The Avengers Movie Artwork The Avengers Roster Showcased in New Movie Artwork & Video [Updated]

Outside of Tom Hiddleston’s villainous Loki returning in The Avengers after his introduction in Thor as the primary villain, Marvel Studios has kept a sealed lid on any official information regarding the other baddies that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will have to battle against. In fact, we haven’t really seen too much of the principal cast leaked online either.

Along with the button at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, eager fans were given their first real look at The Avengers roster during Comic-Con when Marvel released character posters for the team, that could fit together, forming a larger image. Today, we have a few more pieces of artwork, depicting the team posing together, fighting together and a little more.

The recent onslaught of set photos and videos of the final weeks of shooting The Avengers in Cleveland may at first, appear to offer plenty, but in reality we only got a good look at two heroes we already knew about with some potential spoilers regarding Loki’s “army” and the vehicles they use. All of the months of production before it gave rise to no spoilers at all so there’s still plenty of surprises left to come… that is, if the leaked images from the cancelled Avengers movie tie-in game didn’t spoil it already. Then again, anyone who’s been paying attention knows who the other villains of Joss Whedon’s film will be anyway.

Today, check out this new video highlighting The Avengers roster and the cast of actors playing them – then follow that with a look at some promo artwork of the Avengers standing together.

The four new images come from Spider Media and all take the form of conceptual and promotional art, but they do provide another detailed look at The Avengers team together in full costume - Click for super high res versions:

When you step back and really think about these images, these actors and the characters they’re playing on the silver screen, it’s hard to fathom that it’s really happening. Marvel has successfully brought to life Iron Man, Captain America and Thor and they’re actually going to join forces to fight the biggest threat we’ve seen in the movies to date. Enjoy it, fans. It’s been a long time coming.

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon, opening in theaters on May 4, 2012.

  1. I still can’t believe it. Man, that theater is gonna be packed.

  2. Man I can’t wait for this to open. All these teasers and footage from the set make me anxious even more than I already am. I’m beginning to think that MAYBE we might see either the Frost Giants return (which is unlikely), or The Skrull make their first film appearance as the secondary bad guys. Or Maybe, just maybe they follow the original story of the Avengers and the team has to fight a psychotic Hulk that’s been brainwashed by Loki, which lets face it, either scenario is going to rule..

    • Loki is obviously the main baddie and theres some sort of alien presence, whether is IS the Skrulls or not, remains to be seen. Not saying that they wont fight the Hulk at some point for whatever reason but it seems from all the promo art and the D23 footage where Stark says “We have a Hulk” suggests that he is actually on the team

    • An actor that portrayed a frost giant in the Thor movie is shown portraying another of the same generic title on The Avengers cast on IMDB.com, so, most likely, there will be at least one scene with them.

  3. Its all very surreal that this is all happening eh?

    • The Hulk is a bad guy. Loki take control of the Hulk for a duration of the movie.

  4. I swear I’ve been saying for years that Marvel needed to do this, and now it’s blowing my mind. Now all we need is a mention or tipping of the hat towards other characters in that universe in these movie i feel it would solidify it even more so than it already is. Some adamantium claw marks or a random leftover webbing would be sick.

  5. “Marvel has successfully brought to life Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.”

I don’t mean to be a hater, but it irritates the hell out of me when people choose to forget “The Incredible Hulk”. Like, I was reading a review for “Captain America” and the reviewer opened with “Marvel’s fourth feature film…” I’m sorry but it does really annoy me, especially considering “The Incredible Hulk” was probably the second best out of the now FIVE Marvel Studios films. Anyone else kinda agree with what I’m saying or see where I’m coming from?

Btw my favourite to least favourite “Avenger” films…

    1. Iron Man
    2. The Incredible Hulk
    3. Thor
    4. Iron Man 2
    5. Captain America: The First Avenger

    • I get your point about disregarding The Incredible Hulk, it was completely overshadowed by Iron Man in the summer of ’08 but the rest of your statement is a matter of opinion. Everyone else has their opinion of what their favorite MCU film was and what they thought was the best.

To me my “Favorite” list would go:
      Cap
      Iron Man
      Thor
      Iron Man 2
      Incredible Hulk

but in order of “best” film:

      Iron Man
      Captain America tied with Thor
      Incredible Hulk
      Iron Man 2

      See The difference?

