Fans can now watch Black Widow's (Scarlett Johansson) original death scene from Avengers: Endgame and see how different it is compared to the final version. Going into Endgame, Marvel fans knew some beloved characters were going to die. Still, they were shocked when Natasha met her end well before the film's epic final battle. In order to gather all of the Infinity Stones ahead of Thanos, Natasha and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) travel to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. When they learn of the Stone's hefty price (to gain the Stone, you must lose what you love the most), the two battle it out to see who will sacrifice themselves. Natasha gains the upper hand and falls to her death, much to the dismay of fans.

Natasha's death has sparked a lot of debate over whether it was an unfair ending for the character. Some have even claimed Clint should have been the one to die, which actually was the plan at one point. However, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely opted to change the unlucky victim to Natasha as they felt it was a fitting resolution to her arc. Thankfully, fans haven't seen the last of her. Black Widow, her long-awaited solo movie, will arrive in theaters in November after being pushed back from May.

Natasha's alternate death sequence, previously shared on Disney+, has made its way to Twitter via MCU Perfect Clips & GIFs. This version is far more violent, as instead of a brawl between Clint and Natasha, the two must fight Thanos' (Josh Brolin) forces. Natasha is shot multiple times before she falls over the edge of the cliff, and while it's still only PG-13 gore, it can be unsettling to watch. Check it out below:

There's little doubt that, as controversial as Endgame's scene was, it's far better than the deleted one. Not only does the deleted scene feature gratuitous violence (because let's be real, all those shots were hugely unnecessary), it completely erases the emotional stakes. The moment is supposed to be a reflection of how much Natasha and Clint mean to each other, which is ultimately why Natasha's sacrifice works. In the deleted scene, the two hardly interact because they're too busy fighting Thanos' soldiers. Instead of a heartbreaking moment between two best friends, it becomes just another fight scene.

Additionally, the scene leaves little question about which of the two will be dying. Natasha is always ahead of Clint on the ledge, so there's no doubt she'll be the one to go over. It eliminates the tension. And, lastly, the deleted scene just looks more melodramatic than the final version. Fans may have their gripes about Natasha's death, but if they had to pick one, it would likely be the one that made it into Endgame.
