With Avengers: Endgame looking likely to hit theaters with a 3-hour runtime, Marvel is reportedly considering adding an intermission to the film. While they're extremely rare to see nowadays, intermissions during theatrical screenings of movies used to be a fairly common thing. These rest periods allowed audience members to head to the bathroom, or hit the concession stand to buy food and drink, lining the pockets of theaters. That was until the norm became trying to schedule as many screenings as possible per day, in order to sell more tickets.

Sometimes, when a classic film of epic length - Gone with the Wind and 2001: A Space Odyssey are two prominent examples - enjoys a theatrical re-release, the original intermission period is retained, allowing moviegoers to come closer to duplicating the theatrical experience one would've been part of many decades prior. The idea of an intermission being inserted into a blockbuster studio release seems almost crazy though, yet, a new rumor suggests it might happen with Avengers: Endgame.

According to a tweet by Alan Cerny - of Coming Soon and the podcast Matinee Heroes - Marvel Studios is considering adding an intermission break to Avengers 4, due to how likely the film appears to end up meeting or exceeding a 3-hour theatrical runtime. Responses to Cerny's post have been both positive and negative concerning the idea, with some fans being open to the possibility of a mid-film break, and others finding the prospect completely unappealing. Check out his post below.

Before going any further, it's important to stress that Cerny is not a known Disney insider, and it's not clear what his source for this information concerning Avengers 4 is. Until if and when Marvel or Disney comments on the matter, fans should take this idea with a huge grain of salt. That said, it's certainly an intriguing prospect, and there are likely many people who would appreciate an opportunity to stretch their legs or empty their bladders without missing any of the Avengers' ultimate battle with intergalactic villain Thanos.

Ultimately though, it's hard to see Marvel or Disney actually doing this, for one huge reason more than any other: spoilers. Avengers: Endgame will surely be the hottest ticket in town upon release, and the last thing anyone needs is for a "Snape Kills Dumbledore" situation to break out, with attendees of one screening discussing the film within earshot of those waiting for the next one to start. Such an event could well lead to a free-for-all in the theater lobby that would put a smile on Thanos' face. At the end of the day, adding an intermission just isn't necessary. Fans would sit through Avengers: Endgame if it had a 5-hour runtime, and would be happy to do so.
