The Cast of ‘The Avengers’ Describe Their Characters, Reveal Plot Details

Published 4 years ago by , Updated September 18th, 2012 at 8:25 am,

Earlier today, we saw photographic portraits – or were they headshots? – of each of The Avengers, as well as official set photos of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow interacting.

Now, character descriptions have been released of each of The Avengers from their respective actors – Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner.

On his first meeting with Joss Whedon and the role Iron Man plays in the film, Robert Downey Jr. said:

“Well, I [told Whedon], ‘I need to be in the opening sequence. I don’t know what you’re thinking, but Tony needs to drive this thing.’ He was like, ‘Okay, let’s try that.’ We tried it and it didn’t work, because this is a different sort of thing, the story and the idea and the theme is the theme, and everybody is just an arm of the octopus. But what was I like? As usual, just ****ing aggressive and hurtful. Whatever. The usual.”

On the darker, more cynical version of Captain America in The Avengers, Chris Evans said:

“It’s just about him trying to come to terms with the modern world. You’ve got to imagine, it’s enough of a shock to accept the fact that you’re in a completely different time, but everybody you know is dead. Everybody you cared about. He was a soldier, obviously, everybody he went to battle with, all of his brothers in arms, they’re all dead. He’s just lonely. I think in the beginning it’s a fish out of water scene, and it’s tough. It’s a tough pill for him to swallow. Then comes trying to find a balance with the modern world.”

On Thor’s continued conflicted battle with his adoptive brother, Loki, Chris Hemsworth said:

“I think [Thor's] motivation is much more of a personal one, in the sense that it’s his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, it’s some bad guy who they’ve gotta take down. It’s a different approach for me, or for Thor. He’s constantly having to battle the greater good and what he should do versus … it’s his little brother there. I’ve been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but I’m the only one who is allowed to be angry at them. There’s a bit of that.”

Should make for some nice conflict between Avengers.

On Bruce Banner’s relationship with Tony Stark, Mark Ruffalo said:

“He’s the most – guy, but a total loose cannon. No one wants to set him off except for Iron Man, except for Downey, who just wants to see him pop. It’s funny, there’s a really cool dynamic between Tony Stark and Banner. Banner actually enjoys it, and finds it really refreshing. They’re a lot alike in a strange way. They’re both these kind of scientists who are mavericks, kind of renegades. Banner, for all his mild-mannered mythology, he’s still the dude who was testing some pretty crazy s–t on himself, so he has that rebel streak in him.”

It’s unclear what “He’s the most – guy” means, but everything else sounds fantastic - Especially the interplay between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Not only does Downey’s Stark want to be a jerk to Ruffalo’s Banner to set him off, but Banner kind of likes it, too. Could Stark be jealous of Banner? Is he unhappy because maybe he’s no longer the smartest guy in the room?

On Black Widow’s lack of super powers, Scarlett Johansson said:

“The other day we were doing this big reveal shot of all the Avengers. Thor has got his hammer, Cap’s got his shield, Hawkeye has his bow and arrow, and Hulk is huge. Then it pans over to me and I’ve got guns. Iron Man’s like, hovering above all of us, ready to go.  I was like, ‘Joss… um… do I look okay holding these guns?’ And he said ‘She’s a total badass. She’s a killing machine.’”

One of the most underwhelming things about Iron Man 2 was Johansson’s Black Widow, so hopefully Joss Whedon has taken some time to develop the character and make her more interesting.

On Hawkeye’s lack of super powers, Jeremy Renner said:

“The only sort of thing I cling to is the relationship of past experiences with Scarlett’s character, with them both being human. I can cling to that. [But he’s not insecure about not having super powers.] Quite the opposite. He’s the only one who can really take down The Hulk with his tranq tip arrows. He knows his limitations, but when it comes down to it, there has to be a sense of confidence in any superhero.”

Renner’s comment on Hawkeye’s tranq-tipped arrows meant to take down the Hulk bring to mind the first arc of The Ultimates comic book. Might we be seeing at least one major fight between the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers? Let’s hope so.

What do you think about the descriptions, Screen Ranters? Are you more excited about The Avengers now or is it high time that we see an official trailer?

  1. Where is Coulson’s description? I hope he is the one to save the day.

    • It wouldn´t surprise me if Coulson bites the dust. As we all know, Whedon is known for killing off beloved characters. Or, if the Skrulls are really the villains, he could be one of them…

      • I herd about Wheadon’s sociopathic tendencies. I rather him kill Fury or Chris Evans & let Maria Hill or Bucky take over for them. Coulson is coolest character next to RDJ. He holds the MCU together. He’s the glue. Without him the universe will crumble and implode.

        • Guys, remember, even though Whedon is writing and directing the movie, doesn’t mean that he gets to decide if any of the characters gets killed.