    • It is unfair that TIH doesn’t get mentioned… but in all fairness, it did do the worst in box office and the general public remembered Iron Man a lot more than the Hulk.
But it is very sad to see people disregard a wonderful movie like that :(

    • We already had a big budget Hulk by Ang Lee that made the same amount of money in theaters – this is also the third actor playing him in 8 years on the big screen so I didn’t count that as the same because Iron Man/Thor/Cap were somewhat lesser known to mainstream and the FIRST time they go theatrical treatment.

    • And, those are just examples… I also didn’t mention Nick Fury, Black Widow or Hawkeye even though The Incredible Hulk is one of the best Marvel Studios films IMO.

p.s. Here’s the ‘Avengers Assemble’ Branding logo:
      http://www.hasbro.com/marvel/en_us/avengers/images/generic/hdr/avengers-circle.png

  6. Totally agree and it piss me off as well.

I liked Incredible Hulk better than Iron Man, though. I agree with the rest of your list (Iron Man second).

  7. Man oh man! :D

That artwork is frikken awesome! :D (I can’t stop using these smiley faces :D) The new ‘Avengers Assembled’ artwork wallpaper (above) is my new desktop wallpaper for LIFE! (Well… until an even BETTER pic comes out)

Some people (on other sites) have been thinking that the blue object in Loki’s staff is actually the cosmic cube… I would just like to say to those people: the clue’s in the name, “cube”, it’s NOT the cosmic cube people, zoom into the picture, then you can clearly see it’s a circular object. (I’m betting that it’s one of the infinity gems – Loki could have easily stolen it while he took over the throne in his father’s absence.)

    I can’t believe it’s finally happening… :D

    • I think one of the gems is the Mind Gem, and it would make since that Loki would use that to control The Hulk.

And yes, TIH should have been mentioned.

  8. l still don’t see a reason for hulk to be there

    • You don’t see a reason for, arguably, the strongest superhero to be part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

    • Because he’s a founding member, and one of Marvel’s most famous characters.

  9. Hulk is there to smash Loki’s Army, however in comics and in features length films, the problem begins once they have defeated the Skrull or whatever the bad guys are….. Because the Hulk is so amped up from the rage of war he truly is unstoppable, then the Avengers must work together to stop / contain the Hulk.

Maybe we will see the Hulkbuster Ironman armour?

  10. It would be cool if the Leader was helping Loki and was Controling the hulks mind, bring in the Leader. anyways still looking forward to this film. it would be cool to see ultimate ironman as well and ultron for the sequel.

  11. Among all the new movies, Avenger is my top favorite. It will be epic to see so many superheroes sharing the same screen.

  12. I am so pumped for this movie! It is a long time coming and it is the first of its kind. I really hope Marvel can get some of their film properties (X-Men, Spiderman, Fantastic Four) back so they can expand their movie universe. Even if they didn’t make another Avenger movie (I know they will), they can rely on solid solo films and epic ensemble movies.

I have to say this too…They need to make a movie about The Sentry. I know most comic book readers don’t like The Sentry, but he is a vastly different type of character, and his story could translate very well into film.

    • Apparently, Marvel got the film rights to the FF back.
Whether this is just a rumor or a fact is yet to be seen though…

      • Wow! I hadn’t heard that. That is pretty awesome. There are a lot of potential stories that could be told with Reed Richards and Tony Stark. If they ever get a Dr. Strange movie going and get many other characters going in their own respective films-World War Hulk, Civil War, Secret Invasion, House of M, Dark Avengers could all be explored through film. This potential franchise is pretty exciting. I am still rooting for a Sentry film, so here is to staying hopeful :) .

        • I’m thinking that Human Torch and Captain America are the same actor so a FF / Avengers movie would be a bit tricky, would like to see Dr Doom take on The Avengers though.

          • I think that would be a non-issue since the F4 done by Fox would be null and void (thankfully).

          • And here ladies and gentlemen, we see someone with no knowledge of the MCU ;) JK

But, like John Taylor said, the first FF movies were done by FOX and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with any of the current Marvel movies. The FF movies DO NOT EXIST in the same “universe” as the rest of the Marvel movies (produced my Marvel Studios)

          • There would be no conflict because the previous FF films aren’t in the same shared universe, & even if they were they would be recasting the FF anyway.

            • I’m pretty sure John and I already covered that ;)

      • @TheAvenger – Twentieth Century Fox still owns FF.

