Barely in theaters, Avengers: Endgame already ranks #5 on the IMDb Top 250 list. Voted on by registered IMDb users, the ever-evolving list has gone through numerous changes over the years and provides a nice mix of classic and contemporary films. In order to qualify, a movie needs to have at least 25,000 ratings on the website and the formula smartly places a higher value on those from more established users.

Despite its widespread popularity and incredibly successful rate with critics, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only claimed a couple of spots on the list. At least in the minds of IMDb voters, Avengers: Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy are the best the franchise has to offer as of this writing. But now, in the blink of an eye, Marvel's latest has soared up the charts.

Currently (today is April 26, 2019), Avengers: Endgame is #5 on the IMDb Top 250 list with an 8.9 rating. The only films ahead of it are The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and The Dark Knight. Check out a screenshot of the page in the space below:

What's truly incredible about this is that Endgame only just opened in theaters; preview screenings in the U.S. took place on Thursday, April 25. But the film was selling advanced tickets at unprecedented rates, so it isn't entirely surprising Endgame was able to secure as many votes as it did after playing for only a few hours. The culmination of a 22-film, 11-year storytelling arc, this was one of the most-anticipated movie events in quite some time, and fans obviously wasted no time in giving Endgame their stamp of approval. Many believe the film lives up to its gargantuan levels of hype and served as an emotional payoff for all of the MCU to date. Once again, directors Joe and Antony Russo delivered something special.

Still, even the most die-hard MCU fans might admit Endgame being #5 (ahead of a plethora of stone-cold classics) is a bit hyperbolic. But that's the nature of the IMDb system. It's not uncommon for the latest installments of mega franchises to place on the Top 250 in the immediate aftermath of their release, only to fall off as time goes on. Those seeing Endgame opening night were the ones most excited to see it, and therefore the most likely to give it a high rating. Right now, it would be a shock if Endgame slid off the list entirely as more people see it and rate it on the site, but when the dust finally settles, it'll probably be snug in a lower ranking.