It won’t be Coulson (he is busy negotiating for IM3) and it most definitely won’t be any of the Avengers (main cast/money makers).

If I had to pick a person who’s going to die it would be professor Selvig (although IMO, I doubt anyone is going to be killed off.)

          • My money is on the Hulk

            • LOL sure ;)
The strongest guy in the marvel universe gets killed by a few aliens…

              • You could kill Bruce Banner…

                • No, I remember watching Hulk Vs. Wolverine, and even when Wolverine stabbed Banner in the chest with his claws, Banner still Hulked out and healed instantly.

Like Mongoose said, if the death in instantaneous, Banner COULD possibly get killed, but as long as he has a few seconds to begin the transformation, there’s no way he can be killed…

              • Well, the only person who’s contract is supposedly expiring soon is RDJ’s… but it’s a pretty safe bet that he won’t get killed off ;)

I still maintain that no one will get killed in this movie (except some civilians, aliens and unimportant SHIELD agents – like agent Sitwell or whatever his name was…)

  2. Gotta tell ya. Im a Thor fan from way back. And I still am. We just have to see a little Hulk/Thor tussel.

  3. Mark Ruffalo looks like a Vampire and thats not Chris Hew…(Thor)

    • Huh?

      • Huh indeed.

      • What he means is “Chris Hemsworth’s face looks a bit off from the lighting, but I’m too lazy to go figure out his whole name, and I don’t know much about photography so I think it’s not the real actor because the lighting is odd.”

        • LOL…hey u got jokes to me thats how is pictured, Chris HEMS-WORTH looks kind of weird compared to other pictures. Its just my opinion

  4. That be pretty sweet if there was a hulk and rest of avengers battle

  5. This is the first I’ve seen of Ruffalo as Banner, and the pic makes me think he’s going to add just the right amount of *crazy* to Hulk that Norton and Bana lacked. But he definitely doesn’t look the part of the Everyman, which is how I’ve always seen Banner. He’s supposed to be a nobody, a regular guy. This pic makes him look like a Ralph Lauren model or something. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    • Don’t base too much on these photos…these promotional shoots for Entetainment and other magazines often skew towards the “let’s be overly dramatic or silly!” and aren’t indicative of the film itself.

    • To me it seemed that Banner was doing the “Blue Steel” pose. (from Zoolander)

      • Sorry I didn’t notice some mentioned it already

  6. Uh yeah I disagree with the thought of stark being jealous. I think he gets banner…everyone might be treating him with respect so he doesn’t go hulk on them. But tony wants him too. He knows banner doesn’t want to be treated like a little kid.

  7. I think he gets banner…everyone might be treating him with respect so he doesn’t go hulk on them. But tony wants him too. He knows banner doesn’t want to be treated like a little kid.

    • Also, I think that Tony is the smartest guy in the room. It’d be weird for him to be jealous of someone else’s intelligence.

      • @Levi, Tony isn’nt necessarily the smartest guy in terms of just “who’s smarter” Tony vs. Bruce. It’s comparing apples to oranges. Tony is a “Techno-Scientist”, while Bruce is a Bio-Chemist/Scientist”. They both have different types of expertise. That’s why Tony is so intrigued by the Hulk and just goes nuts about seeing something so weird happen to a normal human. Tony gets his kicks from watching Banner transform, Hulk out and go on a rampage. Now “IF” Hank Pym were in this film and it were a battle of scientific wits, then HANK PYM WOULD be the smartest man in the room. HANK PYM IS A BIO-CHEMIST/TECHNO-NANO SCIENTIST. Theoretically Hank Pym is smarter than both Tony Stark AND Bruce Banner.

  8. My guess is that the opening sequence will be of them (Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury) trying to capture and detain Hulk. Then they will take Hulk to a secure prison where we meet Tony Stark. Then it’ll be Captain America and Thor in that order I bet.

  9. I’m looking forward to the Tony/Bruce interaction that was brought up it seams like a nice little sub-plot.
The only ting we need now ( and i think i can speak for everyone here) is a pic of the Hulk

    till next time

  10. they are so going to catch the Hulk to start the movie…

    • Which iron man will not be a part of because he failed his evaluation in IM2 and they find out he can actually be of help to control the hulk and he joins up.

  11. Bruce Banner looks like he’s giving his best “Blue Steel.”

    • I am at a loss for words at how fantastic this comment is… Bravo, bravo my friend

  12. can’t wait hope
its not a let down like
    one or two movies were
    already in 2011,like the
    green latern, but i can’t
    criticize any of them i’ll
critic thor when i see it on
dvd hvnt seen one movie yet in 2011
    hvnt had time ……………….
i think once avengers is out and
    they ,ake justice league,there should
be an avengers vs justice league be one
helluva movie would love to see superman
vs iron man that would be epic !!!!!!!!!!

