with prior reports, it’s becoming increasingly likely that we’re on the right track. That said, as we’ve previously warned, pre-release details, especially images, can contain MILD to MEDIUM SPOILERS for The Avengers. If you are attempting to avoid spoilers altogether, please be advised to turn away now – you have been WARNED.

Anyone who has been following the film will no doubt recognize the characters facing off against Thor in these early concept images as the Skrulls – and possibly an updated take-on the Super Skrulls. There are a couple different versions of the larger enemy types as well as female Skrull – which would certainly be interesting to see depicted in the final film. The source article reports that the images are from a mock-up video of the hulking brutes in action but copyright infringement forced the video’s removal. Should the footage appear online again, we’ll make sure to update our post.

Most likely, the images confirm that Loki’s “army” will actually be comprised of an invading Skrull force but, until we hear official confirmation, it’s still impossible to say for sure. Video game tie-ins often include comic-book favorite boss characters that do not appear in the film (such as Scorpion in Spider-Man: The Movie or Ulik in Thor: God of Thunder) – however, the fact that the Skrulls are so prominently featured in the early-stage development of the game definitely indicates that they were going to be a major focus in the title.

  1. KNEW IT.

  3. that green dude comes out on Marvel vs Capcom3

  4. I wouldn’t consider any thing from a tie-in game as actual confirmation as to what is going in a particular movie.

    • Agreed. The only thing this “definitely indicates” is that the Skrulls were going to be in the game.

    • Agreed.

      (What ‘Big Log’ said):
This just means that the Skrulls were going to be IN THE GAME.
Most of the Marvel tie-in games have different/other villains than the ones that appeared in the movie (i.e. the villains in the games aren’t usually the same villains that were in the movie).

THIS PROVES NOTHING PEOPLE (Not yet anyway)

    • My only hesitance to believe this may be accurate is the fact that in one of the images, the Super Skrull has the arm of The Thing from FF. I’m not sure how all the ownership works on properties between studios, but I don’t know if Marvel would be allowed to use The Thing’s arm since FF is still under Fox’s control.

      • FOX only owns the “movie rights”. Marvel is still allowed to use ALL of their properties in any way they see fit (including video games)

  5. bad choice of villains smdh

  6. I doubt it will be the Skrulls, especially considering that the versions of Thor and Cap that are featured appear to be the Ultimate Marvel versions. Considering the original origins of the Avengers and what I saw in the teaser trailer, my money is on the villain being Loki.

    • That’s nothing new. Everyone knows Loki is going to be a villain because he’s evil and he’s in the movie. The question is what will his army be comprised of.

  7. I wouldnt be too sure about that according to this article:

  8. I think that there are too many rumors now to come to any conclusion at all… Skrulls, Kree, Chitauri, Thanos… so on and so forth !!!! :-) the only thing that is definitive is “Loki” …

  9. I wouldn’t mind seeing an Avengers trilogy revolve around Thanos and the Infinite Gauntlet, that’s pipe dreaming though because it wouldn’t work unless most of the Marvel universe was involved. They do seem to be hinting at the possibility. Thanos may be a surprise in the Avengers. I just want to see Hulk level buildings with a sonic clap and pick up Mjolnir. I hope we see Thor’s helmet from the Thor movie, it was sick for the few seconds it was on screen.

    • Yeah! :D

Thanos would be awesome (further down the line – in Avengers 2 or 3 maybe).

  10. oohhh! thats a skrull looks a bit like an orc or ogar lol but i agree with others on this post you go to any tie-in game of the movie and you’ll be like “hay, they wasn’t in the movie” happens alot

  11. nice, still hoping to see the Leader in the film, i just hate when they create some new character in a film and in the sequel they never use them, or never make a sequel so we are left hanging. so bring on the skrull and bring in The Leader.

  12. I’m kinda disappointed that this game was cancelled (kinda)… the concept art looks pretty cool (even though I’m not a fan of “Ultimate Thor’s” costume).

  13. I saw the video while it was up. The pictures do not do it justice. And yes there is no doubt Thor is baeting up Skrulls and Super Skrulls. But I think it was unfinished because its not the Ultimate Thor. Its just him without his cape and helmet. Look at the disc’s on his front. Thats original Thor. Also look at the hammer. (not ultimates) Having seen the footage I am truley bummed that this game was cancelled. Just the way the characters moved was awesome

    • That IS the “Ultimate Thor” costume (with some alterations).
It looks nothing like the movie version.

  14. sweeeeet

  15. Marvel…’Marvel Studios continues to show their leadership in the CBM genure. Fox and Sony/Columbia may have the lisenses to major MCU characters…DC/Warner has its entire Libary but the difference in providing the true interpretation of theses characters belongs to Marvel Studio.

I just saw the new ‘Superman pics…I Like Henry Cavil and the DCU, I thought all of theses changes and outlooks to the character was due to the ‘Law suit but if not….’What the F****!!!!
Once again(Green Lantern/Green Hornet) someone in Hollywood feels their *personal interpretation of the character is the best direction to go. I would only assume the failures of the priviously mentioned projects would lend some insight to ‘Public reactions when characters and storyline are altered or basically changed altogether. But obviously ….
    Here we go again!

  16. I’m still a believer in the Chitauri simply because it ties into the Ultimate Comics (which is where coincidentally they are pulling most of the characters from).

Also, considering the Skrulls THEMSELVES call the Chitauri “terrorists”, that aligns better with being willing to follow Loki. I highly doubt that Loki and his charming personality would be able to convince the Skrulls to follow him (Cosmic Cube in tow or not). The Skrulls are not followers and cannot be simply bought.

