Sebastian Stan has confirmed he’ll be back for Untitled Avengers and will start filming his part in October. Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may still feel young, but in reality it is already approaching the midway point. The turn towards the end will start with Avengers: Infinity War next May, but those events and everything that has happened before are all leading to Avengers 4 the following year. This franchise has always been an ensemble film, but the casts of the first two (and possibly three) will look small compared to who all could be present for the fourth installment.
Filming on the project began near the end of the summer and information on the follow-up has not been hard to come by. Set photos have confirmed a number of stars already, with Chris Evans and Brie Larson being the latest to report for duty on Avengers 4. However, we now know for sure that the Winter Soldier will join them as well, and will do so in just a few weeks.
CinemaBlend spoke to Stan about his upcoming role in both of the new Avengers films, and it was here he revealed when he goes back to Atlanta. Stan was part of filming for Infinity War at different points throughout the first half of this year, and he’s set to re-join the crew in October for the conclusion:
I still haven’t read a script for this next one. For this fourth one. All I know is I’m going down there in October, and that’s all I know. I still actually haven’t read a script for the last one. [laughs] All I knew was what I was involved in, and I was kept on a very ‘need to know’ basis. Maybe that’s the norm. But it’s a family system. There’s a trust, and there’s a sense of knowledge between the writers and the directors, with Kevin [Feige]… that shows up.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are set to film Untitled Avengers for the remainder of the year, reportedly prior to doing Infinity War reshoots at the start of 2018. This should give Stan plenty of time to film his part on the sequel. What his role will be is unknown to fans, as well as Stan to some degree as he has not read the complete script for either film. He should be regaining a vibranium arm at some point in either movie, and the D23/SDCC footage from Infinity War teased that he will be fighting alongside Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in Wakanda. What else happens beyond that is up for debate and speculation at this point.
Stan’s return for Avengers 4 and Evans’ non-committal statements about his MCU future will surely cause many to wonder if this will indeed be the time Stan is promoted from Winter Soldier to the new Captain America. He did sign a lengthy nine-picture deal initially with Marvel and has only used up about half of those appearances so far. Plus, he’s previously said he wouldd be game to pick up the shield and the mantle in the future. This could be his chance, but even if it isn’t, seeing what role he plays will be something to keep an eye on.