  13. I just don’t get a Banner/brilliant scientist feel from Ruffalo’s picture. I think he’s a good actor, but the vibe isn’t right to me…at least, so far.

    • To me he looks like a tortured genius/schizophrenic.

    • I didn´t get this Banner/brilliant scientist feel from Bixby either, but he was great in that role.

      • And Norton reflected the Bixby persona perfectly which is why he was so great in the role. Still ticked off they couldn’t work out their differences because Norton would have worked wonderfully with this cast. /sigh

Ruffalo on the other hand is a complete unknown factor that could or could not work. I would have preferred going with the sure thing myself.

  14. What the hell? Nice duck face Ruffalo. You’d think someone would notice that before they release the pics….

  15. Yea, wat was ruffalo/marvel thinking with that pic?
He looks like he desperately wants to make the cover for next sundays JC Penny’s winter menswear collection

  16. S.J. is stolen biological material, taken against will and formed to clones line 200 pieces total. Sign of dangerous criminal activity. Original Scarlett Galabekian educated and licensed pediatrician doctor.

    • I wouldn’t mind being “attacked” by *THOSE* clones!!

  17. I like the Banner pic, he appears to be picking up where Norton left off as he willingly turns into the Hulk at the end of TIH. Maybe he has embraced this side he is unable to get rid of…plus it shows some unstable quality foreshowing in the movie. I am ready to see this trailer now!

  18. With the comments from rdj, it seems like they are keeping with the iron man 2 end scene and that maybe he will have to kind of prove that he can be more than a “consultant” for the team. And maybe the interaction between banner and stark will have to do in part with stark helping to calm banner down and maybe in the process, by stopping the hulk, becoming a full member of the avengers.

  19. I think the opening could be the avengers sans hulk taking on the hulk who is rampaging.

  20. After watching The Town for the first time the other day, I feel really good about Renner playing Hawkeye.

  21. i hope Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is like womanizing Clint Barton in the Avenger’s Assemble web series, would be down to see him and Tony hit the bars and pick up some ladies haha

  22. “a total loose cannon. No one wants to set him off except for Iron Man, except for Downey, who just wants to see him pop.” — Yup… yes that sounds just like Stark… ;)

    *******************SPOILER ALERT******************
The Hulk battle will take place closer to end of the movie (if that leaked page of Sam’s script has any validity). After the Helicarrier gets damaged (probably because of Loki trying to escape), Banner flips out (or should I say Hulk’s out). The Black Widow tries to calm him down, but the closer he gets, the more scared she becomes. (I’m thinking Hawkeye then swoops in for the rescue and subdues the Hulk).

Of course, this whole theory is quite possibly WRONG, but who knows? (I just deduced this from the leaked script and the info given on this article). Or maybe… there might even be two Hulk battles (one near the beginning of the movie, and one closer to the end) although I couldn’t possibly believe that a movie shorter than 3hrs could fit that much stuff into it.

But, I think we can rest assured that there will, without a doubt, be at least one scene where the Hulk goes crazy and fights the Avengers…

    Avengers Assemble! :D

    • Hmmm what about..

      - Get Hulk to join team (somehow)
      - Everyone fears him (even though, I can’t see Thor being timid or scared around anything. He did go to the Frost Giants home and just about killed everyone himself)
      - movie goes along, the aren’t letting Banner join the fight because he is too unstable
      - loki escapes, damages stuff,
      - Hulk hulks for some reason (Loki playing mind games?) avengers have to fight hulk and hawk eye puts him down)
      - Avengers go after loki and skrull but are losing
      - Hulk comes in to save the day after he wakes up and hears what is happening.

thoughts? I can’t see them fitting 2 hulk battles, catching loki the first time, the skrulls, then fighting loki and the skrulls in 2 hours of movie

      • Use a montage like the one they had in Captain America.

  23. These pictures… are ridiculous. Except for Cap, everyone is completely out of character with ridiculous posing.
Still, this movie’s gonna be badass.

    • Well, I think Renner looks pretty bad-ass, and RDJ doesn’t look “out of character” IMO.

But yeah, Hemsworth, Johanson and Rufalo all look pretty full of themselves.

  24. I think the script should include a part where Captain America discovers that the heroes and his brothers of the World Wars have been forgotten and he gets upset and goes to a bar where he tries to get drunk but can’t during to his superpowers where a guy beats up a woman and America inferences and he gets into a fight with the guy and his friends.

The bar fight gets harder and rough when Cap is outnumbered and The Avengers arrives to help him where Stark, Hawkeye and Thor help him and defeated the guys at the bar.

The best way to end The Avengers is having the team saving the world, Thor and maybe Loki if he does survive returning to Asgard, Hawkeye and Black Window falling in love, Bruce Banner going to a new place to have a new life and Cap going to find his true love, Peggy.

