New ‘Avengers’ Images: Explosions, Gunfire, & Costumed Heroes

4 years ago by

While we’re still waiting for Marvel to unveil an official teaser trailer for The Avengers – and not just a “button,” like the clip that showed at the conclusion of Captain America‘s end credits – the comic book/movie studio has been busy releasing lots of images, character profiles, and more to help heighten anticipation for the (hopefully) game-changing superhero ensemble adventure.

Now we have more still frames from the film, which offer an early look at several big-name characters in action – including S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury and the catsuit-clad Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

It’s expected that a full-blown teaser for The Avengers will be released in the near future, providing a better look at the super-powered protagonists of the film as well as the villains, which include the devious Loki and an army of malevolent extraterrestrial invaders.

Here is a description of the Avengers movie (for those who are just tuning in):

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Marvel’s The Avengers” brings together the mightiest super hero characters – Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) –  as they all assemble together on screen for the first time to battle a new and deadly threat. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (“Wallander”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Angels & Demons,” “Mamma Mia!”) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ feature “Thor.”

Now check out a handful of those players in the Avengers photo gallery below:

Be sure to let us know what you’re sort of action/fight sequences you’re hoping to see in The Avengers, not to mention how the film looks so far (based on these early production stills) in the comments section below.

We’ll find out for certain how it all goes down when The Avengers arrive in U.S. theaters on May 4th, 2012.

  1. i don’t mind thor with no helment but cap needs his helment on, no matter how ugly it is

    • No, no he doesn’t.

      • his helment is iconic. plus he needs the production he is only human

        • protection?

          • yeah… long day

            • I have to agree. The helmet is part of the costume and if hollywood thinks we have to see Chris Evens face without a helmet to know it is him then they are stupider then I thought. It’s examples like this that shows they still dont understand the genre they are trying to bring to the silver screen.

    • I think the reason they’re keeping it off IS because it’s so darn ugly. I can’t take it seriously.

That being said they should have done a better overall job on Cap’s design for this movie. It’s awful.

    • I’m sure that he wears the helmet when he’s in combat so noone recognizes his true identity, but between battles, or when he’s just chillin’ with his pals, etc., he probably slips it off cuz they already know who he is.

  2. Hopefully Loki wears his bad ass helmet too

  3. I don’t know why but Cap’s costume looks better worn torn and dirt.

    Scarlett’s saddle leg pose. giggady.

    • Who else but Ignur!

    • Maybe it adds believability in that it’s not just a mint showpiece, but kick-@$$ functional too?

Uh okay, sure. I’m hoping this is just a just a bad pic, not a costume flaw. The vertical measurement from waist to crotch is a bit excessive… it makes her look chunky (and Scarlett ain’t chunky) If the inseam was any shorter, she’d be waddling like Dick Van Dyke in penguin pants (See Mary Poppins).

  4. Fury and black widow look badass

  5. that Fury pick… that background… is he in Asgard? it looks like he might be.

    • looks like a desert (aka new mexico) to me

    • He is where HULK was at the end of Incredible Hulk… outside of his cabin

    • They did some filming in New Mexico, and the background looks like new Mexico to me…

      I.e. it’s not Asgard, it’s a desert.

  6. Finally, Fury gets into the action.

  7. for the past few years we have been seeing avengers teasers after each and every MCU film….

so my question is…..what will they tease at the end of the avengers???

    • With Feige recently saying there won’t be any cameos, I’m hoping they’ll run a “short” in front of this movie. While I know that we’ve heard mixed messages about potential short films, it seem to make sense— run a short featuring a character featured in Marvel’s giveaway for Free Comic Book Day.

      • S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off would be cool, but i would have to say that i am highly skeptical about introducing potential lead characters in “shorts”

I mean Thor and Cap did a great job introducing the characters, but they had feature length films and their characters are already some of the better known characters within the lexicon of the marvel universe.

trying to introduce characters like the black panther or doctor strange in a short would, i believe, leave a lot of movie goers scratching their heads as to what they just witnessed.

      • You seriously believed Feige when he said there won’t be any cameos?

I’m expecting to see Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne cameos in the movie, and for the post-credit scene, I’ll be looking forward to Thanos or something to do with the Infinity Gems…
But honestly, who knows what they’ll do for the post-credit scene? We’ve been amazed so many times by Marvel now, do you guys seriously think we will be able to predict what’s gonna happen in the post-credit?

        AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! (soon please)

        • i want Hank Pym to be in there just as much as the next guy, but i believe Feige when he says no cameos.

specifically with regards to the Hawkeye cameo in Thor, we knew about it before hand. Moreover, Hank Pym would have to be played by a potential lead actor (unless they go all hulk and change actors on us), so i think a cameo from him would be something that we would already know about.