So you can all keep callin’ them Skrulls but that’s a misnomer.

If this is true though, my only question would be…….how the hell did Loki even know to make contact with them? Cosmic Cube pointed the way? Chitauri hiding out in the nine realms? Chitauri found Loki? Whatever it is I hope they use something better than what I will term, “comic book logic”

    • “If this is true though, my only question would be…….how the hell did Loki even know to make contact with them? ”

Quite simple they are an alien race… asgardians are an alien race. They met at a social. Or they could have been a race of aliens the asgardians fought before.

Also you are incorrect I believe about the Skrulls and Chitauri.

The first alien shapeshifters introduced in the Ultimate Marvel Universe are known on Earth as the Chitauri, who financed the Nazi regime in an attempt to conquer the Earth. Their leader Herr Kleiser states that they are called by other names on various worlds, including the name “Skrull”.

Another race called Skrulls, physically resembling the Skrulls of the mainstream Marvel universe appear later (led by the billion year old Skrull Emperor); these Skrulls dislike being confused with the Chitauri, whom they call terrorists. They have extremely advanced technology, but have not been observed to shapeshift. These Skrulls were seen only in an alternate timeline in which Reed Richards contacted their world via his teleporter; the events leading to that timeline were altered in Ultimate Fantastic Four #29 so that contact was never made.

So if you are to believe wiki (and I dont care what anyone says) The Skrulls in the ULTIMATE U are for all purposes Chitauri as the skrulls we know (in the Mainstream MU) are not in the UMU.

However it would be cool if they were the green Skrulls.

  17. Will the War Machine be in the Avengers at all? All this talk of villains, what about him

    • No, I don’t believe he will be in Avengers. I think he will be in IM3 though.

  18. AWESOME Avengers promo art has just been released:

MAN, it looks so AWESOME :D

  19. Film Fan: yeah would love to see The Leader in Avengers.

Ojnid80: i want to see War Machine making an appearance too, since he’s included in Stark’s universe. Fans wud be left wondering on whr he wud be, if he doesnt makes an appearance.

i also wud like to see Cap using the mjolnir since he’s the only one worthy enuf of using it

    • War Machine rarely joined up with the Avengers… it would be weird to see him in the movie since he doesn’t really have anything to do with what’s going on (sure, he’s a friend of Stark’s, but other than that – he has no place in the movie). But, it has been confirmed by Don Cheadle (and some other people) that War Machine will definitely NOT be appearing in the Avengers. (Sorry for being a spoil-sport there ;))

Also, Cap isn’t “the only one worthy enough to wield Mjornir”… there are a few other characters who have used the hammer as well, namely: Beta Ray Bill, Thunderstrike, Thor-girl and of course, Odin.

      • war machine is an american colonel i think if some foreign army is attacking US soil then hes gonna have something to do with it especially if its not only foreign but alien

  20. The Avenger: meant it in a context that only mainstream Avengers are making an appearance in the movie, regarding bout the mjolnir.

  21. seems likely to me that the skrulls will be the antagonists..however, the thing that has always bothered me about that is that i don’t see them particularly willing to take any orders from anyone including an outsider that’s just been banished like loki….

  22. man i hope they take a cue from the avengers cartoon movie and have a battle seen with the hulk!!

  23. @film fan
I would love to see the Leader! I was really hoping we were going to get to see him especially bc I like the actor who played him. The Leader has been a fav of mine since I was younger!

  24. Yeah Marvel created him (the Leader) in the Hulk film, and they never mention him again. Im wondering if they are useing him in the shadows or something, it just would’nt make sense if he’s not in the film.I hope they keep continuity and use him at least in the sequel if not in the first avengers film.

  25. Movie tie in games always put rogues in the games that are not in the movies. I’m sure the Skrulls are in the movie, but this doesn’t really mean much.

I’m more interested in the news that the game is being cancelled. Movie tie in games usually suck, but that’s not always the case. I had hope that an Avengers game would be awesome sad to see it not happening.

    • Agreed there have been a couple of movie games that stuck out to me like the Spider-Man movie games & the Wolverine movie game. Other wise yeah they do for the most part suck.

  26. Loki has the blue “Mind Infinity Gem” he pretty much can manipulate minds now. So he may have influenced a Skrull leader to send a fleat to attack the earth.

  27. Does it actually matter who the villain in the film is going to be?

    • I’d say yes. Why would you assemble such a force unless the foe is too much for just one of them. The enemy has to be powerful enough for the whole team to assemble.

      • No I understand that and I agree that the villain should be powerful enough for them to have to assemble, I’m just saying [as my own personal opinion obviously] that it shouldn’t matter who the villain is. I planned on seeing the Dark Knight Rises whether the villain was Bane or Hugo Strange [which alot of sites thought he was going to be the villain] or anybody for that matter. If it does turn out to be the Skrulls then great I’ll enjoy it, but they could have picked a different villain [again assuming the Skrulls are in the film] and I would still be excited for this movie. Again it’s just my personal opinion and maybe the Avengers on the big screen need to fight a certain villain but I’m sure I will enjoy the movie no matter what as long as it [and all other movies actually] is entertaining and has a good story. Thanks for the response, you do make a good point.

  28. I still get the feeling Marvel haven’t quite worked out yet what they’re going to do…either follow the Avengers Cartoon plot…or really surprise evryone and go off in a whole new direction that’ll make a trilogy out of Avengers. I guesss, if right, this movie will be about just bringing the heroes together…but movie 2 & 3 will take us on a major blockbusting romp on a Star Wars scale. Always wanted that as a fan !
    Make Mine Marvel !

  29. If they are using Super Skrull that would make no scence scince they are rebooting fantastic four.