        • Drat!

        • AH, well, that’s disappointing :(
          Maybe someday though…

        • I really wish they could just buy it back and break their contract agreement. I know it would be an expensive contract breach, but if they thought about the potential earnings from introducing that property in the Marvel movie universe, then it could be a potential profit. I really want them to do this with all of the properties that they let go…

In the meantime, they could always write a Sentry movie!! I know I almost trolling at this point with my Sentry-fanboy-ism, but he is my favorite Marvel character…and I would really like to see him on screen. I know I am in the minority when it comes to the approval rating of The Sentry, but how badass would it be to see a “Superman”-type character rip someone in half?Or throw them into the sun?…You know the biggest complaints of the Superman movies have been that Supes’ never actually fought anyone… (Except Zod and the nuclear guy from Quest for Peace), So it would be nice to see a “hero” with extreme power flex his muscles once in a while. Even showing his inner struggle with the Void would be amazing to witness on film. Funny thing-the director that I would choose to make such a movie, would be Zack Snyder, just from what he did with Watchmen…

          I guess I will wait….

  13. I wanns see The Hulk and Thoe go at it.

And since other poster there fav Marvel Movies here is mine

    Thor
    The Incredivle Hulk
    Iron Man
    Captain America
    Iron Man 2

  14. It’s really great to see Hawkeye in there. Clint really stepped in as leader on numerous occasions and deserves some cred. It would’ve been nice to see a female Avenger with actual super powers though. Scarlett looks good as Black Widow but she conveys a lack of intelligence that Natasha has in trade.

And thankfully Hulk is there, I also loved TIH and hoped for a sequel (vs. leader and he turns gray at end, then in Hulk 3 he fights the U-Foes!)

I hope that we see Hank and Janet in some capacity to set-up Ant-Man or Avengers 3.

  15. Good things and bad things about Joss !
I like him on TV a lot,
but on the Big Screen…not a good choice !

His Movies always feel like TV Films, nothing Big,nothing Epic, small !

    So reading
“going to join forces to fight the biggest threat we’ve seen in the movies to date”
i feel it very hard to believe ! Yes i would like so too..but with Joss…:(

    Anyway,I hope I am wrong.
One thing is sure,he knows how to do Characters well.
Still Love and Miss Firefly !

    • While I’m not a huge fan of Joss, you really can’t hate on his feature films as he has only had 1, Serenity. He hasn’t made a “real” feature film though. Serenity was great for what it was, Firefly with a bit of a bigger budget, but not a huge budget mind you. It is hard to have a space opera like a Trek or Star Wars with a $40 million budget.

      • I think “Serenity” is one of the most under-rated sci-fi movies out there. Give Abrams a 40 million budget and see what Star Trek 2 looks like. Plus he has been involved in a lot of Hollywood films before Serenity. According to Graham Yost, the credited writer of Speed, Whedon wrote most of its dialogue. He was nominated (along with six other writers) for an Academy Award for Toy Story’s screenplay. He was even involved with the script for X-Men.

Plus he knows Marvel comics. Whedon wrote Astonishing X-Men in Marvel Comics’ popular line of comics about the X-Men but finished his 24 issue run in 2008 and handed over the writing reins to Warren Ellis. The title, recreated specifically for Whedon, has been one of Marvel’s best-selling comics as of 2006 and was nominated for several Eisner Awards including Best Serialized Story, Best Continuing Series, Best New Series and Best Writer, winning the Best Continuing Series award in 2006.

Obviously a Whedon fan here, so I am a little biased, but I honestly think that of all the directors out there, for this particular type of comic book movie, Whedon is the best choice hands down.

“Let me know if real power wants a magazine.”

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_Whedon#Feature_films_and_video

  16. The artwork is awesome.

The Avengers will break box office records, I really hope this movie works out well because Thor, X-Men: First Class and Captain America: TFA are the best comic book movies of the year.

Marvel is doing well, I really hope the studio will keep the good work up now that Disney is distributingThe Avengers and Iron Man 2.

  17. “Enjoy it, fans. It’s been a long time coming”

Worth repeating. I have been waiting for this since I was a teen (about 10 thousand years ago :-D ).

  18. Shame I won’t see Hank Pym & Janet. Don’t know why they just didn’t introduce them as independent scientist working with SHIELD. Hopefully we will get a cameo.