I agree with the Thanos idea, i could see him as a villain in Thor 2, not necessarily the primary antagonist though cause he could be used for multiple films…

          • But do you remember that Feige ALSO said that there wouldn’t be any cameos in Thor?
Then, after a few months, he went on to say that only Sam Jackson would have a cameo as Nick Fury…
A few weeks after that, he in fact confirmed that Hawkeye will have a cameo…
A few weeks after THAT, we saw a short clip of the movie with Hawkeye on a balcony.

I believe Feige also denied the rumors that Fury would have a cameo in Cap… and a few months later we saw footage of Jackson and Evans shooting a scene in New York…

Trust me, you don’t have to believe these guys… it’s their job to keep these “surprises” (cameos) under wraps for as long as possible.

    • Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2… Perhaps some new movie featuring an Avenger who wasn’t in this one but will be in Avengers 2 or 3, like Ant Man for example

    • It’ll probably be something for a setup for a sequel to The Avengers, or Iron Man 3. They might get Shane Black in to direct RDJ much like Joss Whedon directed the Thor end credits scene.

  8. I liked Cap’s uniform in CATFA, but I’m not liking this one. If you look at it around the neck and shoulders it looks like a patched together halloween costume.

    • I agree. I understand moving away from the WWII look but boy, I am missing it big time in this movie.

I’m starting to agree with the people who think it should have been the plate/scale armor version.

      • Phil:
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, people HATED Cap’s WWII costume (because of a few set-photos), now they LOVE it (after they saw the actual movie)…

Give post-production some time, the new suit is going to be amazing.

        • When the original Cap costume leaked most people were to ignorant to note that was a fat stuntman on the bike. But the official photo was welcomed with open arms. My gripe about this new suit is that it does not really seem to serve an purpose other than a colorful costume. Hopefully they will say its triple weaved yada yada strong enough to stop a bullet that killed u in the comics. Personally I would prefer something more armored, the red parachute straps back and sone grenades on his belt. And a scene as why he does not carry a gun anymore.

          • I thought it was a given that Cap’s new suit would be made out of some “high-tech material with yada, yada, yada fibers that gives him twice the protection of his old suit”.
I guess I’m the only one who thinks Cap’s new suit is going to be made out of some sort of Stark tech 😛
It is a comic book movie after all… if they’re doing the helicarrier, I’m sure they can explain why Cap has a new suit and what makes it better than the old one.

I also like the fact that Cap doesn’t carry a gun in this movie (not that it actually bothered me the first time, since Cap has used a gun in MANY, MANY comics…)

            • The scale armor would of been the best route to go. There is actually REAL scale armor used by the army, its called ‘Dragon Armor’ and is actually better then regular Kevlar. FACT! So the studio, with its ‘High Tech’ armor idea is a BIG FAIL..When in the comics does Cap fight with his helmet off??

      • While I agree that the plate/scale armor is definitely the better way to go, I don’t think this Kevlar look is necessarily bad either. I guess it depends on how it will be used and how it looks in post-prod. And we’re not done quite yet. We’ll see.

    • Umm, that’s his cap/hood… pulled down behind his head. It looks fine to me. And the patching looks like most kevlar gear. I’m sure that when he is in action, the seams aren’t very noticeable anyway.

  9. Well…the Marvel Mouse is in the Marketing move..
That’s expected…part of the Disney Family now..
1 of the many American ‘Evil Corporations that people are protesting here, down on Wall Street in New York…but not for nothing, they get the job done.

Anyway…I know you gotta promote the Actors but Cap/Thor standing there in a battle with no ‘Head
gear ..come on.. too Hollywood to be, belived. a little enforcing the rules are needed sometimes…

    • Agree. I have always been a fan of helmets mask & headbands.

    • What? What a bizarre comment. Sounds like you’d fit right in with the kids down there on wall street sleeping in filth…. They don’t have a clue what they’re talking about either.

      • Pot? Meet Kettle. Kettle? This is Pot.

  10. I wanna see Hulk beat the crap outa Thor

  11. How come no pictures of maria hill?

  12. Okay, where’s Antman/Giantman and Wasp? They took out actual “super-powered”. Hell I would have taken Wonder Man, Black Panther or Spiderwoman, even, even if they are West Coast.

This movie looks like it’s going to suck, big time. The individual movies were pretty bad ass, but this is looking to be a diaster. Black Widow isn’t even freakin’ RUSSIAN. Oi gevalt! All I can say, is I hope the final product is worth the wait.

  13. Wanna see Skrulls duke it out with the Avengers in a big old slobberknocker…and lots of Iron Man action in particular!

  14. S.J. is stolen biological material, taken against will and formed to clones line 200 pieces total. Sign of dangerous criminal activity. Original Scarlett Galabekian educated and licensed pediatrician doctor

    • Huh? Wanna explain that?

  15. Black Widow 😀

  16. if you read the article in entertainment. they are making big plans for the Inhumans. so my question is. when will the Kree be brought in to the MMU?