Basically a Thor movie, a Iron Man 3 movie, a Hulk movie, a Captain America 2 movie and maybe a S.H.I.E.L.D movie will be set up in the future, no knows.

    • No offence, but let me just get this right:

You’re saying that Cap (a super-soldier that can take on an entire Hydra army and heal form multiple bullet wounds in less than two days) would need the help of the Avengers (an assassin that can use any item as a deadly weapon, a guy in a high-tech suit of armor that has the ability to level a city, a god with a magic hammer that has the ability to level EARTH) to take on a few drunk guys in a bar? ;)
Yeah, I can totally see that scene in the movie (sarcasm) ;)

      • Too bad they cut out the bar fight scene from Thor.

        • Was there a bar fight scene? Or are you just kidding… I haven’t been able to buy the blu-ray yet.

          • Thor said they drank and fought together (he and Selvig), but they never show a fight.

  25. Mark Ruffalo has got the Blue Steel look going on.

  26. I am just scared this movie will try and do too much in too little of a time frame. I don’t want it to feel rushed and I doubt they allow the movie to enter the 3 hour zone.

Just judging from the other movies and trailers and buttons, they have to do the following…

    - Get Thor back from Asgard. Probably by using the cosmic cube but they have to somehow explain how the damn thing even works and how it can get Thor back. Unless Asgard rebuilt the Bifrost that quickly.

    - Get the Hulk. Somehow, someway they have to find an ask the Hulk to be on the team. He is the ONLY Avenger to have no idea what the Avengers are at this point. This could be a huge battle where he Hulks out or they just find and ask him.

    - Explain Hawkeye a bit. He was in Thor for all of 5 mins. All we know (from the movies) is that he works for SHIELD and has a bow.

    - Have Ironman prove his worth and go from consultant to team member. Or he could just join the fight without asking.

    - Capture Loki. In one trailer he is described as being in jail. So he needs to get caught (on purpose?) and get out.

    - Have Loki get the cube. Wouldn’t be much of a movie if the bad guy never gets the damn thing.

    - Explain the Kree/Skrulls.

That is a lot of stuff they have to do 100%. And then you have to add all the other stuff they will do and this could be a very epic movie or a very long movie (or both), or a very rushed movie. In Whedon we trust I suppose…

  27. Yeah that Thor pictures looks…. Not quite right. I mean he looks to…..

    uh…. um……

    Adonis like.

  28. The Avenger, I think that scene might work because it will show how Steve Rogers aka. Captain America is coping with the modern world.

Just like in real life, wars happen and go and the next gerenation don’t really sometimes care about the wars that have happened and don’t care about the sacrifices done by the World Wars soldiers.

So basically if in the movie, it doesn’t show Rogers’s emotion side and how he is coping with the 21st century and he’s like ‘Okay, I have been frozen for 60 years and that’s fine” then well the film will fall apart because this isn’t only a superhero but also a soldier of the past.

The film must show how a soldier copes after a war and how he feels being alone with no one he knows and no one he really cares about.

Also I hope the film shows Cap’s true motives to why he wants to save the world because it ain’t going to be like let’s save the world just like that, maybe Cap wants to save the world because he loves someone like Peggy or wants to save the world so he can make sure that the sacrifices done by his war brothers are in vain.

I really don’t what people say about my opinion but still it is my opinion.

    • I have no problem with your theories on Cap’s emotional issues in the movie, but I do have a problem with you saying that Captain America would need help to fight off a few drunk guys…
(I.e. My comment was not at all aimed at your comment about Cap’s emotional issues or how he deals with them, my comment was a response to your suggestion that Cap would need the help of the Avengers to fight off 8 drunk guys in a bar…)

As to your suggestions concerning how Cap deals with the modern world and how he would try to deal with everything that happened to him: I completely agree.

But I’m guessing you didn’t read my entire comment, only the last sentence?

      • No big deal losing all your love ones and the entire life you have known. Cap will get over it as quick as he did Bucky’s death. One bottle of schnaps. Two at the most. And maybe a dance with Sharon Carter.

        • Aw come on dude…

They didn’t have enough time to show how Cap deals with the death of all the people he knew and loved. (That’s what the Avengers and Cap2 are for).
Although I will agree that Evans could have played the “post-Bucky-death” with a little more emotion…

It was war time, he had to keep his eye on the prize (when you’re fighting a group of evil Nazi’s trying to take over the world, there isn’t really time to brood over those you lost in the battle) — I’ve read quite a few biographies where it’s exactly the same: it’s only until after the war-veteran returns home, when the fact sinks in that all his friends got blown to smithereens while fighting for their country.
When my father was in the South-African army, he experienced the exact same thing: while you’re in battle, you HAVE to set personal emotions aside (the time for grieving comes later)…