Anyways my favorite MCU movies are:
    Ironman
    Incredible Hulk
    Thor
    Captain America
    Ironman 2

    • Janet was initially supposed to be part of the team but due to a variety of reasons (and the similar costume/design to Angel in X-Men: First Class) she won’t be.

Look for them in the sequel.

      • If we get an Antman and Black Panther between Avengers 1 & 2, then it would make sense to have Hank, Janet and T’Challa in the sequel.

      • Yeah that’s true, it’s all Edgar Wright’s fault for writing an incredibly stupid and cronologically wrong screenplay for Ant-Man, making it virtually impossible for Hank and Janet to appear in The Avengers. Whedon said he tried to work around it but it just would’nt have worked because of Edgar Wright’s stupid screenplay ;in which he has been working on with multpiple drafts for 4-5 YEARS!!! It better be a masterpiece.

    • Here’s to hoping Hank and Janet both get cameos…

      • They would have to be cast first which I don’t think has (or will) happen.

I really think that not including both of them however in some way is an injustice considering they ARE founding members even in the Ultimates version.

  19. The only sad part about this whole thing and I blame FOX is that we will never get Scarlett Witch or Quicksilver in an Avengers film…Hell we may never see them brought to real life and that’s sad

    • As Agent M (one of the editors of Marvel) always says: Never say never.
If Marvel gets their property back, then it’s very likely that we’ll see those two.

P.S. Technically Quicksilver DID appear on the big screen: watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine again… in the cells where all those mutants are being held captive, you see a teen (with silver hair) strapped in a room – and vibrating/trying to escape at an insane pace.

      • lol, FOX will never relinquish rights to X-Men. It’s been too much of a cash cow for them and they are most likely going to be making 2 more of those horrid XMFC movies to further pollute the movie watcher consciousness. :P

        • That explains my polluted consciousness. I better write Micheal Bay an apology letter…

        • Hey, I merely said “never say never”.
Who knows… in 30 years, FOX could have run out of crappy ideas for the X-Men and decided to move on to another franchise that they will inevitably destroy…

In 30-40 years… Marvel might just be able to get their property back ;)

  20. Please dont suck…please dont suck…please dont suck…

  21. Anyways my favorite MCU movies are:
    Incredible Hulk
    Ironman
Captain America/Thor (Can’t really put one before the other)
    Ironman 2

    • And my FAVORITE order (not that anyone cares ;)) is:
      1. Iron Man
      2. Iron Man 2 & Thor (tied)
      3. Captain America: TFA
      4. The Incredible Hulk

But the order of how GOOD they were (IMO) is:
      1. Iron Man
      2. Captain America: TFA
      3. Thor
      4. Incredible Hulk
      5. Iron Man 2

      • MCU faves
        1) Spider-Man 2
        2) Iron Man
        3) Blade
        4) Captain America
        5) Thor
        6) Hulk (not that snore fest Incredible Hulk)

        My favorites made by Marvel
        1) Iron Man
        2) Captain America
        3) Thor
        4) Iron Man 2
        5) Incredible Hulk

        • Ack! :(
Do you know what MCU stands for? It stands for Marvel Cinematic Universe and none of the Spider-Man movies, Blade movies and the 2003 Hulk movie are a part of that universe.

“MCU faves” and “favorites made by marvel” are the same thing, and Spider-Man, Blade, X-Men, Punisher and the old (stupid) Hulk movies can’t be a part of that list since they aren’t in the same continuity as the movies produced by Marvel Studios.

The movies that were MADE by Marvel and the movies that are part of the MCU are: Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: TFA.

          • They haven’t made enough films for me to consider a list of favorites although I reall have enjoyed them all..

          • I’m glad you keep pointing out the distinction. Maybe people will eventually figure it out if its hammered into their heads.

            • I can never tell whether you’re being sarcastic or not…

            • I’m not.

  22. This is gonna be epic I can’t wait to watch THE AVENGERS :)

  23. man cant frikin wait this is gonna be so epic!! fav is iron man then comes captain america =D then thor =DD

  24. HOLY WOW!!!!!!! Make Mine Marvel!

I want to see Hulk rip BatBaleman in half

    • impossible. Bat-Hulk Repellent.

      • Not impossible. Hulk strongest there is. Hulk smash puny Bale.