    • the skrulls are the army that they’ll be fighting in this movie, so they’ll probably make reference to the kree

      • How do you know it’s the Skrulls?
Nothing has been confirmed yet dude!

I’m really getting annoyed at people who are just ASSUMING what’s going to happen…

        • And when are we going to see Ultron?

  17. Black Widow making a potty

  18. cap looks pretty tank to me next to stark, i don’t know what all the complaints about his uniform are going on a about, this movie is going to awesome

  19. Would really like to see a Hulk vs Thor confrontation as the movie’s opening scene, or more to the point, Thor trying to capture or contain the Hulk (with ensuing cross ass kicking going on)

    • Gonna be hard to do that. First they have to get Thor back to Earth.

      • Yup.
@Mongoose: Unfortunately, that scene won’t happen. (At least, not at the start of the movie).

I’m predicting that the opening scene will have a lot to do with Thor returning to earth though.

At the end of Thor we saw Foster, Selvig and Darcy getting ready for something (“SHIELD codes” were mentioned) — I’m guessing that scene might play out in the start of the Avengers and will involve SHIELD trying to open a portal between earth and Asgard.

        Just a guess…

  20. Great, but what happen with Cap’s suit? I love the costume on his own movie… And by the way, anyone here can tell me who is the Bad Guy in this movie???

    • Loki, and he’ll have an “army”.

A lot of people (including screenrant it seems) are ASSUMING the army is the Skrulls, but why they assume this is unknown to me.

I’m not saying it WON’T be the Skrulls, I just think people should wait for some actual PROOF before saying it is the Skrulls.

      • @TheAvenger Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) just responded to a tweet:

RT @ivyadrena: @clarkgregg How did you hurt your hand? :( –Fighting off the skrull armada! (OK, broke it playing basketball)

although its not “official confirmation,” is this proof enough?

interesting that he seemed to let it slip right here before any official news came out.

also the images from the scrapped video game should be proof that the skrulls will invade next summer.

i for one, hope that coulson ends up being a skrull. that would be crazy.

        • Dude, he was making a joke 😉
Gregg is a comic book fan and has been making jokes like that for the past few months!
He knows he isn’t allowed to let anything “slip” (he’ll get sued by Marvel for breach of contract).

And as for the canned video game: it has no validity (for example: the Cap game had A LOT of villains that weren’t in the movie).

There is no proof, and until there is a SHRED of reason to believe it’s the Skrulls, then I’ll hop on the metaphoric bandwagon with the rest of you.

      • Umm, why are we even talking about the Skrulls? It’s the wrong franchise. As far as I know, they go with the Fantastic Four… don’t they?

  21. Cap’s mask has ear holes in the third picture. Hmmm…. Haven’t seen that one yet. Wonder how many versions of his mask there are.

  22. my comment is awaiting moderation…does that mean this website can’t handle the real-ness of my comment? I want to see Captain America. Not the Human Torch complaining about facetime

    • Wow, I didn’t know there was still anyone on this planet who’s upset about the casting of Evans.
In case you didn’t know, the FF movies aren’t part of the same continuity as IM1&2, TIH, Thor and Cap.

    • Would you rather see Deadpool playing Green Lantern? How about Whiplash playing Marv from Sin City? Dude/Dudette? these are actors; let them act.

      • don’t forget that before he was green lantern, and before he could be deadpool, he was hannibal king from blade, another comic character.

and before all this he was van wilder haha

  23. I was critical of Batman Begins costume when I first saw the pic, but it translated well on the big screen, so I am going to do the same with Cap’s crap helmet….they still could have put some metallic wings instead of drawn ones on it though.

  24. Just so you all know. I love Evans as Captain America. He bulked up so much for the role and signed on for 6 films right off the bat! BUT..Now he’s starting to complain about the mask. That is what I find is straight BS!!

    • Actually, he lost a lot of weight/bulk/muscle between doing Cap and the Avengers.
      Very disappointed with that :(

As for the mask: I would complain to, if I had to wear it (oh wait, no I wouldn’t! I would be wearing a Captain America costume while being in the presence of THE AVENGERS! I wouldn’t dare to complain if I was given an importunity like that!)

  25. When in the comics have you seen Captain America fight without his mask? It seems we have a bunch of homosexuals here. Talking about how ‘good’ or ‘better’ he looks without the mask.I think you all are push-overs for not saying anything about movie companies and actors ruining Comic book heroes.

  26. The best example I have of a Comic Book hero being ruined by a stupid actors face-time…DEADPOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!

  27. I dont see why people are giving caps costume such bad rep? his costume loooks sick and good for present time i see nothing wrong with it people stop hating on it!

  28. Anyone else notice the earholes in Cap’s helmet?

  29. The might ban-hammer has been unleashed. I’m sure it’s clear upon whom.
