Joe Russo is one half of the Russo brothers directorial team known for their work on the Marvel cinematic franchise. The Russo brothers are also known for their work on the TV shows Arrested Development and Community. He worked directly with his brother on Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and on the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel.

Screen Rant got a chance to talk to Joe Russo at San Diego Comic Con 2017, where we discussed which characters were going to be the focus for Avengers: Infinity War and how important the Reality Gem is going to be in the first Infinity War film.

We’ve heard rumors that there are 60+ MCU characters in the film. Who does the story really center around in Infinity War?

Joe Russo: You know, the story really centers who you would expect it to center around, so our more important characters. This is a culmination film ten years in the making and we are pulling the main story threads from all of the different franchises into one unifying narrative. So any of the important characters are going to be in this film and they are going to have something important to do in the movie.

Something that we haven’t seen yet is the Reality Gem and it’s something that we’ve had a lot of speculation about. And the Reality Gem is obviously a game changer. How important will that be in Infinity War in the first movie? How will that be handled?

Joe Russo: The Reality Gem?

Yeah.

Joe Russo: Each gem has its own special power. We had to put a lot of thought into how we would represent those powers so it was clear to the audience. Not only are you dealing with a lot of characters, you are also dealing with the stones, the gems, and there’s a lot of them. So for people to keep track of all of it, we had to get really specific. I won’t divulge how we use the Reality Stone, but we do use it.