        • WWRRROOOOONNGGG. Batman would hypnotize The Hulk. (using a bathypno charm that he carries ALL THE TIME in his belt). Come on man, you know I’m right.

  25. AWESOME video…

Does anybody know if it’s on youtube yet?

  26. it looks like that captain america the leader is of the avengers

    • He SHOULD be ! The ‘A’ on Captain America’s forhead stands for “AVENGERS” ! It wouldn’t make sense to have someone like Iron Man be the leader. It’s just like how PROFESSOR X should be leader of the X-MEN and MISTER FANTASTIC must be leader of the FANTASTIC FOUR. See where I’m getting at ??

      • Nope, it stands for “America.” Also, there’s established history of Iron Man & Cap butting heads over the leadership role…personally I’m glad they’re including that in the Avengers film.

  27. Love the team artwork, but why is Shellhead’s arc reactor circular? Continuity-wise, Avengers happens after IM2 and the new triangular arc reactor. It’ll be interesting to see which one is in the movie.

Yeah, I’m a bit of an IM geek.

    • There´s probably both of them in the movie.

      • I agree with ScapeGoat. If you look the armor Tony uses in Avengers is different than that from both the Iron Man movies….it has silver lining on it rather than just the red and gold we saw in the previous films….most likely paying homage to Ultimate Iron Man, much like Cap’s, Thor’s, and Haweye’s Ultimate look.

      • Yeah, it wouldn’t have much of an IM presence if Tony didn’t have at one change of clothes… er, armor. :-)

    • The new arc-reactor is still circular (watch IM2 again).
The new reactor has a triangular pattern INSIDE the circular casing… that means, if he’s wearing a shirt or something, you’ll still see a circular light shining through.

The Mark 6 suit’s chest-plate was triangular, which means, that only some of the light from the reactor could shine through.

So, if Tony were to build a suit with a square chest-plate for the armor (bear with me ;))… the light will come through as a square… and if he decides to go back to a circle, the light will obviously shine through according to the shape of the armor’s chest-plate (i.e. a circle)

      • Good point. Guess I wasn’t too precise with my comment – I meant the opening in the armor, not the reactor itself.

        • Oh, well in that case, I guess the answer is pretty simple:
I mean, Stark is constantly upgrading his armor, he probably just made a new suit with the original “look” i.e. a circular hole instead of a triangular one.
I’m more interested in the new silver plating on his suit… is it just a normal metal or maybe Adamantium or possibly Vibranium?

    • If you’re an actual IM geek then you know that just because one of the armors in IM2 has a triangular reactor doesn’t mean all circular reactors are automatically “old technology.” The next new armor could very well switch back to a circular chest plate, and it would still be new.

  28. Anyone know when Cap’s bookends take place, relative to the other movies? I would guess either prior to IM ( hence “the First Avenger”) or immediately preceding the Avengers

    • Since Fury and SHIELD are public all over Times Square, I´d say it´s after Iron Man 2, TIH and Thor.

      • Yep, definitely after IM2 and Thor, but the ending of Cap could have taken place during the ending of Hulk though…

        Chronological order of the films:
        1. Captain America: TFA
        2. Iron Man
        3. Iron Man 2
        4. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer (short – starts near the end of IM2)
        5. Thor (starts near the end of IM2)
        6. The Incredible Hulk (start around the same time as Thor)
        7. Ending Of Captain America: TFA
        8. The Consultant (short)
        9. Ending Of The Incredible Hulk
        10 AVENGERS! :D

  29. I remember the story was awhile ago, but could anyone refresh me as to why Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner?

    • Norton didn’t wanna do it.

      • Marvel wanted Norton not to do it.

        • Because Norton isn’t really a team player… he’s used to being the “star of the show” and he can’t really be the “star of the show” when you have a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr, Sam Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansen, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, etc.

          • Norton’s rep called the statement “purposefully misleading” and described the decision as a financial one.

I’ve read else where that Marvel didnt offer Norton enough money and than negotiations broke down soon after.

            • I’d say both are true – Norton has a reputation of wanting everything his way…he insisted on changing the script for Incredible Hulk as an example. That reputation, and Marvel probably offering him less-than-usual money to appear in the Avengers (because they have to stay within budget, and it would have been an honor to appear even for free) meant that Norton didn’t want to take a pay cut just to be in an awesome movie, and Marvel didn’t want him because he wouldn’t take a pay cut to be a team player.
